Thy move really fast and the Dominance Breaker is not an instant cast, so timing is essential. Also, it seems you can only help one villager at a time so don't try to grab all you see. It also seems true (unconfirmed) that the Dominated Villagers stay on the move and willnot go where a stationary Ascended waits, so you have to keep moving around the town.

When you "help" them, some will be grateful (they turn green), and some will be upset (red) and will have to be dealt with. If he despawns before you kill him you will not get the update. Those that turn green give you the update immediately.
