Lineage 2 Open Beta

Looking to check out Lineage 2 before it gets released? Now's your chance. NCSoft just announced an open beta starting tomorrow. They also announced that beta characters would not be deleted at launch. I played some of the previous beta, and if you are into player versus player, this is a pretty good game. We're hoping to have a site up for it by launch. If you are interested, you can register an account and download the game at http://www.lineage2.com/. For those who want to discuss the game, I added a forum here.

Which is fine until you have a neutral (white and supposedly innocent) player KSing or (worse) training you repeatedly. Because if you attack him to teach him a lesson, chances are he won't fight back and let you kill him, which means you turn red. Guess what then happens? His (also white/neutral) friends, who were hidden round some bushes, come and kill you for your gear without any repercussions to them. I should add here that red players have a high chance of dropping up to 5 items including the stuff you wear/wield. And, should you try to defend yourself against the (white/neutral) gang, your reputation will get even worse.

I will let you draw your own conclusions from this system.

Lineage II worth giving a chance...

I just tried Lineage II beta...and I must say after spending all that time downloading the game, jumping through hoops to get my serial and PlayNC password, and spending over 2 hours downloading all the various patches, I was thoroughly disappointed. Granted, the graphics are great, the world is luch and vast, and the animations/audio audio aspect makes Everquest look rather weak by comparison (in regards to personal character animations). However, I think too much time was invested in the visual experience and not enough time in the actual play experience. Leveling is tedious and boring, with players having to run back to their home city every few levels to 'buy' new abilities. These new abilities are almost completely useless, as if you don't have the right equipment you still won't be able to properly advance.

You can tell a lot of people are trying Lineage after playing EverQuest, because already there are 'traders' in the various home cities, and shouts of 'WTB bow, 19k' are prevalent.

The interface is sluggish and doesn't account for the user base's familliarity with MMORPGs. EQ players beware, hotkey support is limited to say the least. Moving your character with the keyboard is sluggish and unresponsive, and the keyboard itself is unmappable, meaning players are limited to using single clicks to navigate their way through the entire game. This is fine at the early stages, but during castle seiges this can become a problem.

The apparent lack of real character balancing may be a turnoff for some players. Playing a mage at the early levels is nearly impossible. Also, there is a siginficant disparation in the number of available races in Lineage II and the number of races in other contemporary MMORPGs.

Lastly, the porting of Lineage II from an Asian market to an English speaking one is gratingly apparent. NPC text is hard to read, and many contain typos. Text wrapping is non-existant. Resizable windows are scace. Differentiating NPCs from PCs is difficult in certain cases, and also the 'con' system (determining what level a monster is by simply looking at it) is cumbersome and provides little to no real information about your chance of killing your target.

Having said all that I think that Lineage II is a very promising MMORPG. Lag is minimal even when my server of choice was at near max capacity. The graphics, again, are simply amazing and the animations have to be seen to be believed. All in all I would recommend playing Lineage II for 4-6 months and giving them a chance to work out the minor bugs that make the game harder to enjoy.

It will be interesting to see how many players stick around after the game goes live and starts charging later this month.

"Open" Beta
# Apr 01 2004 at 4:14 PM Rating: Decent
Hmm how open is open?

I downloaded the game, created account, went to add game and it prompted me for a 20 digit serial code..

??? after delving into their knowledge database, the only two ways to get this code is to have been invited from the closed beta or to have prebought the box from your local store.

Doesn't sound very "open" to me.

Actually I made it into the open Beta BUT from what I have been hearing (and experiancing) is that the beta is so popular the servers are over-populated and as such the Lineage ppl have stopped newcomers to the Beta =(. Just FYI though.....even with the servers quite literally full to capacity there is little to no lag outside town! Simply amazing =D

PVP

PvP isnt as rampent in L2 as it is in UO.

First of, most of the people in the game huntdown those that PK others.

Second, you lose a lot of options when you go to PVP, mostly you cant train up your skills.

Thirdly, you cant hide that fact your a PK'r your name turns red and your Karma goes bad.

Forthly, with the higher karma you get from killing others, you have a chance to lose more items when you are killed.

These methods make the pking in the game down to a minimum. Usually if there are some griefers, those that pk for the fun of it.. there really low level, and have nothing to lose and die very fast.
non pvp servers

I would imagine there would be non-pvp servers, since lineage 1 has one. Also, in Lineage 1 there is a lvl limit to what PC's you can kill. I believe it was 10 lvls.

Well 3 words just turned me away from trying this "player versus player" I can't stand these type of games. Never fails you always have that hardcore nerd that eats, sleeps, lives the game and they dominate the area. Quake 3 and the like turned me away from that. Well that and the one PvsP server on EQ where a level 65 iksar can attack a level 6 woodelf. Like anybody less then 50 would stand a snowballs chance at escapeing a level 65 that can cast.

Well, supposedly the game has it setup that if someone keeps killing low level players, they will slowly start to gain a bad reputation with NPCs, and eventually they will be KOS to guards and other NPCs. So PvP is there for everyone, but there are major penalties to those that take advantage of it and are careless about it.

they had that in UO - people got around this by using a second account. reputation isn't a very good system for accountability, unfortunately.

...maybe, if they limited the connected log ins to one per IP. hmmm...

And that is exactly why I am no longer in UO. If I want PvP, I'll play a shooter, where everyone us more or less equal save for their personal level of skill.

PvP in Lineage 2 is different than UO. If you attack another player, your name turns purple. Purple means people can kill you without going chaotic (red)

So if you don't fight back, you don't turn purple and the guy who killed you goes chaotic immediately making him KOS to guards, and most players.
