A Word on Abusing Exploits

This is from Square-Enix: We have confirmed an issue wherein it was possible for players to acquire gil freely from within FINAL FANTASY XI. This issue has already been addressed by our technical staff. Players found to be exploiting this method will be dealt an appropriate punishment, which may include PlayOnline account cancellation. Though you may be curious, please remember that exploiting flaws in the game is not something we can tolerate. We develop our software carefully so that such issues do not occur. However, should you come across an aspect of the game that may be not working as intended, please contact a Gamemaster or use the appropriate mail form to notify us. It would help us tremendously if you can describe the situation and the steps you took in discovering any such flaws. However, it is not necessary to report the names of any players you suspect to be abusing any of the above mentioned issues for their benefit. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

On the garuda server. I see many people in the same area for months. They all have practically the same gear. And i've heard from LS members that I think IGE equips their botters with full raptor/lizard. and they are all dragoons. The guy attacks anything and doesn't reply when you speak to him. He pissed me off, so I followed him around and stole his mobs for fun. I wanted to become a threat to IGE for their gil selling. Because the economy is terrible. Also, in beadueax i came a across a PLD named Krice, who is chinese. Ever since that day (1.5 months ago) I see her farming oozes nonstop. And her gear never changed. I suspect that person working for a company as well. I hope SE does something about these losers, I hate them with a passion...

OH i know this for a fact, i speak english and chinese, on my server, practically evertyone killin oozes is makin money for sum organization and are chinese. I have talked to them before, they even admitted to me that they are being paid by some person to make gil, i dont know all the details but that is just.. stupid! They dont usually camp nms though... and.. they have multiple people playing on their characters so they are on 24/7, sometimes they play more than one character at a time, i know this, cuz i used to be friends with them, but not anymore cuz its just stupid to be friends with cheaters, im thinking of reporting them but.. i dont know. should i?

I never realized how much gil farming effected Vanadiel's economy. Being reletively new here I can remember when you could get a potion for 100 gil. But I wonder why SE hasn't done much to get rid of the farmers. It should be obvious who they are. If you see millions of gil being sent by one character, doesn't that seem strange? And what about these sites like cannotlinkto who don't hide the fact that they sell gil for RL $? It should be simple for SE to shut them down, since the site is underminding the stability of their game. Take down IGE, and that'll help big time.

What are you thinking?
Don't address the issue! Just be aware of the problem and monitor it like a hawk. Then ban each and every one of the people that uses it. =)

Addressing the issue just makes them look for a new hole in your programming (and with a game weighing in around 9 gigs now, there's going to be a few).

Well, for one thing, if you're talking about "Camping" some NMs so you can sell their drops for cash....could that not be interpreted as "unfair" by those that actually want the drop for their character? Just a thought....

Economic issues
# Sep 29 2004 at 4:24 PM Rating: Default
I have been noticing a lot of talk on our LS lately about the ZOE's (among others). The rumor was that they were selling gil and this gil was flooding the economy. What seemed to be also an issue, is that as the items in the AH become so expensive that normal players can't afford it so they are turning to Gil sellers.

I have never baught gil or manipulated the system but I have had troubles since my first day logging in to be able to afford items (what happened to 100gil potions of the past?) Also, the chocobo prices in Jeuno and at the crags is outragious most of the time, so I spend more time running between cities than fighting and making gil =p kinda circular....

Anyway, so I asked a Zoe, who happened to be a Chinese player who spoke no English (I love dictionaries) what they were really up to. Some of them are actually sold accounts and some of them are selling gil via credit card. So the gil farmers, are usually these characters (who sometimes are botted btw) and yes, they are taking over some areas and camping the best nms. Annyoing huh?

So there, this whole string of posts now interconnects. Personally, I want to see it illegal to sell gil on the server. I would like to see the bots destoryed and I want to know why there are PC's in the game who never move! I've been playing for months and I always see the same people in the same place, having never moved, every day. That's frustraiting.

So here's the basic point. SE is being abused by gil sellers who are also messing up the PC characters. Solution option: Make quests more rewarding so that gil is a little easier to make. This way, players won't need to worry about buying gil and can go back to enjoying their gaming experience. This would solve the issue, the secret is keeping the AH people from raising their prices again? Can we call for a freeze in AH prices? Until this issue is solved? Could be good ^^. Also, these items, like hmmm.... jumping boots, maybe they should have a signature on them? So when you win them legally, your signature is added to them. If someone who doops the item goes to sell it in the AH the AH will reject it. These signatures never go away so you can always tell if the item is legit. No one is going to buy a dooped item if they know they can not sell it again, and who would buy it for the outragious price out of a bazzar?

Just food for thought ^^
Wingchild is right.

Yup, for those who don't know it, most of what you think was an "exploit" is really, fairly legal in the game.

