Ongoing Wintergrasp Changes

I ran across a neat post today over on the beta forums about the new PvP zone, Wintergrasp. Looks like they are going all out to fix many of the PvP imbalances that plague the game currently. Read on for more!

As posted by Kalgan:

Here's a quick update on some of the things coming to Wintergrasp over the course of the next few beta updates.

- Graveyards will be inaccessible to attackers (ie: above normal terrain) to put a damper on gy camping.
- Ranking up will be based on HKs rather than killing blows (was always intended to be HKs)
- In the case of team imbalances, there will be escalating bonuses to the weaker team (for both honor and combat effectiveness... mostly survivability bonuses and potentially easier access to vehicles)
- The losing team will receive a partial bonus at the end of a battle (also based on participation)
- Players will be able to leave Wintergrasp at any time (via a "Leave Battle" UI option similar to leaving a battleground)
- A variety of daily quests will be introduced to the zone, including quests that are relevant when the battle isn't currently active
- Ongoing tuning of vehicle power (they're still on the strong side)
- Ongoing bugfixing and polish

Something else we're hoping to get in, but aren't certain of at this point is the ability to select which graveyard you respawn at.

I still get the feeling Horde will not stand a chance due to population issues. I see they are trying but the fact still remains a team with 100 people is going to win against a team with 15 people.

No player limit, as it's just a zone that you fly into and anyone's welcome to join the battle at any given time, assuming a match is going on of course. Although, the minimum level would have to be 77 because that's when you get the quest to learn how to fly in Northrend, or you could get a warlock to summon you up there earlier I guess.
arena points

As fun as Wintergrasp is at the moment this is a much needed change. Currently on the PVP server for Beta there's nothing but horde just dominating the zone. We'll see maybe a small group of alliance trickle in then just crush them and camp their graveyards as this post implies. There's nothing to stop us, and unfortunately if you want any of the added honor/arena points at the end of each round you need at least 1 Killing Blow. 1 Killing Blow gets you Rank 1 as well as allows you to build the first tier of catapults.

You need 10 kills to reach Rank 2, which allows you access to the better catapults that do actual siege damage to structures and walls. Not sure what you need for Rank 3 or beyond as I've yet to be in a match where I could accumulate more then 10 kills in one sitting.

There's two sides to each round, and whoever won the last round is now the defending champions so to speak.

Offensive - Their job is to breach the walls of the main structure in the middle and obtain the artifact that defense is protecting. In your way stands the other side alliance or horde, and they have access to gun turrets as well as various machines they can make on the inside by the help of the goblins and machine making buildings. On the outside lay various other posts where you can make more vehicles for yourselves and take over for your side. As it stands now, you have to fly into the zone and are immediately dismounted as you fly into the zone (so don't be flying to high up if you know you're going to pass this zone). To get out is even worse, because you're basically stuck on this ledge with no flight paths leading out, and the only way to get out of this place is to find a small outskirt where you can remount on your flying mount (currently you cannot use your flying mount in the zone itself, which is why it dismounts you as you're flying over).

Defensive - Your job is to crush the offensive and not allow them near the artifact that you're protecting. Failure to do so will end in a loss and you will then be fighting on the offensive side. If you succeed in defending your side will defend again until it fails to do so.

Ranks - As previously stated Rank 1 is achieved after one Killing Blow, Rank 2 after 10, and so on. However regardless of your rank at the end of the game, they will reset upon the start of the next match. So even if you managed to get Rank 5 during one fight, you will return to Rank 0 at the start of the next fight. Ranks allow you access to better vehicles. Eventually you may gain access to the flying vehicles.

Matches - Matches consist of 45 minute intervals with 30 minute intermissions. However if Offense reaches the artifact before the 45 minute timer is up, the game will end. So you can save yourselves a lot of time if you just make your way to the artifact.

Honor / Arena Points - If you are on the winning team when the match ends you will receive 7500 Honor Points, and 150 Arena Points. However this is also under the current rule that you need to get 1 Killing Blow before the match ends. In a zone filled with 20-40 Horde against 1-5 alliance it becomes very difficult to get your Killing Blow in before some one else snatches it from you, especially when the alliance won't rez due to being camped at the graveyards (can't say I blame them).
