Rumors Swirl on EQ2

In the recent EQ newsletter, Sony put in a puzzle that led to two websites: www.nektulos.com and www.wailingcaves.com. (Congratulations to the gang at the safehouse for solving the riddle). Each site brings up an image and the Nektulos one mentions an announcement coming up in May. May is of course when E3 is held. This is the biggest gaming convention of the year, and game companies typically try to save their biggest announcements for the large group of press that comes to E3 each year. So what is Sony going to announce in May? It may be something like a single player game based upon Everquest, or the release of some new zones. However, do not be surprised if it is the launch of Everquest 2. I don't have any positive information on this and am really just speculating, but since they already announced the PS2 version of the game and the Planes of Power expansion, it seems logical that this is not related to either of them. Why make a teaser for something everyone already knows about? And they have never put this type of effort into announcing free content for the game. EQ2, however, would be a huge announcement. In addition, I have been told that the latest version of PC Gamer mentions EQ2 (I have not read it -- I'll try to track down a copy). Plus, Sony has had www.everquest2.com registered for quite a while. So the announcement Sony plans to make in May could well be that they are making EQ2. Or they could just be announcing another expansion or something related to the PS2 version of the game or even something completely unrelated to Everquest. We will be in Los Angeles for E3, so as soon as we find out more, we'll let you know. In the meantime, some of our visitors managed to piece together the murky pictures you see in the two sites.

    Problems I can see
    # Apr 24 2002 at 8:24 AM Rating: Decent
It all sounds great yes, but i can already see afew problems with this, one, the system requirements, man, my computer would die trying to play this game, and having to get a new one is well, scaring me. Two, starting over, again, while in Eq this can be made easier by twinking, if you already have a high lvl in this game there "is" no twinking, can u imagine having to get from lvl 1 too 60 in EQ cold turkey, no twinking, not even getting as nice item from some passerby, sounds daunting to me. Three, call me a simpleton, but Eq is already a very complex game, I would fell adding to its complexity might maybe (stressing the maybe) make it a little more inaccesible to newer players, when i started a caster i had trouble figuring out how to Scribe spells (yes, theirs an instruction book/tutoriol, but who wants to go through that ;)
Ofcourse, I can also see a price hike coming with this expansion, and imagine all the problems you have with EQ now, tenfold, in EQ2, and weapons breaking? Help, just lost my singing short sword (cynical). I for one think i would wait to see it come out, then get hyped up, ofcourse, it wont be coming out fer another three years so why am i writing about it (/ponders) oh well, thats my 2 cp.

Hmmm, This is very interesting. Unfortunately this doesnt seem like EQ2.....WHERES THE QUESTS!!!!! The preview says nothing about questing, and IMHO this seems more like
Ever-lets-build-a-house-and-haul-all-our-stuff-around-with-us. The graphics upgrades and less zoning time would be a wonderful addition, but good graphics dont make a good game. I think the ability for monsters to zone along with you is a great idea, but what happens when someone trains a bunch of lvl 40 monsters to town? Can we say massive newb killing???? And as for hiring PCs to protect your caravan from wandering baddies..... well as I have seen many times in the current EQ many people will not help you for a period of time. They might buff you or do a one time heal, but I find that unless they have a reason to help you (like MASSIVE plat for it) they will just go off and do something better. I was then reading the part that said dying will become less onerous.....but then it said youd respawn with your equip minus 1-2 items!!!!! Whats with that..how will you decide what items. Knowing VI they will obviously be your best items. Why not just lose a percentage of your money wether its in the bank or on your person. As for the loss of Kunark, Velious, and Luclin- You better add creatures able to rival those that youd be losing from those continents. Anyway thats just my 2 cp 8)

Some people have a hard time letting go of what they are comfortable with ..i.e. afraid of change. I for one will definitely play EQ2 i came into EQ about 2 years after it was started and it really is not fun because the game has lost it's sense of role play..people are more interested in being part of a high profile guild and getting there lower level characters equiped with items that their higher level characters have acquired and to top it off any new players to the game get shot down and drug behind the "band Wagon" because they are "newbies" . Oh well . Sony/Verant will produce this game because they see how much profit is coming from virtual role play. I and many others will buy this game and enjoy it , there will not be people to look down upon the new players for we all will be new players . there will be no "Twinking" what you give is what you get . These people who make negative comments are the ones who are pessimistic and who are always ******** and moaning in EQ1 they make the game no fun . my synopsis is if you like the game you are playing shut up and enjoy it! if you want to complain about the creators of the game that you have chosen to spend you're money on then STOP paying to play it . It is that simple.

