So troubled and tragic is the history of my people that we must resist the temptation to fall into despair. Centuries of war against the powers of darkness have caused a great weariness within our souls. It is little wonder that so many of our kin have given in to their dark passions and forbidden desires, joining the traitorous Witch King in Naggaroth. When a shadow falls upon my heart, I watch the Great Eagles that soar above the Anulii Mountains to the east. So magnificent and so untouched by evil are these wondrous creatures that I feel as if my spirit is soaring with them among the clouds. I am renewed by the sight of them. - From the writings of Tiraenor Windrunner, High Elf poet and philosopher

An ancient race, the Great Eagles have dwelled in their mountain aeries for centuries.

The Great Eagles are large enough that they can, if they so choose, consent to be used as mounts. Their long friendship with the High Elves has occasionally resulted in the Great Eagles allowing Elves to be borne into battle on their backs. The birds will only offer this service when confronted with an exceptionally dire threat.
Far more common is the Great Eagle' a use as a long range scout. The eldest of the High Elves are capable of speaking with the great birds. The Eagles' value as messengers and scouts is obvious, as it is difficult for any opposing force to escape their watchful eyes.