What SE changed was a bug, where you could duplicate your items, plain and simple. BTW, I never used it for fear of getting caught. Basically, you could dupe Monster Signa, etc. Then, sell it around. This will probably make the prices on some of the really costly items go up, up, up!!! ><

Thanks for reading this. Oh, and stop thinking it's some other bug, ok?
exploits and exploits
# Sep 29 2004 at 3:44 PM Rating: Decent
They need to add another intentional 'exploit' where you take items from a merchant, synth it, and the result can be sold back for a profit to the merchant.

It would Still require crystals, but geez, would it hurt anyone to have crafting at some point actually make gil ?!?

I mean come on ! this is allowed in real life (called...'manufacturing'). Are the merchants buying all the finished products from outsourced factories run by beastmen ?!?
RE: exploits and exploits
# Sep 29 2004 at 8:14 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, but in real life, the merchants don't create their own money to add into the economy. In FFXI, on the other hand, whenever you sell an item, FFXI CREATES the gil and that's more money into the economy. also, the crystals go to the other players, so you're removing some money, giving other players money, then ADDING EVEN MORE! if they put this in, everyone would craft, the crystal prices would inflate ridiculously, and there would be so much gil floating around that NPCs would probably begin to be cheaper than the AH for high level armor!

I agree that exploiting that wasn't a great idea, but what about those people who got banned because they got curious and only did it once? I think they should of gotten their duplicates taken and still allowed on the game. The people who REALLY exploited it for all it was worth should be banned.

I've seen and hears a few botting problems on shiva, but nothing too serious... my main complaint is the AH prices... but that's just people's greed. I was starting out and when i hit RDM lv 3 i went to buy cure... i started looking inteh other shops, adn lo and behold i found it for 70 gil, where it was 300 in the AH.

If you want an item that's in teh AH adn you can't afford it, shop around... maybe some NPC has it for sale at a somewhat reasonable price...

The other thing to do is get people on your server to suck in their belts and sell their stuff on the AH for lower prices... if you can get the majority of people selling for like half what the current rates are, the prices will drop. of course, that will that a lot of organization.

Bots can't be helped. if peopel are botting, then aside from telling a GM, there's really nothign you can do about it. I love the game, and i hate to see it got to crap because of the people that want to make real money off of a game. just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should.

anyway, that's my 2 gil... ^_^

I hate to say it but, you're right. It's sad too see how we have become, but the bots are no different. They are just on a grander scale. Bots are people's actual greed, farming gil and rare items to sell to us, actual people.

For hundreds of dollars, too. Sounds insane, yet you managed to avoid it, completely. You should check out some of these sites and the outrageous prices they are charging.

shh! Some of us make money this way :P

I know, its pretty stupid how some items sell way cheaper on NPC Shops than they do on Auction House. Some of the items I've seen in AH, are in a shop less 20 steps away for 1/5 the price. Such as Red Roses which sell for 80 gil at a Shop, while selling at 500 to 1000 gil on AH.

i agree, anyone that is mad about exploits being taken away or destroyed have just had their main income destroyed. I am glad they found this, im tired of people cheating, play the game to play it. Its just wasted talent if you try to be the strongest or richest in a video game.
#Anonymous, Posted: Sep 29 2004 at 2:10 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) ALl of you people who are complaining about (a) exploits; (b) bots; (c) everything else; are most likely just pissed off because someone did something and you didn't. Kind of like cheat codes. You always want to be the one doing them, but never invent them in time. Cheats and exploits are abad thing, point blank. Realistically..running around the game with a lvl 75 accross the board character without secondary class restrictions would make this a moot game yes? or being able to kill a mob and get 10 million gold per kill, etc. (1) it would dramaticlaly unbalance the game, causing crashes, deleted accounts, and game damage. (2) it would scare off the people who play this for fun.
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 29 2004 at 2:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Wow you are an idiot. Bots don't hurt the game!???? What the hell are you talking about. Lets start with a history lesson. Germany just after WW1, printed lots and lots of money. The economy went crazy and you had to pay like 100$ for a loaf of bread. Now everyone doesnt have that 100$, only the ones that got the printed money. You see. So these bots are bring massive amounts of stuff into the economy, getting alot of money. Prices go up and its chaos. The blame is to be placed on the botters you see. Kinda like the Germans blaming, well you know, but they didn't really do it, botters did. You should wake up to reality, the real world.
RE: Wake up to reality
# Sep 29 2004 at 3:54 PM Rating: Excellent
History lesson huh? That's cute. Why don't you finish the story and not just use cheap examples for your own gain. The reason Germany did that was because of the war debts they had to pay to the rest of the world for their stupidity during WWI. Then when they stopped printing money and jacking up their economy then they caused a worldwide debt which ultimately lead into WWII. Don't believe me? I figured as much, go back and look. Germany was paying war debts to Africa and the rest of Europe who was in turn sending raw materials over to the US for production. Then the US would send those manufactured goods to Great Britain and our allies in Europe to help with their lack of goods following WWI.
Now, I was relating to MY personal experiences in other games. If this is your first MMORPG then don't criticize someone for their experience, learn from them. I have never botted before either, but I don't think it is a bad or good thing. Purely based on your perception of the event. Hacks, cheats, bug exploits...those things I detest. Such as the current Mog House hack that some people use allowing them to color their mog anyway they want. It is relatively harmless, but it shows that this game is not invulnerable to hacks. No online game is.
And for the last time...Why don't ya'll stop harrassing the Japanese players? There is enough hate in the world without allowing it to flood over into this game...it is..JUST A GAME. I have played with many Japanese players who are cool as hell. Don't be a bigot just because this game was released over there first, allowing them more time to build themselves up. Check the records...How many Final Fantasy games have been released in the US, or any game period compared to the number in Japan? There's a sobering thought. Japan was on Final Fantasy 8 by the time we were playing Final Fantasy 2 or 3, they had the Famicom remember?
I appreciate the idiot comments by the way, that was SO inspiring. Pretty funny how I'm the idiot, when ya'll are too narrow minded to see the real world.