Sounds extremely interesting but OMG what alot of getting used to...I do however love the idea of communities, I imagine guild's will have their own communities and when you get married on EQ you get a house together...I like alot of the new stuff, some things do seem rather scarey such as localized banks and the new character development but i suspect in time it will reveal itself to be way better than the old EQ, can't wait to see it...and not a bit worried that i won't like it

I say this sounds like a really interesting game. Its not EQ I, its a completely new game, set in the world of EQ. What i missed in DAOC was the history of places, the theme dungeons etc.
I actually thought allready that a DAOC system set in EQ with upgraded Graphics would make me one happy MMORPGer

    And to the whiners, i say this;
all u who whine about housing, not being able to twink, not being able to transfer chars, having to camp same stuff over again etc.. ; relax.

1 - "Things brake and i have to recamp my uber sword over and over again..." do we know if things actually do get "camped"? Are you so stuck in the farming tracks so you actually believe stuff can be and will be gained that way? I dont know the difference, but im convinced that Verant knows that the campathlon this game turned into today isnt all that good

2 - Twinking; noob quests with actually good items. Thats twinking build in! Doing noob quests makes ppl learn their chars, and the game system. Twinking does not.

3 - Transfer chars; wtf... a complete new world to explore, from lvl 1 to 100, and you want to bring in a lvl 60 char from day one? Dont you actually think that will ruin alot of the experience? If you dont want to explore, stay in EQ I

4 - Housing; Yes, housing went bad in UO. UO sucked due to all houses. Im not 100% sure, but i GUESS that Verant KNOWS this. And i also GUESS that Verant wont do that same misstake. Dont you think getting a house with your guild, saving for it, building stuff etc would be part of a community/guild? Id say thats one huge achievemnt, to have own colors and a place to hang

I would wait and see the finished product before i bring out the whine and cheese

Verant, this is absurd. Forget EQ2, I am not buying and I'm quitting EQ, so this better be a rumor. Why don't you stop trying to drain us for money. My goodness, you started by making us by a 30 dollar game and charging us 10 bucks a month. Now, you make us by 3 other expansions and pay 13 bucks a month. Guess what, we still don't complain. But now you are going to make us buy a whole new game, make us start over, and making half the people leave EQ so it's no fun anymore... ToV raid, wow we have 9 people this time!! Don't even get me started on the Stormhammer server, aka another way to drain money from us. Take the money spent on new game and improve regular EQ. GT when you decide to help us....

    # Apr 24 2002 at 8:48 AM Rating: Default
First of all this is all speculation.
Second no one is forcing you to buy any of the expansions or continue to keep paying subscription fees. If it bothers ya so much then just give the game up and go play your PlayStation which costs more per cartridge and ya get bored with much sooner.
    ...right

    watch for a release near 2005, x-mas 2004

With a significant shift in system requirements too, (its the posted system reqs) that have me throwing the BS flag.

whatever. Shadowsbane and Neverwinter Nights are out long before we all commit to allowing V to experiment on us again. Most will not be there.

    # Apr 24 2002 at 7:48 AM Rating: Default
Verant should stop trying to suck more money out of players and just sort out what they have got first. EQ2 is most likely to be very expensive (i know i for one wont pay any more than i already am) and this could cause many players to desert eq1 (and not move to eq2) They are likely to charge a mint and the game will be so full of bugs that the few that do move to eq2 will most likely get annoyed and leave.
My conclusion? EQ2 will flop, leaving verant increasing prices to try and make up for lost profits
    DAoC
    # Apr 24 2002 at 7:32 AM Rating: Default
Can you say, Copy cat. That is what they are doing for the most part. I noticed it in their past patches, but this has gone to the limit. Hey, Verant, Do you have an original idea? I recently went to DAoC to check it out and could not beleive that the changes EQ has been making where in fact things that DAoC had already been doing. In their EQ2 they take it a bit further and it does look interesting, but I for one am tired of givng them my money. People have a lot of time in this game and their characters. EQ2 sounds rediculous and does nothing more then to make you feel like you have wasted your time on EQ1. Why even have an EQ2. Just come out with a new game all together. Verant is lazy, take a game and revamp it and sell it as a whole new game. I see now that the Programers are just as lazy as the tech support at Verant. I am done rambling now.
    too much time
    # Apr 24 2002 at 7:29 AM Rating: Default
My problem is clear. I buy a game and i spend my time to play and to lvl my charac. I could not pay to play for a dying game.

