Rumors Swirl on EQ2

In the recent EQ newsletter, Sony put in a puzzle that led to two websites: www.nektulos.com and www.wailingcaves.com. (Congratulations to the gang at the safehouse for solving the riddle). Each site brings up an image and the Nektulos one mentions an announcement coming up in May. May is of course when E3 is held. This is the biggest gaming convention of the year, and game companies typically try to save their biggest announcements for the large group of press that comes to E3 each year. So what is Sony going to announce in May? It may be something like a single player game based upon Everquest, or the release of some new zones. However, do not be surprised if it is the launch of Everquest 2. I don't have any positive information on this and am really just speculating, but since they already announced the PS2 version of the game and the Planes of Power expansion, it seems logical that this is not related to either of them. Why make a teaser for something everyone already knows about? And they have never put this type of effort into announcing free content for the game. EQ2, however, would be a huge announcement. In addition, I have been told that the latest version of PC Gamer mentions EQ2 (I have not read it -- I'll try to track down a copy). Plus, Sony has had www.everquest2.com registered for quite a while. So the announcement Sony plans to make in May could well be that they are making EQ2. Or they could just be announcing another expansion or something related to the PS2 version of the game or even something completely unrelated to Everquest. We will be in Los Angeles for E3, so as soon as we find out more, we'll let you know. In the meantime, some of our visitors managed to piece together the murky pictures you see in the two sites.

I fully agree with you. I'd like to add this though. For those against twinking, odds are (this is just in general) you don't have a char over 30 or 40. If you did you would realize that you spent a hell of a lot of time and effort in that character and it was fun. But when you decide to try a new char, you don't wanna go through the tedium of those 1-20 lvls and thus you take some of the money or gear you have earned and give it to your new char. I say you've done your time once, you've earned the right to bypass it the next time. As for EQ 2. Bad idea! Fix EQ and add some of these new features (graphics especially) and add some of the content, i.e. the FP bit, over time and you'll make this game by far the best. Sadly I doubt SOE even reads these posts at all, and furthermore there's not much we can say to discourage their greedyness. Only way to do that is to speak in a tongue they know well, money. What I mean is don't buy EQ2 and they'll realize we don't want their new game, we want some of the features in it added to old EQ and if they have any brains they'll give in to the public.

I got a 50+ character and I'm still against twinking...

I don't mind if you get a few items to make those first few levels a bit easier...

but c'mon.. it used to be bronze or fine steel... now it's Kunark class specific armor!

Twinking isn't all that bad... it's just the few that over do it!

Think now, EQ 2 has an insane graphics that is like living in a dream world.... but make it a new game that is just a waste...

If they put all these profits to upgrade the existing EQ to the new graphics engine and like release a huge expansion. I grantee everyone will leave all the other online game to play EQ.

DO THEY EVEN HAVE A MARKITING SECTION IN SOE ???!!!!

these are my thoughts on the matter.
(BTW, i can't spell well so plz bear with me)

