GDC: ZAM Gets Some Details on the Doctor Who MMO

We sat down with BBC Worldwide's Robert Nashak at the Game Developers Conference to find out more about this upcoming free-to-play browser game.

ZAM: Do you expect it be 2D or 3D? Can you talk about the art style at all?

Nashak: We're not announcing that, but you can imagine if it's browser-based what the experience will be like. It will be graphically appealing. It will be about puzzle solving and using your wits. Much less combat, more wit puzzle solving. We called it “Worlds in Time” for a reason. It's an acronym for wit. We want to bring humor into it, but more importantly we want to make all sorts of people be able to play it and go “wow, this was really compelling and a good social experience.” You're going to see a lot of very innovative cooperative puzzle solving. Cooperative play in general is a big priority for us. It's a social game through and through.

ZAM: Do you want it to be more casual so players can jump in and out easily, or will some players be able to devote a lot of time to it?

Nashak: I think we're going to see players in it a lot. Although, we're very much designing it so people can come in and out as they want. Again, it's a tough balance to strike, but I think we're going to do it. From the design and the work that I've seen so far, someone could spend hours in this world, or someone could dip in for 15 minutes and have a great experience. We're trying to balance it that way.

ZAM: Do you have any idea about when people will start to see parts of the game and get more information?

Nashak: Over the summer we're going to start introducing images from the game hopefully. Then it will go into beta in the fall and we'll start launching it properly by the end of the year.

ZAM: Are you a Doctor Who fan?

Nashak: Deep Doctor Who fan. It is one of the best sci-fi shows I've ever seen. I've always loved Doctor Who. I lived in England for many years, so for me the chance to work on Doctor Who is the chance of a lifetime. Our whole team is really engaged in it and completely obsessed with it.

The thing we're really concentrating on is delivering quality. BBC Worldwide started a game division a year ago with the hope that they could take the most beloved brands in the world and bring them into the game world in a smart way. For us, it's all about quality. Again, the reason we chose Three Rings is they're associated with quality. Is it World of Warcraft? No. But it's something different and something that everyone in the world can play and enjoy. I'm very proud of the stuff we've already done, and I can't wait to show it to everyone.

I don't think the guy is THAT big of a fan. if he was this statement- We wanted Doctor Who to be present with you at all times and be visible. You will be assisting Doctor Who on many different missions would read more like We wanted the Doctor to be present with you... and you will be assisting the Doctor". The only place he is called "Who" is in that horrible movie that takes place on Skaro...
