Developers Answer Mage Questions

World of Warcraft developers have answered some players' questions regarding mages, and Vaneras has posted them in the class' official European forum. The questions are quite specific, ranging from why the molten armor spirit change is a nerf to so many players, to why frost is lackluster in PvE. The last question focused on the the fact that some fans feel their mage concerns are not being heard. Here's the team's response:

"Just understand that your concerns and our concerns are not always in perfect agreement. We like to get feedback from the community, but ultimately we don't sit down and say "How can we address all these problems that the community wants us to fix?" We have to do what we think is right for the game. Sometimes you are going to applaud those changes and sometimes you might not 'approve' of the change."

You can read the Q&A below. What do you think about the answers? Head on over to our Mage forum if you'd like to take part in more discussions surrounding the class.

Top 10 Arena Tourney Qualifier Teams as of Today

Blizzard poster Aratil has released the top 10 teams of the 2009 Arena Tournament's online qualifier as of today. Of the 10 teams, seven are Death Knight/Paladin/Warlock trios. The other three are Death Knight/Paladin/Hunter, Hunter/Mage/Shaman and Hunter/Shaman/Warlock.

The top team, BARKSDALE CREW, is comprised of the popular DK/P/W trio. They have 156 wins and 54 losses with a team rating of 2501. But to show that the hero class isn't necessary to reach the top ranks, the monkey attack squad is in second with the H/M/S trio. They have 103 wins and 48 losses for a team rating of 2450.

To view the full ladder ranking for the qualifiers, just visit the Armory. The top 10 can be found after the jump.

Blizzard Previews New User Interface Updates

UPDATE: In case you haven't seen them yet, cafeen has posted links to some of our information pages for these user interface updates. You can find his post here.

In anticipation of patch 3.1, the Blizzard team has put together a preview of the new user interface features that will be debuting with the update. The page contains all sorts of information, including all of the recent changes to the dual spec feature. While the minimum level to use this ability was originally 80, it's been lowered to 40 after testing and feedback. Also, you no longer have to use a Lexicon of Power to make the switch.

In addition, the preview discusses the new equipment manager, which will allow you to save gear sets and switch between them; an objectives tracker to keep track of multiple quests and achievements at once; the ability to choose your role in the looking for group tool; and the ability to queue for Battlegrounds from anywhere in the world.

So whether you're on the PTR or not, what do you think of these changes? Will you be more likely to use the LFG tool once the patch goes live? Do you plan to take part in more BGs? Are you pleased with the direction the dual spec feature has taken during testing?

Level Restrictions Applied to Lake Wintergrasp

Blizzard poster Bornakk recently listed a bunch of in-game fixes that have been applied since mid-February. One fix was implemented on Saturday that applied level restrictions to Lake Wintergrasp:

"Only players level 70 or higher can count towards the tenacity tally or obtain the tenacity buff and get credit for victory or defeat. In addition, only players level 50 or higher will be able to use the portal to Wintergrasp."

Previously on March 6, modifications were made to the Ring of Valor arena, including the removal of the gates. Also, the small side pillars now start in the up position. Keep reading the rest of the in-game fixes after the jump.

Blizzard Kicks Off 1st Global Writing Contest

I know the ZAM community is full of some creative writers. Blizzard has just announced its first global writing contest, and to enter all you need to do is submit a 3,000- to 10,000-word story written in English and set in the Warcraft, StarCraft or Diablo universe. You have until April 12, so now's the time to hop on the computer or sharpen your pencils.

Since it's a contest, there are prizes involved. The grand prize winner will win a trip to Blizzard Entertainment headquarters in southern California to meet the Blizzard writing staff. The winner also gets a Frostmourne replica worth $429.

Seven runners-up up will get signed copies of archives. If you'd like to enter, here's all the rules.

Arena Records Feature Added to Armory

If you head over to the Armory, you'll notice a new Arena Records feature that includes tools to to track and measure the performance of every Arena team. Here's all the details, straight from Blizzard poster Bornakk:

  • "The Match History tab displays every Arena match that a team has played during the season in an interactive graph showing the date, opposing team, and result of each match.
  • The Opponent History tab displays a team's Arena matches in relation to the opposing teams faced, which helps track performance against particular team compositions.
  • The Match Reports display the same end-of-match results and statistics that appeared in-game."

This seems like a good way for teams to both track their own performance as well as study their fiercest opponents. What do you think? Will you be using this feature?

Glyph Vendors Added in Dalaran on PTR

If you're on the public test realm for patch 3.1, keep an eye out for the new glyph vendors in Dalaran. According to Dresorull, there's a vendor for each class located in "The Scribes Sacellum." They will all have glyphs available for sale.

As always, the purpose of this addition is to test for bugs. If you find any, be sure to report them using the UI tool or the official forums.

If you log in and don't see the vendors, Dresorull has said they will spawn back once the servers are stable again.
