mostly its because those who sell nq and HQ, are those who raid gods and the BCNMS so they never lose money. and those who sell the ingots, are those who hire mercs to get damas to sell, so they sell it higher.

They are trying to sell currency for 50k per single unit and 5mil per 100 unit. Well I guess Relic weapons will become harder to get if you plan on buying currency and items from these FOOLS.
It seems that hjh suggested the ingredients for synthing a Damascus Ingot to be:
Relic Steel x2 Adaman Ore x1 Orichalcum Ingot x1
It does leave two obvious questions, however. Which crystal completes this synth? Most ingots seem to need Fire, but there are many that use Lightning. Also, what smithing level is required? Since the Damascus Ingot is the differentiating and most expensive ingredient in a Haubergeon synth, I'd think it'd be around the same Smithing level as the Haubergeon recipe. In fact, this ingot's recipe might be a higher level to preserve the ingot's price.
Do any of the servers have a stack on AH history? that would be crazy, but i tell you what, if i ever had 40+ mil i'd camp the ah for 12 and post it :p
I believe there is one person on our server who does. Her name is Ostrea.. if your on gilgamesh and have looked at anything pricy her name is usually there. She is a 100+3 gold smith and it seems like she tries to get +1 items. On almost ALL HL +1 items her name is there. I think on all cursed items for smithing she has her name under -1... she is insane smith.
Historicaly Wootz was used to make damascus steel. Wootz was produced in India using a crusible and wood to purify the metal. The recipe here is sticking to the historical accounts Wootz ore + Wood => Wootz ingot
I would speculate that a damascus ingot can be made using a Wootz ingot and another type of steel and maybe a third element (Historical glass) to further purify the metal.
Would guess, if they where going to try to follow historical accounts slightly....
Wootz Ingot + DarkSteel ingot/2x Darksteel ore + glass of some type
option2 A psedo Dasmascus steel can also be made using folded metal and acid.
My guess is darksteel since wootz should be the exotic element in the recipe ruling out tama, or relic (these are also eastern not southern).
I don't ever plan on taking smithing to 100 so I'll never be able to test this.
Edit: I read some of the previous posts and I'd just like to clear up that damascus steel was never made using a high temperature process.
It was a low temp process (red hot not white hot) and it had a lengthy cool off time and was never quenched.
The patterns on the steel where a result of the aggregation of the carbide that occured as a relsult of the slow cool down.
On a side note if the recipe is ever truely descovered, it should be shared. Wootz is minned if it was possible to create damascus from materials that didn't involve HNM drops miners and smiths would be very happy.
The only reprecussion would be that the HNM LS's out there would make slightly less off the kills. This would relax the compition a bit and could make end game much more enjoyable for everyone.
Kirin drops it....says on this website, thats how i got here, anyway, The Damascus Bladeis the legendary weapon for Mitsurugi in Soul Calibur II, which would be a prettycool weapon to have in FFXI, like you could make that sword with this ore...
Could a high level smith by chance desynth one of these (if you have 1 mil to kill heh)...good research <rate up> from what you have said here is my guess...
Desynthing is pretty much getting materials out of a finished item, such as equipment, beastman items, or fish. You cannot, for example, desynth cotton cloth, iron ingot, ram leather. But you can desynth things that are made out of them.
An enterprising blacksmith might be able to desynth a Haubergeon and get a Damascus Ingot, or possibly even the rumored ingredients. I'd bet however, he'd get a few darksteel ingots. Looking at the recipie, probably around 4-6?
This is of course, complete and total speculation, and I'd have to doubt the sanity of a blacksmith who actually desynths a Haubergeon.
This is an old post im responding to, but i felt it necessary.
You get darksteel, iron, steel, bronze and such ingots in the game out of desynthing, thats how most smiths get to level 50 on quadav backplates turning them into iron/darksteel ingots.
I'm not sure about relic/damascus/any rare ingots because i havent gotten to the point where i have the skill alone(much less the gil) to try and desynth a hauby or higher.
