December 7, 17, and 22, 2010
- Snow Days has made it's way back to Free Realms for 2010! There are no new quests, but all of the ones from last year did return. Most of last year's items returned, plus there are some new ones.
- The November 2010 Member's Pack was distributed late, because of some issues (according to Pex, on the official forums).
- Ari Dresswell has updated her costume for the holidays: she's dressed in a Miss Santa Outfit now. It looks like she will dress for whatever the current holiday is, then return to the Chatty Suit in between.
- There is a new Housing Directory! You can submit your house or lot to be listed on the directory, and that means anyone can visit (whether you are a member or not, whether they are your friend or guild-mate or not). Visitors can also vote on your house -- 1 to 5 stars! This is great for all of those very active builders out there, because it means they can clear out all of those extra names from their friends list. And since the non-member visitor limit was removed, it means all of those excellent non-member builders will get to show off their stuff as well!
- Because of the Housing Directory, there is now the option to name your property using a 3-wheel name wheel.
- There's a special Snow Days Membership Gift being distributed. Some members have reported trouble, either receiving the wrong pack or none at all. If you do not have the correct pack by the end of the month, please submit a ticket.
- Three new pieces of furniture are in the Coin Shop:
- Will there be a new ride in this week's update? Signs point to YES! An Eight Ball ride has been added to the Marketplace.
- Two types of pets have been removed from the Marketplace: Triceratops and Hippos. We're not exactly sure when they were removed, or if they will return at any time, since there was no official word about them being taken out. (Thanks to Yellowbubba for noticing!)
- There's a new lot in the Marketplace: the Shrouded Stairs Lot. It's based on the hill in Shrouded Glade that leads up to the Druid Academy.
- Only 2 new items in the Coin Shop: Sylvan Stove and Ringed Side Table.
- There have been more changes to the Game UI:
- The Welcome Screen is less cluttered
- Minigames, Pets, Rides, and Housing all have their own menus now.
- You can now WALK in Free Realms! Just hold down the Shift key as you move. This will affect the speed of your rides as well. The Pixies' animation is a slower flight speed.
- The Potion slot on all of the Prize Wheels has been changed. You now can land on a Battle Item Mystery Pack, which will give you a random potion or sphere.
- Spooktacular has come to an end for this year. All of the quests and battles have been deleted; the decorations in Sanctuary have been taken down; most of the costumes have been removed from the store. However, some of the housing items have remained.
- Even without Spooktacular, Ari Dresswell and her costume shop have remained on the corner in Pixiewood Hills. She is now dressed in a Chatty Suit.
- Two Thanksgiving items have returned to the Marketplace this year: Turkey Hat and Turkey Outfit.
- Several new furniture items have been added to the Coin Shop:
- And for any of you "After-the-holiday Sale Shoppers" -- all of the Halloween items listed in the Holiday category of the Marketplace are on sale for 50% off until Spooktacular ends!
- Roland Spore's contest-winning racetrack, called Diamondback, is now located in Snowhill! And there's a new NPC at the track entrance to greet you -- Roland Sporeling!
- Free Realms is now available to play on Mac! You must have OS X Leopard 10.5.8 or higher installed. Iceberg, the Tech expert on the FR forums, states that the TCG is not functioning on Mac yet, but they are working on it. See our full story.
- SOE has announced Super Fan Days! Set to run from November 3 to November 9, 2010, you will be able to purchase Station Cash for half price, when buying 2000 SC or more. This opportunity is open to anyone with a credit card or a PayPal account, so it's a great chance for players outside the US to get in on the deal!
- Only one item found to be added this week: One-Way Teleporter
October 14, 21, and 26, 2010
- Almost all of the updates during these 3 weeks have been for the Super Spooktacular, both returning and new: quests, costumes, housing items, pets, and more -- so check it out!
- Other than that we have 3 new items that can be claimed with free codes: camouflage sunglasses, an animated snack, and an ice cream surprise.
- The October Member's Pack has been awarded.
- The first wave of this year's Super Spooktacular has rolled in to Free Realms. Many items are returning from last year, but there are some new ones as well! According to the in-game ads, more things will be added each week during the month of October.
- The price of all of the Marketplace Flair Shards has been lowered quite a bit. According to Tyrana, on the FR forum, this was to bring the prices of the older items in line with the latest additions.
