Details on Current Known Issues (Jul. 21)

Since the implementation of the latest version update on Jul. 18, 2005, several gameplay and system related issues have been discovered. Solutions to these issues are now being tested. Players will be informed as soon as solutions are finalized. The following issues have been discovered: - An issue in official Ballista matches where auto-balance entries would result in unbalanced forces. *This issue has been addressed on Jul. 21, 2005 4:15(PDT) - An issue wherein mannequins do not pose as they are intended. - An item, "a spool of wool thread" that is necessary for synthesizing "Yagudo Headgear" has been found missing in the NPC dialogues. We apologize for the inconvenience.

No longer amused

Is anyone else having issues signing onto FFXI?

Okay, I was patient on the day of the update - change is good (especially if slows the gilsellers down <muah-hah-hah>). I was less patient the next day when I was unable to download the update and was never able to play (read a book, threw the frisbee for the dog...). Yesterday I was able to get on, finally, and had an awesome time (even while waiting in lines in Eldieme and Ghelsba to get my NPC - I'm sure everyone has some great stories and pictures from that adventure. ^_^ ) Today, however, I am no longer amused. I was so looking forward to signing on and taking part in the summer festival (and maybe even finding a good xp party to hang with?). So what's the scoop? Did I miss something? New update gone awry? More hackers? A glitch in the Matrix?

I have used a laptop since US release of FFXI with no problems til this update
Current Update on laptop
# Jul 21 2005 at 11:23 AM Rating: Decent
I downloaded the update to my laptop, after it was done the laptop crashed after 45 seconds of a black screen. tried to reboot and it would not.
Took to tech specialist - He said it has a virus called bloodhound which was traced to FFXI update download- only thing downloaded that day by the logs - The tech is still trying to save the laptop but the virus may have corrupted too much - which means that i may have to reinstall windows as well as all FFXI and updates - unfortunately I have a problem with that as in all my FFXI info is saved in a file on the laptop cuz I put it there when we evacuated for Hurricane Ivan Last year. So I may not be on for awhile :(

Take care and I will help those I have promised help to as soon as I get back up and running.

My virus software detected a virus in one of the .dat rom files of the update in the middle of the download process. I called Playonline to inquire about it and they told me to update the virus definitions. (I use Avast for those who are curious) I told them it had automatically updated them earlier this morning. (I was not lying either)
Then they told me to turn off my virus software. This doesnt sound like an intelligent move. So i hung up and tried their chat service for dealing with tech support issues.
the Virus my software located was called uruguay 6/7/8

The conversation proceeds as follows: (I replaced my name with kotoro before pasting this here)

You have been connected to FFXI TSR Jon.
Kotoro: hi
FFXI TSR Jon: Hello, Kotoro, thank you for contacting the PlayOnline Information Center. Just a few moments while I review your question, please.
FFXI TSR Jon: There is NO virus in the update...and NOBODY has ever been infected through POL.
Kotoro: http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/news/sdetail5915.html?story=5915 use your browser to find the word virus on this page and read the post, humor me if you will
Kotoro: i'm doing a scan after the update installs to make sure nothing bad has been downloaded
Kotoro: but i want to make sure someone in tech support knows about this
FFXI TSR Jon: Dont care what anyone says on Allakhazam
FFXI TSR Jon: It snot true
FFXI TSR Jon: Are there any other issues I can assist you with right now, Kotoro?
Kotoro: any idea why my software found a virus on the 138th file?
FFXI TSR Jon: It didnt....
FFXI TSR Jon: there is nothing to find
Kotoro: why did it THINK it found one
FFXI TSR Jon: Maybe you need to shut off your 3rd party software chewats
FFXI TSR Jon: cheats
Kotoro: i dont have cheat
Kotoro: its avast virus software
FFXI TSR Jon: well then it would have found nothing
FFXI TSR Jon: Never heard of it.
Kotoro: i dont want to sound belligerent
FFXI TSR Jon: it should be off anyways...whenever your running the game
Kotoro: just wanted to let you know the on access scanenr picked something up
Kotoro: i'll do another scan now that it updated to make sure itwasnt a mistake
FFXI TSR Jon: OK...maybe its the software...or the PC...
Kotoro: iit was in the playonline roms folder and it occurred during hte update
FFXI TSR Jon: Im not going to discuss this topic any further....Bottom line...THERE IS NO VIRUS IN ANY UPDATE....anythiung else I can help you with?
Kotoro: so i coudlnt determine for sure why it was picking something up without contacting support
Kotoro: thank you
FFXI TSR Jon: Bye.
Your session has ended. You may now close this window.

