#1 Nov 26 2005 at 7:30 PM Rating: Decent
hey guys, where do you think is the best place to fish up stonescale eels? I fish them up at Taneris and i havnt experimented with any other locatins. If you guys have any experience and would like to share, can you please tell me where the best place would be to get these things? Also if time or day matters would help. I realy need these fish to make potions for when we do MC runs and other guild things.

Thanks in advance guys

I had fairly good luck in Hinterlands at Revantusk Village pier. Probably not too hard to find a quiet spot elsewhere if you're Alliance. I've heard dusk and night are best for the eels.

My Fishing Buddy stats for Bay of Storms say that Stonescale Eel drops ~21% of the time.

Note, however, that I only fish after 9pm, and that the rate from 9-12 is more like 14%. After midnight server time, though, the rate goes up to closer to 26-28%.

Everything is going to change after the next patch:

Quote:
Schools of fish have appeared around the world that can be fished from a few times before being fished out. These schools tend to contain valuable fish types such as Oily Blackmouth or Firefin Snapper. In some places, wreckage can be fished from for even better rewards.

I bet you will be able to still fish regular areas, just with lower chances of good fish, the pools will probly have a much higher drop rate of desired fish.

I think that Blizz really wants to make fishing more like herbalism and mining. I hope that they also add a "detect fish" ability that will display those schools as yellow dots on the mini-map.

God i really hope not, I like fishing the way it is now. But it could drive fish prices alot higher. They would be harder to catch in large quantities.

This game needs more important things fixed, fishing is fine the way it is now.

So the way that it is supposed to work, at least if you look at it like the fishing tournament, is that you will still be able to fish just like you can today, just flipping out into the briny deep to catch whatever comes your way. The drop rates for more valuable fish may go down quite a bit, but Darkclaw Lobster and other commons are going to be just as plentiful in the open sea as they ever were.

There will also be fishing spawns, like in the tournament, that will be much like mining. The spawn will likely be labelled, as it is in the tournament, "School of X". Your drop rate for that type of fish/eel/whatever will likely be in the 85% range, just as it is in the tournament, with the possibility of getting other valuable catches such as stranglekelp, lockboxes, etc.

So if you just want to feed your kitty, keep on keepin' on. But if you make a living fishing stonescale eel at night (like I do, I don't like to farm Tyr's Hand or any of that when I can make 30g+ per hour fishing and drinking cold beer) then you may have to make some adjustments to your gameplay. There will likely be eel spawns up and down the coast in the zones where that type of fish is currently caught, and there will be some level of competition for those spawns. Raiding guilds may have to go out and get a guild fisherman to round up stonescale for MC/BWL/Ony runs, as the supply may dwindle a bit with lower drop rates and low spawn rates. On the bright side, pricing may actually go up a bit due to demand.

Fishing is currently nerfed. It has been since 1.1. For those of us who enjoy fishing as a significant part of our gameplay and income, this is high on our list of things for the 1.9 patch, and I for one am glad to see it coming. Sure I won't be able to drink as many beers as I have been up to now while fishing, but I could spare to lose the beergut anyway.

Anyway, just my two pesetas.

Cunning fellow that I am, I plan to avoid that problem by spending even more time fishing.

Hell, even Nat Pagle says "it's also a great excuse to drink. Heavily."

I'm not sure that competition would go up. I usually seem to be the only one fishing wherever I go, and I don't think that a lot of people will start fishing because of the spawns. Of course, that could just be my server - other servers may have a higher percentage of fishermen.

I think you would see competition for stonescale eel nodes go up. Raiding guilds like those babies a lot, and if they can get them fast and easy, they'll find a way to make it happen.

I decided to check this out last night. I got to the bay of storms at 1 am server time and started fishing. With +75 lures, a +20 pole and a +5 hat (total skill=400), it took 70 minutes and 186 casts for 22 eels (11.8%). This is the same as what I get in Tanaris.

Did you lose a lot of fish, or get many no-bites? I found that until I got up to 427 (the max before the fishing tourney started) I was still getting a lot of no-bites, and roughly 1 lost fish per 5 minutes when I was still sub 410.

I'm currently at 447, with Arcanite Pole + Eternium line, Extreme Anglin' Boots, +2 gloves and Aquadynamic Fish Attractor, and as of last night my overall catch rate in Bay of Storms was 19.3% with 255 eel caught, so that's a fairly good sample size.

Edit: Fished again tonight in BoS, 97 caught fish, 23 eel, 23.7%, all after midnight. Probably had 5-8 no bites total.

I only had a couple of no-bites when I went fishing there. I don't get as many of those as you do. 5-8% no-bites seems somewhat high. your actual number of casts was 102-105 (not 97), lowering the percentage a little, but not to my level.

Here's a thought though --- could your stats be affecting your fishing vs mine in any way? I know that they aren't supposed to, but there has to be a reason why the difference is so great. here's where you can see mine: http://wow.allakhazam.com/profile.html?243164