This is by far one of the dumbest things that Sony has done yet. Everyone knows that the goal in EQ is to build your characters up in lvls, get smack daddy gear, make friends, gain a reputation, bla bla bla. Well who in their right mind would throw away all of thier work to switch to EQ2, common Verant think here for once. Yes it is only a game but the things we work for (E.G. friends and your reputation are things that are not easy to get and are just as real as they are in RL) so why change to a new EQ? I know for a fact that is this new EQ 2 does come out i won't be able to upgrade it and would more than likly loose the friends i've made playing the current EQ. The players don't need a new EQ but rather we need the bugs that our currently in the game to be fixed as stated above. Yes some of these idea sound really cool, like FP falling to evil and the pallies running away to a temple of marr. These are some good ideas and that's great that Verant has new ideas for EQ but why the heck make a new game for them? Just fix the current bugs in the game and then add these events in over time so "we" the players get to experience them ourselves. When EQ first came out it was susposed to be a game were the players got to interacte with the game itself and change the course of history in Norrath. Now that is only possible by blowing 40 bucks a month to play on the rich boy server. How does Verant even expect any of us to play this EQ 2 with the required computer specs it want's? Almost all of the current players had to upgrade their compuers when Luclin came out and i don't think they want to do it again. So yeah, Sony may run into some trouble against competors in the future but making a new EQ is not the way to get the existing players to stay. They can think of other ways to improve EQ without totaly redoing it. Make random event happen like earthquakes or huricanes. To me this kinda sounds like a total rip off of other games. The new character creation setup is like the one in Anarchy online. The option to makes homes is just like UO. The character setup is great the way they have it now! Sure each class gets boring at times but they all have fun points. Who really wants to totaly start a new character and lvl it under differnet rules? The new zone idea is cool, adding more zones and beafing up lame ones like befallen but for god's sake don't get rid of any. Just add them to the existing EQ. If verant wants to tell the history of norrath, that's great. Some accual lore to the game would make it much more exciting. I mean when u get that sweet item from NTOV, don't u ever wonder how the hell it even got there? What they should do is open a rift betwen the current time line of EQ and the past so you could find out about past events and lost lore. The idea about the knowledge makes sense, doing away with twinking is great and all but this could easliy be added into EQ rather than making a new expansion for it. this may upset some players ut i think they would agree that it's a better trade off that a new EQ. what it all comes down to is the players. We are the ones who keep sony and EQ going so basicaly if sony wants to stay in business they have to please us. This EQ 2 would be sure to **** alot of people off and thus, casue Sony a great loss in the number of it's players. If this is for sure an EQ 2 they should have the players vote on weather they like the idea or not. If not "we" the players should boycott sony. If sony is making this new EQ 2 to stay ahead in the market then it will by no means help them if "we the players" don't play their new game. There's a saying in life, "If something isn'y broken than don't fix it." EQ is great the way it is now. Yes it does have a few bugs but all in all it's great as of now. EQ isn't broken and Sony needs to acknowledge this.

Again, these are just a few of my thoughs, so plz don't get angry.

There's a certain amount of allure for those of us who've gotten into the game within' the last year... I've worked VERY hard to get where I am, but I've known lvl 60's since I started. When I was lvl 1, they were lvl 60. As I worked my butt off levelling, they were still lvl 60 getting more, and more powerful. I'm now lvl 52, but, compared to any of these lvl 60's alts who are the same lvl as me, I am NOTHING. I can't afford the big equipment yet, and I'm constantly reminded of it everytime I look around. The opportunity to be in on the ground floor of something entirely new is VERY appealing. Not that I'm a power gamer or anything, I just think that there's been a lot I've missed, and there's still so much I haven't done. Now there just might be a countdown to get it done in... Anyway, you may agree with me, you may not, but here it is. Let the flames begin!

    # Apr 24 2002 at 12:34 AM Rating: Decent
I can understand your point, but I think you've missed something. Those lvl 60s are more powerful because of the simple fact that they have put in more time. They put in the time to get to 60 and from there all ya do is get gear. I felt as most do until I worked my main (druid) to 41 and suddenly I found myself making cash and friends which has outfitted myself and my alts to more than addequate levels and I can honestly tell anyone in this game, your power is reliant upon your time first and foremost. Making powerful friends helps too but time is big.

    # Apr 24 2002 at 3:03 AM Rating: Default
I definately agree with you, and, let me assure you, I've put a LOT of time in. I have the higher level friends, but I've never been twinked. Also, on many occasions, I have foregone loot and cash for XP to get to the levels where I could do these things. Having a weight limit also helps in that. My entire point is merely that, though I have so much time and effort in my current chars, it would be nice to be there at the beginning and level up with the rest of everyone else, rather than starting so far behind, and, conceivably, never cathing up.
    Current Expantions?

Ok so why did I buy Velious, Luclin, and gonna by Planes of Power if these are gonna be useless...this is the worst thing verant could do...dont fix something that isn't broke...just keep adding expantion packs...posibly add the housing and such in an expantion.