- The lot that many people have been anticipating is finally available: Blackspore Swamp Lot.
- Three Halloween costumes have made their return to the Marketplace: Chicken Outfit, Carrot Outfit, and Dinosaur Outfit. This year, you can pick your own color for the dino!
- There's also 3 Halloween-themed housing items: Hollowed Out Tree Stump, Spooky Fallen Log, and Spooky Tree.
- Continuing the Halloween additions are 2 new Pet Pals in the Coin Shop: Necrowart Zombie and Baby Black Widow.
- The September Member's Pack was released.
- A big disappointment to many players: Pex has stated on the Free Realms forum that the Facebook app Treasure Trader has been removed. He goes on to say that there are no plans to fix it, so it will not be returning. It was removed because of the many errors, and supposedly because not enough people were using it. Of course, one could argue that it wasn't being used to its full potential because of all of the errors. It seems a shame to abandon something that was very fun (when it worked), so quickly.
- There's a new Armored T-Rex ride, available in 7 colors.
- A new Coin Shop Pet Pal has moo-ved in: the Shaggy Cow.
- Here's the new Coin Shop and Marketplace items for this week:
- There's more new promo items showing up. These 2 are from the Legend of the Guardians movie (© Warner Bros).
- There's also 3 older items that have started showing up with the ads again: T-Bone Steak Outfit, Turkey Leg, and Iron Golem Goggleguard. So for anyone that missed them the first time around, start hitting that F5 refresh button!
- There have been some changes to Combat! According to Chris Magoun, a Combat Designer on FR, the bonus objectives have been returned to almost all static (non-roaming) encounters and the Coin Shop Spheres have been upgraded. They now hit multiple targets and have a new visual effect.
- Completing the new bonus objective has a terrific reward! Immediately upon completion, you are given a new piece of armor in one of 22 possible colors. That means that every level of armor, including level 20, can now be owned in all of the Coin Shop and Marketplace colors! And no wheel-spinning is involved!
- There's a new game application on Facebook, called Free Realms Treasure Trader!
- When you allow the app to work, you're given a number of items. You have the choice of either giving them to your friends, or trying to snag other items from your friends. Of course, your friends can either give to, or snag from, you as well.
- When an item is taken from you, you will have to answer a trivia question about FR to get it back. If you answer incorrectly, your friend gets to keep the item.
- When an item is given to you, you will also get a question to answer, this time to determine whether you keep the item.
- All of this giving, taking, and answering is to fill your progress bar, so you can get a code for a free in-game item. Every question you answer correctly; every item you give (and your friend keeps for correctly answering); and every item you successfully snag (meaning your friend missed the question) -- earns you 10% of your progress.
- Unfortunately, some people have been reporting problems with the app: questions not appearing, items unclaimed for more than 24 hours not being returned to the owner. The problems with the codes and progress bar seems to be fixed. If you run into trouble, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app -- that seemed to help a few people.
- The codes give you some very nice items including pets, weapons, houses, housing items, and flair shards. If you get an error message that a code did not work for you, it means that you already have claimed that item on your account. Try using it on another account or giving it to a friend.
- The August Member's Pack was distributed yesterday.
- A Husky dog named Ski has been added.
- The Wugachug Lot can now be purchased.
- All of the new Marketplace and Coin Shop items have the Wugachug theme:
- New items have been showing up in the advertisement links that appear on the profile page. These free items are related to Tinker Bell, and include the first pair of wings that can be worn by humans! Tinker Bell is © Disney.
- There's a new lot: Shrouded Glade Lot.
- The new ride, that was discussed and decided on by people at the FanFaire panel discussion, is now in-game: Beach Ball.
- You can now teleport to specific areas of your housing lot. The Two-Way Teleporter will be very convenient for those members that like to build, but want the ease of getting to a certain area of their construction quickly.
- In the Coin Shop, there's 2 new Fairy Pet Pals, a boy and a girl.
- There was a small update this time, with just Marketplace and Coin Shop items added:
- Domo has come to Free Realms! Domo is © NHK-TYO.
- Other Marketplace and Coin Shop items:
- To the delight of players, the Daily Spin button has been returned to the Welcome Screen, and ahead of schedule! It's located bottom-center, right next to the More button.
- The deadline for the Lifetime Membership offer has been extended until August 16th.
