Treasure Caskets can be found by defeating monsters in the original areas of FFXI. Upon defeating a monster, there is a 10-percent chance the monster will drop either a blue or brown treasure casket. Blue caskets open automatically, whereas brown caskets must be skillfully unlocked.
The original FFXI areas are: West Ronfaure / East Ronfaure / La Theine Plateau / Valkurm Dunes / Jugner Forest / Batallia Downs / North Gustaberg / South Gustaberg / Konschtat Highlands / Pashhow Marshlands / Rolanberry Fields / Xarcabard / Beaucedine Glacier / West Sarutabaruta / East Sarutabaruta / Tahrongi Canyon / Buburimu Peninsula / Meriphataud Mountains / Sauromugue Champaign / Qufim Island / Behemoth's Dominion/ Ro'Maeve/ Cape Teriggan/ Eastern Altepa Desert/ Western Altepa Desert/ Valley of Sorrows/ Yuhtunga Jungle/ Yhoator Jungle/ The Sanctuary of Zi'tah/ Ru'Aun Gardens
When a monster drops a treasure casket, the casket can be opened by anyone in the party that killed the monster. The caskets despawn in they haven't been opened after 3 minutes.
Blue caskets open immediately upon inspecting them. Brown caskets must be opened using a specific combination:
Blue caskets contain an array of temporary items that can only be used in the areas they were acquired. Brown items contain normal items and equipment.
Caskets may contain armor and weapons that can't be found anywhere else in the game. A special item can be found in each zone where caskets drop:
