Confirmed: Addons Are Coming to Rift

UPDATE: MMOUI will be hosting a Rift UI site at http://www.riftui.com! As part of the ZAM Network, the MMOUI team runs WoWinterface, EQ2interface, LotROinterface, and so on. The site should be up and running next week.

Many of the users in our Rift general forum have been discussing the possibility of Addons coming to Rift, and Assistant Community Manager James "Elrar" Nichols has confirmed that the rumor is indeed true. The folks over at Massively noticed that Nichols made the confirmation announcement today in the new Alpha Addon API Development section on the official forums.

Nichols said that the initial implementation of the Addons API has recently been released on the Public Test Shard, and Trion Worlds plans to reveal more details in the coming days. He also touched on their guidelines for the new feature:

"We remain committed to our policy that, when we do release the API to live shards, the API meets our expectations and is supported with the highest standards. Addons, Skins, and other modifications to the User Interface must not interfere with the quality and stability you have come to expect. To that end, we must also ensure that the API will not be abused and allow players to automate their play."

So what are your thoughts on Addons begin added to Rift? What types of Addons do you want to see in the game? Join in on the discussion in our Rift general forum!

Add ons are good :P

Add on's do not play the game for you. That is such a weak excuse against them. If they allow add on's to literally become advanced bots, then yeah I would have a problem with them. I don't want add ons that dps for you, heal for you, tank for you. But being able to put information that is pertinent to me in the same place is incredibly useful.

For example, I hate that right now I cannot move the enemy cast bar. I would love to resize it and put it right smack in the middle of my screen so I can easily detect when a cast is coming off that I need to run from/interrupt; whatever.

I don't understand exactly how a dot timer/buff tracker/CD tracker is playing the game for you. That information is already in the game, albeit, just far more annoying to keep track of due to the limitations that the UI is capable of. I like complicated rotations that require close monitoring of your CDs and buffs/debuffs... as the game is right now its down right annoying to play a class that requires such focus.

Also, add on's like gatherer.. players already print out maps with nodes located and go by that until they have it memorized. Gatherer just takes out the middleman.

You complain precise dot timers are bad, but they are already in the game. A mod would allow you to put it in a spot that is easier to keep track of without forcing you to negotiate through whatever other dots/debuffs/whatever are on the mob that you don't care about. How is that a bad thing?

Boss Mod's might have bells and whistles to let the player know whats coming up, but just a FYI, after you've done an encounter several times you don't need the timers anymore, a good player would just know from experience what moves are coming and to prepare for them. Also, these are a god send for classes that have far more complicated rotations then 2 buttons. Having a sound go off when something bad is coming is just a god send when you have so many other things to pay attention to.
No to AddOns

I do not support the concept of player-supplied addons. Instead I would suggest that Trion develop those AddOns that they feel the players need.

Addons don't ruin a game, people ruin a game.

GearScore itself is informative, people that required ridiculous GS numbers were the real issue. Before GearScore, there were gear checks, it just took more time to do them.

I personally love Addons, and have since EverQuest 1, where they were only cosmetic. They allow me additional in game information instead of being forced to parse through a log file and a third party computation program. They allow me to easily remember the names of alts of my friends, as I have a difficult time with names stemming from real life as well. They allow me additional information on the game that while available on web sites, is A LOT easier to just click the addon and say "Oh, that's right!". In cased like highly disputed addons like GearScore, they give me a goal to try to reach, as I don't care what someone else thinks of my GS while I am Powning them in Deeps or on the Warfront.

The internet is a big world, find people like yourself and play with them instead of complaining. People that have an issue with Addons should just play with guilds that don't use them, as I am certain you can find a community that shares your beliefs.
The begining of the end already?

Problem with MMO's is majority always wins. Problem with this is majority don't know whats good for them. So with time eventually all MMO's in an attempt to appease it's players will eventually become dog crap.

I'm very torn about this...
Sure, I'd like a dmg meter, a threat meter and a CD tracker but...do I want it for the price of a GS addon in rift?
No.
And we all know that there will be one if everyone get the possibillity to make addons.

I wish trion would've made those addons themselves and just add them in a patch in the future.
That news would've made my day.
This kinda ruined it instead:/

I personally think that Combat Scrolling Text addon is needed prety much as well as Buff/Debuff/CD Tracker. I'd like to see when a cooldown is over and to really see what dmg/healing I am doing without following the combat log

got to face it... people are addicted to add-ons!! i would like to see a nice AH add-on, and possibly something like recount so that i can know what rotation puts out more... and a few minor ones wouldn't be that bad... my facebook gets Rift spammed everytime i play the game...

Please no gearscore or dps meters the the entire party can see. All I would really like to see is a nice Auction House addon.

Even if I would prefer that addons wouldn't be implemented instead of risking getting such addons like Gearscore, Bossmods, Chatspamming-Addons (like Wowquote) or any other stuff which influences (the behavior of) players, I think I'll use cosmetic addons and I really hope that Trion only (programmatically) allows such.

@ZAM / RiftUI team: I really hope you'll put up a tools section for external tools, i.e. Manage my addons ;)

PS: WoW this "new thread" think below news is very confusing :O

this better not hit rift. it COMPLETELY ruined dungeon runs and such on my server in WoW. everything u wanted to do, u saw things in trade such as: running uld 10, must have 'insert gearscore here'. and what was wanted, ppl geared for icc 25 heroics!

i think its one of the reasons i like rift so much atm. I DONT HAVE ANY ADDONS PLAYING THE GAME FOR ME ANYMORE. no boss mods to predict whats coming, no drawing on the game world to tell ppl where to stand and so on (blizz broke this one), no advanced gathering tool, no precise DoT timer hovering 3 pixels above my bars, the list goes on.
unlike some ppl, i actually enjoy the challenge of not having addons that play the game for me.
