Hope For EverQuest Macintosh Players

Yesterday, we reported that EverQuest Macintosh players would be permanently losing their home server of Al'Kabor, but it seems like there's a small ray of hope amidst those cloudy skies. Later in the day, SOE's John Smedley took to the forums to personally apologize to the EverQuest Macintosh players, noting that he is "personally a Mac (and Apple) fanatic," and that it broke his heart to do this.

Smedley does explain some of the reasoning behind the planned closure of EQ Mac, noting that it uses a very old codebase that only one of SOE's programmers know and that the user population is very small, thereby making it difficult to justify the resource allocation. What Smedley can commit to, however, is to run a new poll for SOE players to see if they would be interested in playing an updated Everquest client for the Mac. Smedley stresses that the poll shouldn't be viewed as "anything more than a commitment to running the poll," but he does say that if the demand is there, then he can make a proper business case for its support.

So what do you think, Mac players? Can you drum up enough support to save Al'Kabor? Go vote on that poll!

I understand the need to continue with a Mac Only server but I gotta say, I started when I had a pc but changed to a MacBook Pro and I am using VMWare and win7. Seems to work fine for EQ... been pretty happy....

Worth a mention...

I've always admired those that stuck with it on the Al'Kabor server, got my vote.

Is it even necessary to have a separate Mac edition anymore? I generally boycott Apple products so not real familiar with them, but can't they run most the same software as PCs anyway? Or is some of the code on EQ so old it is still very PC specific?

It may not hurt the game as a whole, but the Alkabor server's presence doesn't really help either. Its existence is benign. I don't see how it helps the overall community. Could you explain that please?

Just my 2cp.

Separate anymore isn't really necessary (though some oldschool macs will be left out in the cold to my knowledge), but it isn't necessary to poof the community into oblivion either.

Al'Kabor's persistence as a viable community (the population is still there, definately greater than Trakanon and possibley greater than those that actually are still actively playing on Zek) despite being given zero support for 8+ years (the got Hobart for the last year doing some stuff)is the precedent players on PC should want:

Even though the game is dead in development, we'll keep it running if you keep playing.

It is also the only "timelocked" server in existence, something many PC players (this topic ruled TLP general chat the first few weeks) have wanted for years.

Putting Al'Kabor onto a server that Macs and PC can both access (It should be called Al'Kabor) and keeping it locked where the native Al'Kaborians vote to have it locked... would actually provide more options to the greater EQ community. All of this is entirely viable with the "new mac porting" Smedley hints in the post that spawned the official poll.

The Current Mac players may be a fringe part of EQ, that doesn't lessen their value.

PC-only players (like me --though Mac tempts me...) should support this too.

It harms the PC game not at all.

It helps the overall EQ community a great deal imo.
