Information on the Test Server

Zorillius, a producer with EverQuest, puts in a plug for the Test Server: ==================================================== Greetings all, We’ve been putting a lot of thought lately into what we can do to ensure that the Test server continues to be fun for players and useful to the developers. There have been a lot of ideas tossed around and we want to open a dialogue with the testing community about a few of the ones we feel are worth doing. Right now, players on test already receive the following benefits: Double experience All Veteran's Rewards activated regardless of subscription time Dev interaction Exclusive Community First look at new things In addition to those benefits, we’d like to add a few more since the Test server has some unique circumstances that live servers do not. It’s very important to us that Test is a vibrant server with a population capable of properly testing content, both old and new. So here is what we have in mind for new test server bonus features: Reset all reuse timers for AAs/Veteran Rewards after each server reset. Loosening restrictions on the flagging system so that content can be tested more rapidly. Linked chat channel between Beta & Test to ensure easy access to Devs. Change spawn timers on boss NPCs so they aren’t affected by server down time. We would also like to give the current Test Server Community the opportunity to invite others to play on the Test Server with them, so we are working on "Grumbuk's Buddy Invitations". This system will allow the Test Community to earn buddy invitations based on days played on Test. These buddy invitations can be sent to other players on Live servers which will enable the player to have their character copied – not transferred – to the Test server. We’re hoping people will take this opportunity to invite more good people to the Test community who will then discover that it’s a fun place to be. Due to the unique advantages that currently exist to Test players, we will continue to be firm on the restriction about transferring characters off of the Test Server. Character transfers off of the Test Server are not going to be considered. Also, please know that we have no intentions of doing any character wipes on the Test server or any other server. The last character wipe was done in early 2000 and we have no intentions to do any future character wipes on the Test Server. Feel free to make constructive suggestions and discuss your ideas in this thread. Thank you, Zorillius

Test

I find it interesting that after the wipe of 2000 that Sony is now asking players to come back to test. I was an original test player in 1999 and lost a year of character play time because of that wipe. That said, I had a very good time playing on test and was saddened to leave after the wipe. Now they are saying that they won't wipe the server again. I could only imagine what the population would be like if they hadn't wiped their original testers.

Is there any way to cut down on the patch times between the live server and test? Any info would be great
Switching between test and normal

Simple method to not have that wait time for downloads when playing both a main on the normal servers and helping with the test server: Create a seperate file (call it whatever, SonyII is easy) and copy EVERY file in the original Sony file over.

Now open, copy the patcher of the test folder to desktop, and click on that icon when you want to log to the test instead of the normal Norrath.

The only drawback? Computer storage, you essentially have loaded EQ on your computer twice, and the files are none too small. But if you have the space, I would recommend it. Cause a five minute wait anytime you log back and forth gets old.
buffs
# Aug 23 2005 at 1:22 PM Rating: Decent
Buffs are the pits, u cant do without em but a complete pain in the ***** now come the tricky part ( over to u guys at EQ )

Adjust everyones stats to represent there potential with max permissable buffs

What do u get ?

No down time buffing
Cleric can heal
Shammys can slow
Warriors can just tank
Monks can just fight and pull
Ranjurs can shoot the tanks in the back
Bards can sing all the normal stuff ( rumour has it they can pull also )
Beastys can spend more time picking fleas out of there pets ( ohh and dps )
Paly's have more time for polishing there armour and looking gay
etc etc

Yes there would be a lot of balencing involved, i mean **** loads, but imagine a game where u could just get on and play without buffing ))))

DO u realy want to spend half your like asking for buffs or do you want to kill Dragons ?
RE: buffs
# Aug 28 2005 at 1:57 AM Rating: Decent
That has got to be the worst suggestion for game changes I have ever seen..

Here is an alternative: if you cant live without certain buffs, then make a new character who can cast those buffs. Otherwise make do with how it is, or go where you dont need buffs (yes the zones and mobs do exist for any class, myself and friends been doing that many times when solo and without buffs. How I found out a warrior soloes just fine at level 60, just have to go to the right place).
All Veteran's Rewards activated regardless of subs

All Veteran's Rewards activated regardless of subscription time sounds nice but defeats the entire purpose of it being a "veteran" reward doesnt it?
RE: All Veteran's Rewards activated regardless of subs
# Aug 26 2005 at 2:03 AM Rating: Default
It's only on Test, not on Live. On Live servers you have to wait for the rewards one year at a time. On Test, this gives you a chance to see what they're like and hopefully make you more excited about playing the game longer.....
Well, for one thing...

One thing that I would like to see on test if nowhere else, would be the ability to solo in an LDoN, since there's so seldom anyone to group with. Part of the reason that I spend most of my time there soloing, is because of the weird hours I have available for game time, (RL takes precedence), and when I DO get a chance to get in game, the LAST thing I want to do is spend what little time I have trying to find someone to group with.
RE: Well, for one thing...
# Aug 26 2005 at 2:12 AM Rating: Default
Solo LDoNs would be VERY nice, especially with the veteran rewards. But,SOE doesn't like soloing...they want to force players to group together "as a community"...it doesn't matter if you get along or one of the players is a jerk who pulls 5 or 6 mobs at once,"cuz it's da bomb"......
I prefer soloing and only like to group when I'm in the mood to do so. I've slowly been losing interest in EQ over the past 2 years+ because of this "forceful grouping".
Make it free!!
# Aug 22 2005 at 1:28 AM Rating: Decent
If you want to make the population on test server bigger, just make it so you dont have to pay the montly fee. (youd still have to buy the game and expansions). but that would bring a whole bunch of new players or players from others MMORPG. It would be a reward for testing that neverending game. just my 2 cp

Would love to be copied to Test

Think it would be great to be copied an play on the test server. I would not be much interested in trying to start a lvl 1 there though.

