BBC Looking for Input for Documentary

Is your Avatar more like 'you' than you are?

Are you making a lot of virtual money? And turning it into 'real' money?

Are you a typical online gamer, or do you break the geek-mould?

The BBC is making a new documentary about the meteoric rise of MMORPGs and other virtual worlds: featuring interviews with game designers, psychologists, economists and of course, gamers - which is where you come in...

We're looking for a wide range of gamers (
UK and US) to feature in the film - from teenagers to pensioners, newbies to guild leaders, and from addicts to part-timers.

We're particularly interested in hearing from you if:
  • You're passionate about your Avatar - whether it's just like you, or contrasts dramatically with your life offline
  • You make real money through your dealings in a game
  • You are worried about addiction - either for yourself, a friend, or a relative
  • You are organising a protest or event in a game
  • You regularly meet with other gamers in the outside world
If you're interested, please get in touch by emailing virtualworlds@bbc.co.uk.  We'll follow up with a phone call. The film will be broadcast in the UK early next year as part of the "Horizon" series.  For those based outside the UK who haven't heard of Horizon, it's the BBC's flagship science documentary series - please take a look at http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/horizon/index.shtml for details of our most recent films.

So let me get this right, seems more like a documenary to me, or am I just mis-intepeting the word "Film" as a movie...

no it wont be a film, it will be a documentary. The BBC say film meaning that it will be a stand alone programme. Horizon lasts about an hour btw i think and as sum1 said b4 its always a balanced programme so wont show us all as ppl with no lives.

It's a little late for 'the meteoric rise of MMORPGs and other virtual worlds'.

Nuuu, they're trying to invade our culture! It's like RL besieged D:. No really, it'll be interesting to see how this ends up, see if they end up mis-interpreting us as usual. Not alot I can do as i'm not from UK or the US :D.

Its the BBC, its also a documentary. It will show as many sides as possible within the hour. You can expect the owner of IGE to be in the programme talking about why RMT is so good for games, as well as a counter balance of anti-RMT.

You can expect several physchologists, who will lament the fact that some people are addicted to MMO's and are neglecting their RL to play them, but you will also have the counter balance of people who have a full and active social life.

The BBC will try their best not to portray MMORPG's in either a good, or bad light, they will just present balanced facts for and against, with a comment at the end by the presenter on how the BBC see the future of MMO's based on the contributions of the people in the show.

The BBC has an overseer if you will, if the BBC show a programme where there is a biased view, the overseer can slap them down and force them to air an apology, and naturally, after the show you can write into the BBC for their "right to reply" programme who's name eludes me.

I think it would be quite interesting. The fact that they are trying to talk to us actual gamers intrigues me by itself.

I'm 46 and have a horribly busy life at high level management of a large international airport. My son's 10. I bought WOW for him at christmas and one for myself the very next day when I discovered it. Now we game together (at least when we're able to play at the same hours). This is a great way to de-stress after a day in the office.
I look forward to the Horizon programme. Horizon's about as good as science programs can get !
