The epitome of classical Japanese literature, Hakkenden, is actually a story concerning the katana Murasame. While the story has never been fully translated into English, and given it's length it probably never will, it was turned into an anime series called "The Legend of the Dog Warriors." Not a widely circulated story, it's a somewhat sad tale, but still a good watch. I highly recomend it for anyone who wants some more interesting tales about Murasame.
well if you watch Gundam Seed Destiny, the production type of mobil suits from Orb is called Murasame, which is a simplified design of Freedom.
As for the katana itself, Murasame is the "good" one, while Muramasa is the evil twin, much like the previous poster said.
I haven't heard a lot of stories about Murasame so I dont really know about it, but Muramasa is belived to have killed many many people and its blade is eager to taste the blood, anyone who carries it will be mind-controlled by it and becomes evil and blood-thirsty.
Just a little side info. ^^;
edit..... It is believed that Murasame's blade will spring water when it's drawn and it will clean the blade itself when it's used to kill someone.
However, Murasame is a sword only exists in lengend, while Muramasa is a real blade, or maybe we shall call it "real blades". Because there is not only one Muramasa, it is only a label of the their craftsman, at least 3 or 4 people were using the same label at the time(they were all father/son kind of relationship).
Muramasa was not that "evil" until Ieiyasu anounced so, because 3 generations of Ieiyasu's were killed/heavily injured by Muramasa blades(not sure if they were the same ones, most likely not)
Murasame is also _rumored_ to be the same blade as Muramasa, when Murasame is used to kill 1000 people, a curse(or something like that) will be activated, its blade will covered by water and will become black in color.
Yah I know the above sounds complicated and confusing, but that's the what the japanese history/legend books say, not the official ones though.
The only "legend" I've heard of involving Masamune and Muramasa was that if you place a Muramasa blade in a shallow stream, a leaf that flows down the stream will be cut cleanly in half by the sword. But if you place a Masamune blade in the stream, a leaf will go around the blade to the right out of respect for the blade. It also has something to do with the blade's respect for life. Different between good and evil and all that. This has nothing to do with Murasame, but yeah. Interesting nonetheless.
We got this GK from ash dragon and gave it to our SAM. I haven't seen him use it yet so I don't know if it has additional effects. If it does, I will post it here. I'll ask him to use it sometime and test it out...He's also lvl 75 thf and plays thf most of the time...So I haven't had a chance to see him use it.
What does the sword actually do? are there any hidden elements? How often does the water damage kick in? There must be something we are missing about this sword.
Other Items that have -5% hp are awesome. Why is this so bad? I wonder If it either constantly adds water damage, or it has some amazing hidden effect that has to do with healing rain.
Murasame is japanese for a divine healing rain. This is also evident in FFT,because the Murasame skill was a bloody rain animation that healed everyone around you for 320 HP.
The evil rival swordsmith your thinking of that rivaled Masamune was Muramasa.
I'm sure that them fighting the dragon has a bit more to do with the dragon's heart and blood and then people that want the GK can lot on it... could just be a guess...
Ok, Masamune of the Soshu style is the most influential swordsmith in Japanese history. The basis of the katana is the "ha" or blade needs to be a hard steel to maintain the edge and cut, while the "mune" or back of the sword needs to be soft to bend so the sword does not easily break. (The mighty oak breaks from a strong wind, but the bamboo sways and moves with the wind) The soshu style of swordmaking that Masamune founded was a revolutionary 7 fold technique where all sides of the blade were a hard steel to protect the blade, but the core was soft to allow it to bend and not break.
Now Muramasa lived a few hundred years later than Masamune and got the "Evil" wrap from Tokugawa Ieyasu the shogun. See several of his relatives were killed by Muramasa swords and supposedly he cut himself on one or something so he forbade all his men from ever carrying them...A few hundred years later the are made legendary by the stories being made into "Tall Tales" (Anyone see Big Fish?)
So also understand that with both of these guys there is no "one" Masamune or Muramasa, there were several made, probably more Muramasa blades out there now than Masamune ones. But I think there is a Masamune on display in a museum in Japan somewhere.
Now Murasame...I really don't know what Murasame is... I've looked around all the nihon-to forums and can't find anything on it and my sensei has never heard of "Murasame" Perhaps it is a single sword made by some legendary smith... There are other legendary swordsmiths besides Masamune and Muramasa, such as Osafune, Bizen, Koutetsu. Some of them are the smiths, and some of them are the school of smithing. The best thing would be to ask some Japanese guy who studies swordsmanship.

Um, being as this GKT drops off a rather annoying HNM to kill and it has worse damage than some RARE/EX GKTs that drop off of sky NMs or Amikiri, does anyone know if this had any hidden effects? For instance, how Harpe does full damage to undead types? I just don't see why it only does 72 damage when it should have like 82+? Anyone agree with me? :/
I doubt it. Ash Dragon is probably the only HNM I know that no one gives a damn about and will be up... well, practically always because no one claims him.
SE has probably given it another drop too, it's just that we all know it's such a ****** drop from a ****** (annoying) NM, that no one even gives a crap to what it does in it's little corner over there.
sorry about that, not really used to the forums and hit enter -.-... anyways, the gkt's are only for use w/ sam and the uchigatana's are available to sam/nin...this gkt is an uchigatana, so it is available to sam/nin, but not warrior.

RE: this legends sounds like some thing off Inuyasha
The Murasame was also rumored to have the ability to condense water in the air around the blade, hence the additional water effect placed on the GK in game.
I also heard a rumor that some hacker once looked at the weapon files and found a level 80 greatsword called the Ultima sword. Interesting dont you aggree. That was said by one of my ls members though so i havent seen the primary source. Can anyone say about it?
im not sure if it was the ultima sword but i know u could turn a really high level greatsword with damage:1(cant remember the name) and do some quest to turn it into something. once again not sure of this.
As much as I'd like it to be true, I wouldn't believe everything you hear. There will always be the myth of an UltimateSword just past someone's reach.
Sage Sundi is FFXI'S Online Service Manager. I have seen pictures of him in some interesting equipment lol. He had lv 81 Adaman Cuirass (and the whole Adaman set)----yes, I said lv 81. He also had a lv 70 Balmug (G sword) I have yet to see or hear of a pic of him with an Ultima Sword. The pic was taken in Beta. It's obvious that the stats for certain items have changed since then. Now Adaman Cuirass is lv 73, and has 52 def, 8 mp, 4 vit, 4 mnd, and 3 enmity. His was lv 81 and had 48 def with no other attributes. Looked the same though....If I see the "Ultima Sword" (assuming it exists), then I will obviously post it on every forum known to mankind.

your prolly referring to a relic blade or GS. You get that in certain dynamis's (Dynamis: in short terms a place for very high lv ppl 0_0) then you go on a quest spending MILLIONS of gil to make it a very strong weapon (sword, axe, etc.) and get a nifty new WS with it^^
Yeah, some weapons do break the rules. There's a *Lance* that is able to be used by WAR, PLD, SAM, and DRG...that's the ONLY Lance that's not Dragoon Exclusive.
there is a great sword that black mages can equip at lv 70. Can't remember what its called though. Tell you what, hold your breath and I'll run home from work and check it out!