As you can clearly see he did not take me seriously from the beginning. Apparently he dislikes your website enough to assume my mentioning it was enough to discredit anything i said. Claiming i was using a cheat program infuriated me. This is an example of the kind of people Square Enix allows to speak to their customers. As a customer service rep you cannot lose your temper. My boss would have fired me for speaking to a customer like this.

They forgot the part where they don't describe the details of weapons in regards to distance with the ranger nerf.

(The ninja one doesn't seem that bad really)

i run on an oldschool laptop.
16mb ram for the win..
needless to say
im running 1024x768 overlay (reading text in the 640x860 is impossible when desktop res is 1024x768), and background of 256x256, ugly as hell, but hey, i can still play. =)

I too am having trouble just getting past the Playonline Version check just to log into Playonline. I was able to do it once and then couldn't get past the Version check for the game. Is this a common issue??

Yes, this is a problem I experienced as well. After a few tries I read what Play Online had to say about it. They said if you get this error you should wait a bit and try again later. I believe this error is due to all the congestion with everyone trying to download it. In fact, even after I downloaded both updates (for Play Online and FFXI) I still had trouble getting back on after I logged off. Hopefully by now you shouldn't have any troulbe. =)
Mobility Radeon + etc.

Having same issues as others on this thread... 2X Dell C640's heavily upgraded with 32mb Radeon Mobility 7500, never had an issue, suddenly spontaneous crashes with 2d at 1024 and 3d at 1024... dropping 3d to 512 solved this, but looks horrid.
My Sony U70p running an 64mb shared vram intel chipset is experiencing none of this.

I play on a Pavilion ZE4400 that is going on 2 years old. My video card is a Radeon IGP 320M with 64MB of Memory.

I was having a hellva lot of problems with my computer after the last updated.

I decided to just see if there was a new Direct X updated.

If you go under RUN on your start bar, and run dxdiag, it will lauch a pop menu. If you check the system tag, it will tell you what version of Direct X you are running. If you aren't running
Direct X 9.0c then you aren't running the most current version. You may want to try that.

I have a laptop running this game and it works fine for me. I have a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700. I have a few roomates that play this game as well. There 3 other laptops that this game is running on in my house and none of them are having any trouble so far. Perhaps it's just your specific card?

i used laptop also, i had problem that screen went black out and game crashed. I tried a few times, eventually, I have to lower the game display resolution to 512X512 and the background display to 800X600. it's ugly... but i can live with that tho.
I hope that would help yours.

I have a Mobility Radeon 7500 built-in to my laptop, yes it only has 16MB but I've been using it for the last year with no problems at 512x512. Now thanks to this mandatory update, it's screwed the video card compatibility. This is one update, we could have done without!

Mine does.. can't get into the game more than a minute or so without it saying error occurred with the Playonline. Never had a problem before with my laptop getting into FFXI.. its a Dell Latitude 610 I believe, got a gig of RAM too.. but I'm not sure what video card it uses, but when I get into the game I can see everything.. but then a crash :/

hmm... sounds exactly like mine.
Logging in perfectly fine...see my char...the minute I start walking and such....loses full screen with an error message popping up saying Playonline had an error.

I think mine is an ATI Radeon 7500...with only 16mb video ram, like the one the guy above mentioned.