Couldn't agree with you more, Beastias. I only just recently baught Everquest, and all the expansions. This is a very stupid move by Verant.. the pinnacle of ignorance. If they knew anything about marketing, maybe they've heard "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Or in this case, rebuild it. Pointless. We're already happy with what we have, right? Half those features could be added into the EXISTING Everquest with zero conflict.
    RE: Current Expantions?
    # Apr 24 2002 at 12:03 AM Rating: Decent
I agree with both of you, when something is good, stick with it. They are raking in enough dough already, and the players like it, everyone is happy, so why change it? I cannot imagine their logic in this decision. Seems very stupid idea to me. They should update this EQ, Luclin was very sucessful as well, so if any graphic updates should be done, they should be done on the existing EQ. And the thought of MOBs chasing across zones is just scary, imagine... Lady Vox and Naggy in Misty Thicket heh.
    No way.
    # Apr 23 2002 at 11:26 PM Rating: Default
I'm not spending more money on another Everquest. Upgrade the existing game (which is obviously very possible as what we've seen them do with Luclin), or cancel my account. I'm not wasting more money after all this time. The idea of Everquest 2 obviously sounds nice, but all of us know that less then half of those listed features will actually make it into the full game. Don't get your hopes up, kids.
    RE: No way.
    # Apr 24 2002 at 12:29 AM Rating: Decent
That's a sad but nevertheless good point. Verant is infamous for their promises that go, for one ridiculous reason or another, unfulfilled. Luclin for example. Visible cloaks...nope too much work, never happened. Bazaar where u are the merchant...who knows why but again never happened. The list goes on so I say ***** EQ 2. Don't buy it and force them to add those features to EQ 1.
    My thoughts on the Subject
    # Apr 23 2002 at 11:23 PM Rating: Default
Alright, first of all I must admit that those screen pics ( if they are in all reality truthfully eq2 pics) are very impressive and would be very interesting to play in. I also like the aspects they are adding to increase difficulty level I.E. Mobs can zone...banks only hold what you put in them locally...mercenaries must be hired to guard caravans..etc... And some of the Lore changes are also interesting and could be fun, Dark elf Free port for example. But what I don't like, in fact i hate is the fact that, if this is in developement, they would avert any resources at ALL to eq2 when those funds could be SO well utilized in the original everquest...
Furthermore why would you get rid of Luclin, Kunark, and Velius?? I mean the majority of players spend there time there after level 30 and many LIVE in kunark & luclin b4 that.
Another thing that really pisses me off to no end is the fact that they continue to increase required specs, and my computer is reletive top of the line AMD 1900xp.. 1024mb RAM ...80gig hard drive...g4 ti4600.. but still its not fair to those who can't afford to upgrade!!! I guess its understandable, you must have better apperatus for a better game. But remember graphics alone do not make a game =)
My final point is that SOE seems to be losing more players every new feature they add, and they RUSH EVERYTHING!!!! what about our old characters?? all the work we put in, why not just update EQ 1, i have a level 35 on daoc, personaly i think where DAOC lacks and EQ reigns is in the Lore, EQ has much better Lore any day of the week. plus DAOC i beleive is way to easy =) some may not agree.
I will say the idea of the land ownership and house building is VERY enticing ))

    # Apr 23 2002 at 11:11 PM Rating: Decent
Even though I like EQ like it is, DAMN! This sounds like fun. Although it will require me to AGAIN replace my video card and upgrade RAM.

I wish they'd just upgrade EQ1 and quit trying to take all my money!

I say, the only way to get what we want (Upgraded EQ1, including bug fixes, better graphics, more quests, etc.) is to NOT express any desire for EQ2. Yeah, I'm tempted to jump all over it, but I'm having enough fun with the 1st game.

    Banks
    # Apr 23 2002 at 10:59 PM Rating: Default
The idea I like the least from what I have read so far is the localized banks. That is one of the best features of EQ and even DAoC that nobody ever thinks of as being a good thing. You are out of money? Hop to the closest bank and grab some. You forgot your resist gear in the bank accidently, and now you are halfway across the world? Np. Go to the closest bank and grab it. This part will be nothing but an annoyance.

I kind of like the idea of being able to own prperty, and build yourself a little house to live in. It makes the game a lot more realistic. Having to get your own boats, or carts to travel places. Yes it's going to end up being a lot less amazing than it is going to be cracked up to be, but that's expected. But SOE and VI need to first perfectify the original EQ, possibly take some polls, and ideas for the public and the players of the game, and see wha they think best for the general expansion of the game. Certains aspects of this EQ2 do sound interesting and fun, but not different enough to buy a whole new game for. It's just too close to the original EQ. Add some of these to the current game, make it the best possible, that's what they need to do.

Actually, I kinda like EQ the way it is now... yah you have to put up with all the annoying patches, bugged quests, horrible customer service, lag, and the pains of overall class development...

But I find that the game is best when I get to go to a new zone, explore, find mobs I've never seen before, kill things twice or ten times my size...

The game's excitement however is lost in the LFG boredom, the overdone twinking, and the seriousness that some players put into something that's supposed to be a game!

If anything, I'd like to see EQ2 come out, so most of the characters will move to something new... leaving some of the servers a little less crowded, I like EQ, and even at 51, there's still LOADS I haven't seen yet!
