July Daybreak Outages

UPDATE July 11 8:45am ET: Games are accessible but very laggy. Smed finally apologized on Twitter last night: "..sorry to say more DDOS. I apologize for the issues we are having. I have to own pissing them off and I'm sorry. Just sorry they are taking it out on you, our players."

UPDATE July 10 5:45pm ET: Nothing official has been said in a few hours, but we're seeing occasional (and rare) reports of players being able to get into their game of choice. However, those managing to get into the games are experiencing heavy lag. Hope everyone has good plans for spending their Friday evening elsewhere!

UPDATE July 10 2:15pm ET: Not much has changed. From Daybreak on Twitter: "We are continuing to resolve issues from a Distributed Denial of Service event. We will provide updates as available."

UPDATE July 10 11:30am ET: Looks like Daybreak spoke too soon and the outages are happening again. "We are experiencing issues again which may result in lag, disconnects, or inability to access games, forums, or websites. The team is aware." Since official forums may be inaccessible, keep up-to-date with Daybreak's Twitter or Facebook pages.

Yesterday evening, Daybreak Games experienced DDoS attacks that caused players to be unable to login to any of the games, and those who managed to stay in-game to experience a lot of lag. Around 9:30am ET today the EverQuest II twitter account stated that all games appear to be back up and running.

If you are looking for further details on what occurred yesterday:

  • Smed mentioned Daybreak being DDoS'd here (and here on July 10)
  • EQ2Wire did a nice summary of everything that snowballed up into the attacks here and here (longer explanation)
  • Smed went to reddit to vent

Clicking on the link in the "Smed finally apologized on Twitter last night.." sentence, takes you to a twitter "Page Not Found". Maybe Smed canceled his twitter or maybe someone cancelled it for him. Either way, it's likely his comments incited the DDOS attack.

Stay tuned...

Over the past two days he has deleted his Twitter, Facebook and Reddit accounts. I asked Daybreak to comment on it but they declined.

I just hope they add a few more days to 11th anniversary raids. I was going to do the raids on 7/9. I couldn't get into the games. When things like this happen. The company should add time to all the fables, anniversary, and revamp zones. Here is hoping they do.

SoE use to add an equal amount of time to however long the down time was. Dunno if Daybreak will.

I hope they at least fix the site so I can cancel my recurring subscription. No sense paying for an account I can't play because:
1. Hackers never get the hard jail time they deserve.
2. Daybreak has no means to stop ddos attacks. And yes, they can be prevented. I worked at 2 large corporations that were constantly attacked and we never lost services because of it.
3. Right or wrong, Smedly has made this a personal issue and is waging war against an enemy that he can't do a damn thing about. He needs to stfu and quit taunting these guys and just deal with the FBI. Taunting hackers is how the get their rocks off and Smedly is giving them multiple-orgasms a day. Smedly loses nothing because he knows EQ players only ever threaten to quit and will never quit paying as long as there is hope that the game is still going to be around.

Smed has every right to be venting about these guys and should not be silenced by them. If we lose access to the games because of it so be it. It's the price for standing up against a bully.

So there seems to be some CEO issues. Maybe need a new one that has more tact. I just think he probably shouldn't have provoked them. I don't blame the CEO for getting upset I would be to if I or my family was attacked that way.
Yes hackers are terrible, They need to get a life of course. They should have to answer for the things they do.

no, but its not a defense to go on social media and provoke a known hacking organization when you are the CEO of a gaming company over your personal issues, as he stated they have been attacking "him and his family". Whey did he need to go public and bring the issues to all of his clients?

People on reddit have been saying you cant blame the victim for the actions of the rapist. Smedley is not a victim here now are the LS people rapists. A victim does not tell a rapist "I am coming for you rapist" and bring along their children and a bunch of 16 year old girls in booty shorts. That is what smedley did, he is not a victim, he is a very irresponsible leader of a company who brought his personal issues to work and has now GREATLY effected his paying clients because of it.

After this is over he needs to step down and let someone who can keep their personal issues out of their business when their business involves a high volume of paying clients.

If he steps down they win. Simple as that. Right now they haven't won anything. The moment you give in to cyber terrorism they will win and they will never stop cause they know that they will be able to get away with it and in the end get everything that they want if good and honest people bow down to them and surrender.

This isn't about the CEO, this is about punks getting banned and holding a grudge.
The kid from across the pond doing this has already been convicted of over 50k+
violations yet their Government only gave the kid two years suspended. What
message does that send? He should be serving 30-years to life for terrorism.

No, this has nothing to do with the CEO trying to protect the company.

Although I agree that the sentence that was handed down was a joke, posting the way he did on Reddit is tantamount to kicking the hornets nest. You want the situation to die down, not go toe to toe with the hackers. Smed should remove himself from the spotlight, the quicker the better.

The situation will never die down. Its a form of terrorism. Its not going away any time soon. The real problem is that the FBI couldn't catch a cold if their lives depended on it let alone any cyber terrorists. They were supposedly investing things way before this happened. Does anyone remember that the FBI were investigating that bomb threat that was sent to american airlines back in august of 2014. The plane Smedly was on had to be diverted to a different airport and searched. What ever happened to that? As far as i know they didn't do squat and the people got away with it.
