Historical Information

In Greek mythology, the ketos (plural ketea) is a term that denotes a very large fish, a whale, a shark, or a sea monster. The Greek heroes Perseus and Herakles were both said to have defeated a ketos.

The word cetacean, which refers to aquatic mammals such as whales and dolphins, is derived from the word ketos.