- There are a number of summer-themed items in the Marketplace and Coin Shop:
- There is a new Welcome Screen. It combines the old Welcome Screen info with the Game Guide, so you can access it from either location. Plus it eliminates the extra pop-up screens when you enter the came.
- Unfortunately, a side effect of this update is that the Daily Spin icon has gone missing. You can still get the spin, but you have to wait until you have been in-game long enough to get the Coin Wheel screen to pop up, and the Daily Wheel will be there as well. Pex has stated that they are working on a fix for it, but don't expect it to be updated until the week of August 11th.
- There have been some changes to the Combat system. The number of knockouts has been reduced -- all of the instances that used to have 15 are now down to 5. Players report that the end-boss fight seems easier, or at least there seems to be less button-pushing monotony.
- The Track in Sanctuary is finished. Manager Shin says his best time is 29 seconds and challenges you to beat that.
- The July Member's Pack has been distributed.
- There's new items in the Marketplace and the Coin Shop:
- Rio Cloudjumps and his quests are finally working correctly on all servers.
- A new pet: Monkey, available in 6 colors.
- A new ride: Saber-Tooth Tiger, available in 8 colors.
- New Coin Shop items:
- The problem with characters falling through the Briarheart Palace floor should now be fixed.
- The problems with Rio Cloudjumps are still occurring, apparently. He was back in the game shortly, on all servers, but is now only available on server 10.
- The biggest news this week is the availability of a Lifetime Membership. This special membership is available to purchase for $29.99 USD, and the promo runs from July 16 to August 2, 2010. For more details, see our news story.
- According to Chris Magoun, a Free Realms Combat Designer, there have been some changes made to combat:
- Difficulty has increased in tier 2 through 5 encounters. This includes a change in the number of mobs in each instance.
- The Hewey's Escape dungeon has been revamped. Since all new players get transported to Highroad Junction, there's a good chance this will be the first combat instance they do. So it now makes a bit of a tutorial for them.
- The Tavern Cellar boss fight with Cal has had some minor cosmetic changes. There's a new visual effect before Cal's wand turns someone into a duck.
- Starting with this update, there will be Daily Activities to keep players interested. There's 2 of them to get us started:
- New housing items, and the return of a clothing item, in the Coin Shop:
- In the Marketplace, we have a new item and the return of 2 other items:
- We also have 2 new versions of Hoverboards: the Basalt Surfboard (available in 7 colors) and the Fiery Hoverboard.
- Although Summer Camp was supposed to end today, Pex has given us the word that it will remain around for a while longer. No news on a specific ending date though, so enjoy the quests and items while you can.
- There's a Wooden Surfboard version of a hoverboard, available in 6 colors.
- Chuck, the groundhog pet, has developed a wicked sense of humor. He has donned a snorkel, mask, and strap-on shark fin, and is pretending to be a Landshark. You can purchase him in the Marketplace, in 6 colors.
- New items in the Coin Shop:
- And new items in the Marketplace:
- There are 2 new Rides: a Tiger, which is available in 8 colors, and a Surfboard, available in 7 colors.
- If you'd like to go for that Robgoblin look at your house, there's several new housing items (in both the Marketplace and Coin Shop) to help you do just that:
- If you don't want to jump from block to block to reach new heights at your house, you can now use the new Short Range Elevator Platform and Long Range Elevator Platform, in the Coin Shop and Marketplace respectively. Now all we need is an Elevator Music Boombox!
- For those of you with race tracks or obstacle courses, you can now purchase Checkpoint gates. You can see an example of them in use at the under-construction track in Sanctuary. They are available in bundles of 2, 5, or 20.
- A number of items have returned to celebrate the 4th of July, a holiday in the United States.
- July 2nd, at noon PDT, begins both the Double Station Cash Weekend and Free Trial Membership Weekend as part of the Independence Day celebration. See our full story for more details.
- Pex has stated, on the official forums, that this update has also instituted a change in the treatment of Members-Only rides in Free Realms. As of July 1, 2010, if you purchase a ride, you must maintain your membership to continue the ability to ride it. If your membership lapses, you will not be able to use that ride. However, any rides purchased before this date will be grandfathered, so those rides can be used without membership. This will affect every ride that can be bought in-game as of this date, since all of them are Members-Only purchases.