Start as level 1, enter game, type the command /testbuff. That makes you level 25 on Test server, gives you basic gear, all spells to level for your class, and skills maxed.

To go higher, you need ot level normally. Its a hard server, since there is no economy to speak of and few other players. You need ot be self sufficient, but that has its own rewards.
Interesting...

I think SOE has some interesting ideas for boosting the test server population. I hope this means that they are planning on actively listening to the folks that play there. I have heard many players from test stating how their reported buggs and feedbacks are ignored and errors are pushed to live. Maybe I am hopelessly optomistic on this, but it would be nice to see. A small population on test server, followed by ingnoring bug reports makes for a terible testing system. I hope this is attempt to increase the population is combined with taking feedback seriously. I might even start a toon on test if they do. Although the thought of starting over makes me want to hurl...

You can patch going to Test, and then patch back again when returning to your main server.

I do this fairly frequently so I have separate installs for Test vs production, it saves the patching time.
I love test, however..

A few things you should keep in mind about test server.

1. Population is ultra low on test, from what Ive seen on live servers ( Drinal mainly ) there are more people in trader mode then there is normally on test playing.

2. Dont plan on farming plat and buying your BoC in our Bazaar, the same 10-17 vendors are always on selling the same low-mid level gear.

3. Test is an old server, that is high levels seem to be in 1 of the 2 big Guilds on test, Primal Brood ( old old guild ) and Friends Rebellion if you plan on doing any, and I mean any raiding you will need to be either in one of those 2 Guilds or in a small guild that they ALLOW to raid with them, I think they both use the DKP system so plan on a few raids before you get any good swag.

4. Plan on Proddie ( live server players slang ) swarms when Live servers go down for maintaince, That is alot of level 25 test buffed players who will play for 2 hours on test and will be begging endlessly for gear/buffs/plat.

5. Begging is normally really frowned upon on test, as is using /shout /ooc excessively and there will be those who will become annoyed by it and let you know. and dont even try to sell stuff via /ooc /gen /shout

6. with the double exp on test, plan on seeing alot of level 50 players who have no idea how to play the class they are, as they have more than not spent all the levels between 25 to 50 in Echo, It is not uncommon anymore to see a level 60 who still has the testbuff gear they started with.

7. If you are into Trade skills plan on either mastering all the trades to make a given piece or spending some time /ooc looking for a person to do the one pottery or whatever combine you may need, you will have more luck on a weekends as the pop goes up alittle, but normally that means the person wants to level/raid and may not have the time to do your combines.

8. Plat has little or no value on test other than for TS, and because of the low trader pop in the Bazaar

9. Once you are on Test, you will be stuck on Test. Plan on 1 grouping or soloing during the week and Possibly Raiding on the weekends.

10. Downtime is alot more common ( though better than in was ) Much more than on a Live server and sometimes with no notice.

These are just some of the things to be aware of before you just come over to test because of the double exp lure, My post is called I love Test, However.... what I love are the peeps I play with. Test Server atm is a Ghost town.

Safe Hunts and Rare drops to you!

Sheesh, tried ot respond several times to this and it never updates. Oh well, try #3.

Obviously the original poster has no responsibility for the copied versions, so its not fair to assign that to them. All of the ' chars converted to ? when they cut and paste to Allah's, not worth making a big deal of though.

How to get on test server
# Aug 19 2005 at 7:26 AM Rating: Decent
Getting onto the test server is easy, go into your EQ folder, generally C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest or C:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest Trilogy, and locate the EQ shield icon labeled TestEverQuest. Double click it, it will patch like normal, and then you log in using you account info, and you're on the test server.
Sounds great.
# Aug 19 2005 at 7:04 AM Rating: Decent
But how do you get into the test server? I remember seeing it on the regular server list, but I don't see it anymore.

RE: Sounds great.
# Aug 19 2005 at 7:23 AM Rating: Decent
Go into sony dir. and find this file TestEverQuest double click and your there
obvious reason
# Aug 19 2005 at 7:03 AM Rating: Default
Probly the single biggest thing that sony could do to get people on test is simply MAKE IT EASIER TO DO .I dont have a clue how to get onto the test server and im betting that atleast 50 percent of the eq population doesnt eigther.
RE: obvious reason
# Aug 20 2005 at 8:45 AM Rating: Decent
No Doubt. They should just let anyone copy thier character over to the Test. I logged onto test a couple times, but the bottom line is: It sucks to start with a level 25 toon with gimp gear, and sony is often expecting us to test high level content.
I mean, its kinda hard to test something like modifying RS with a level 25 toon.

-Not all the changes on test have anything to do with levels per se, but its hard to really test anything if your not playing one of your regular toons.

jjamesge, you are the type of person that would never make it on test server. The gear a level 25 get's is actually much better than what a normal level 25 would have. I'm not talking about your uber twinked level 25, I mean a real one. It's far from gimp. Here on test, we survive and level quite nicely without having to depend on itimization to do so. We also learn our classes much better than what I've seen on live, due to the fact that we level up with our brains, not our gear. Yeah, I'm flameing you and even doing it non-anonymously. Stay on live and play your twinks, bye.