A lot a people are complaining about the bots, but it also seems like a lot of people are defending the bots. We know they are not glitches, but what exactly is a glitch? SE uses the word, "exploit". I think these bots and gilfarmers are definately exploiting the system/server/players, whatever you want to call it. I don't see it as fair that SE takes their sweet time to try and find these bots, mostly, without success; and then have the nerve to cancel/suspend accounts for "loyal players" that are just trying to get a head, even if it was by a glitch. I agree with a lot of people that it is getting ever more and more difficult to try and get ahead. Even the legal ways of getting ahead are all overcrowded and overcamped with bots, gilfarmers and loyal players. While you start seeing less and less loyal players, you start see the same bots over and over again. SE has done nothing effective to help us out. SE has managed to only one thing, tell us what we can't do. Where's the customer support, SE?

A normal player has absolutely no reason to be mad by this. I don't do anything illegal, so I know my tail is safe.

Wingchild has a link in his post that describes the issue. It has to do with duplicating items/gil so that you illegally have more of that item than you are suppose to have. It's not about casinos or buying stuff from guilds and selling for more. This is a glitch that people used to make tons of gil and copies of expensive items to sell.

How in the world did get that from their announcement? o_O

The casinos is NOT an exploit of the game programming, it's an exploit on people's gullibility. SE cannot and will not enforce moral rules on the games dynamics and how people interact with each other.

To the rest of the folks who have issues understanding an announcement made by SE:

Step 1: Please read the entire announcement
Step 2: Think about it.
Step 3: Read it again.
Step 4: Step away for a few moments.
Step 5: Come back read it again
Step 6: Interpret it.
Step 7: If you still have questions repeat steps 1-6 at least three more times. If then you reach step 7 again please feel free to ask questions.

After reading some of the comments here I don't know if I should be shocked or just amazed on the shear lack of comprehension. Are people like this in the real world? I can't even imagine what you would do if your boss handed you a memo saying that you have to turn off your computer each day, only to interpret it as, "OMFGBBQ!1!! THE INTERNET IS GOING TO BLOW UP" (-_-)

This lack of understanding reeks of SE announcement to allow people to move to the new servers, and still had people read it as, "WOO HOO I CAN CHOOSE WHAT SERVER I CAN GO TO, NOW I CAN BE WITH MY FRIENDS ON X SERVER!"

Frankly, i don't think there is really a problem with someone buying something from a guild and selling it back for money. Blame SE if thats the case. Just like in real life, if someone finds something cheaper than they could sell it for, thats okay. I have no idea what this thing adresses but if it has to do with buying and selling according to pre-set prices, it is definitely not the players fault.
Well...

First off, Thank You SE for realizing that there are some nasty people out there who abuse the game in order to (in some cases) make real-life money and/or cut out some of the work that the rest of us decent players have to do in order to get the good equipment/scrolls/items.

People who look for and/or exploit flaws like this make me sick. It's a game for goodness sakes, and cheating makes the game less fun for everyone.

My additional 2 gil, you ask? I'm not going to go through a premeditated lengthy process to obtain money illegaly, but I'd be happy if after a server or game update I suddenly find myself with a couple more gil in my mog house! Until that unlikely day, I'm gonna farm the old-fashioned way... or fish... or whatever. XD

I would assume that they could tell if was accidental or intentional. If you duplicated say a stack of Lizard Tails by accident it wouldn't look like you were trying to hack it (not like that's get you much gil). Just send a message to a GM letting them know just to cover your butt. However if all of a sudden you have 2 of a 1mil gil item, it would look a little suspicious.

"I swear mister GM... I didn't make 15 pairs of leaping boots on purpose, it was an accident" :)