Doing a little research myself I found out a few things and came to a number on conclusions. First, as most of you probably know steel is created when combining Iron (Fe, aka Ferum) is smelted with any number of different elements. Mind you, there is not one single type of steel, it can be combined with many other elements to give it different properties. Damascus steel is steel with (from the source I read) anywhere between 0.4% and 1.6% carbon smelted into the steel. Damascus also has an attractive surface pattern composed of swirling patterns of light-etched regions on a nearly black background. It kind of looks like the gasoline rainbows you see in storm drains. From analyzied pieces of ancient Damascus blades (the last damascus blade was supposably crafted around 1750) modern blacksmiths and bladesmiths have determined that damascus is a series of alternating high and low carbon steels and heating them to a very high temperature in a ceramic cruciable until the carbon in the steel leaks out and creates the water pattern on the suface of the metal. The art of how to create damascus however, as i said before, has been lost. Microscopic pictures of Wootz blades and damascus blades also show somewhat of a "crystaline" pattern in the steel. Supposedly if diamond dust is fused with real damascus as well it will become indestructable. Current "damascus" blades (which are actually fake) are made by smiths simple welding together soft and hard sheets of steel and then etching in acid to give the appearence of real damascus however it is no where near the "legendary" strength and toughness of real damascus. Which leads me to try and figure how the hell, if it is possible, to craft a damascus ingot. After readin the posts, we ca assume that there are at least 2 tama-hagane in the recipe. I have also come to the comclusion that a piece or two of relic steel is also in the recipe. One of the main reasons why i beleive that relic steel is in the recipe is that, relic steel in the AH is under smithing materials, and that as far as any of us know and what allakhazam had posted, relic steel isn't in any recipes. It also has the line in the decription about being forged far to the south, which the tama-hagane also has in its description which makes sense because damascus was used in weapons in Asian, Eastern European countries (i.e. Damascus, Syria)and India. And with the relic steel and tama-hagane there is most likely some other ingridient and most likely it is a metal other than steel/relic steel, I determined this because in the description on the damascus ingot, it has the word "alloy" and an alloy is a combination of more than one type of metal, when really all damascus is, is different types of steel and being such a high level item and SE being such bastards I am assuming the final ingridient could possible be Orichalum Ore or Adaman Ore, or, as what I think is the most probable some Wootz Ore or a Wootz ingot. Hope this helps, also this is all just conjecture based upon decriptions and actual documented research of real damascus, although many of the sourced i looked through had slightly varying info, please correct me if am completely wrong on any of this. Thanks, hope this helps oh and btw, if anyone does figure out how to craft damascus ingots (if it is possible) please DO NOT post it on any forums, so as not to ruin any economy that there is for the item (*cough* *cough* elemental ore *cough* *cough*) and not have dumbasses leveling up smithing just to make these and then also ruin the economy of haubergeons and then proceeding to **** up the rest of the game until everyone quits and shoots themselves. peace.
-Edit- Doing a little more research I discovered another type of Ore, that now i think, is probably the most likely as one of the key ingridients. It is Molybdenum Ore. I did some research on it as well, and found out the Molybdenum(Mo) is an extremely hard metal with a melting that is only below Tungsten and Tantalum (the two elements with the highest melting points), and one of the sources i looked at said this; "It is a valuable alloying agent, as it contributes to the hardenability and toughness of quenched and tempered steels. It also improves the strength of steel at high temperatures." Sound like somthing that could be used in crafting some Damascus ^^?, however allakhazam doesn't say what drops it or how to get it and if it is a CoP item and I am completely wrong, someone shoot me.
excelent research into history. While I hope that there is a way to smith these as you say, I somewhat doubt it. Trust me I wish this was an incorrect statement, but looking at how the crafting recipes are a matrix design, the actual creation or synthing is specifically planned.
IE each synthable item is like a combination lock. 1 delimiter * up to 8 ingrediants. So on one hand it isnt possible if SE didnt code it. However in allot of ff games there is always those little things that you need to do something just right... (Anima summons from 10 comes to mind.)
All in all it does make a person wonder what would happen if you tried undocumented recipes. I would really LOVE to find an unpublished recipe, even if it wasnt something like your "holy grail" ignot hidden synth. I wish ya the best of luck. ^^
Damascus ingot is not crafted it is a bcnm/hnm drop only way i will ever believe you is show me a screenshop of someone crafting it
People kept telling me that Tama-Hagane isn't crafted, but i just made one. I also saw one jp craft damazcus ingot once, second time he failed, lost 2 tama-hagane and left. If someone knows how to make cheaply over 1mil worth ingot, you think they'd tell you?
If my memory serves, IRL this steel was made by sealing iron with some organic materials in a sealed container then heated over days/weeks. Since it was a closed environment, the carbonization of the iron could become a higher percentage and thus would be structurally stronger. Despite the name, it was not made in Damascus, but rather this was a major trading point for the material.
Hah! Yeah, when I seen this on AH, the first thing I thought about was "Soul Calibur II" and Mitsurugi's Damascus Sword. Supposedly the metal is very soft, and doesn't take impact all that well. Because you can't block with this sword in SCII.

Yeah the name of this ingot ringed a bell soo i dug alittle and found this out;
turns out Damascus (also known as Ukku steel) is actualy the strongest form of steel ever developed, it has the hardness of the finest steels used in Japanese and Western swords but is far less brittle. The process of making it dates back to the 5th century B.C. originating somewhere on the subcontinent of India. Industrialized attemps to make it have all failed.
makes sense that only HNMs and gods drop it ingame.