I could understand that Sony and Verant do an another game. But, they might commercialize 2 games with nearly the same world. Buyer could not understand. They have to be clear or i think that many player stop EQ (and they do not move to EQ2).

I think this is great news. If it does come out, I will probably cancel EQ1 and start EQ2. This is of course if they keep the same fees. Otherwise I will just keep playing in the EQ1 world.
I may quit EQ if this happens
    # Apr 24 2002 at 7:18 AM Rating: Decent
Well, the system specs I can deal with. The explaining away Velius, Kunark and Luclin is just sad.

I quit playing Magic the Gathering as it became more and more of a time and money sink to merely keep up with new card sets and I was not be able to play ones I'd bought only a few months before.
If VI start doing the same, I will quit EQ.

Sounds like bull**** to me , sounds like they want the lvl 60's to put out some more money so they can waste their lives some more. They should just let it go and raise the lvls up to 65 or 70 not having to start a whole new game (and it sounds ******). Can the idea Verant just work on your Main Game you idiots! Theyll be probably outrageous prices too .. They may find out that alot of people wont leave eq1. I know i wont go starting another char on eq 2 and blowing 2 to 3 years more of my life. My family needs me involved in rl. lol Verant i like eq but you guys are greedy ******** **** you

Hail and /bow to all the rich people out there that will be playing eq2 because i know i will have the ability to avoid this fiasco, due to lack of wanting to fork out so much money to play a game to be yet released. (upgrades being the hard part and i would imagine the rates will be insane due to the fact Verant realizes they have a good thing going). If it works don't fix it :-)

    houses!
    # Apr 24 2002 at 6:59 AM Rating: Default
actually housing killed UO simply because there was no more wilderness after that.
UO world was too small for the number of people as it was and when houses came out it just finished off the game.
the EQ2 world has to be very large becuase frankly sometimes listening to people makes matters worse.
if you ask everyone shall we have houses all will cry yes!but once it turns against them it will same people that will rebel.
solution for housing A) very very very large wilderness B)housing zones that are only that no mobs no wilderness c) just forget housing.eq never had housing horses and we loved it.

Speculation is for the stock market. If this supposed new product (which we're still not sure exists yet) is REALLY so much better than what we have, then it may be worth talking about -- when I have the product in my home and am using it. Everything else is just a bunch of talk -- has it gotten so bad for EQholics that they have to talk about the game every waking hour they're not playing? Get some perspective. Yes, I play, but if Verant goes too far I'll be gone tomorrow. It's a game.

well eq2 is not eq so hope no char transfer.but the ideas are so a hybrid of DAoC and AC and some UO.
please sony lets have some fresh ideas or at least bring back some of the stuff that made EQ a great game once.
i certainly will not pay for the ideas above because they are not well thought out just DAoC/AC/UO .
i still wait for that elusive game that was fun as UO was in its first year or EQ was up till kunark.
a fresh idea is needed and this is not it.sad,i expected EQ2 to have a fresh approach as UO2 was hoping to have before it got scraped.
    RE: sad
    # Apr 24 2002 at 8:02 AM Rating: Default
What do u mean eg2 is not eq??? Its is precisely the same game with a lot of new fetures(and some removed). Of course they should have character transfer between the games. I would be freakin upset if i spent a year on a char that is worhless because everyone else is playin the new game!!

If this is Sonys idea then they will defacto make eq a useless game.

HOW ABOUT MAKIN SOME GOOD CHANGES WITH EQ INSTEAD??? A game that a lot of people have pu a lot of time into.

    ....im angry, sorry.

    Old EQ
    # Apr 24 2002 at 6:50 AM Rating: Default
The only problem I have with EQ2 is that I am going to miss the old EQ, the old world, the old hang outs. I didn't even like when they altered the world graphics with luclin in the original world. If EQ2 kept the same 'original' world, altered it a bit, and had just more different areas, that would be fine. But, then again, that is just what the expansions are. If they need to up the graphics and the game engine, I say fine, but try and keep the 'old' world the same.

about 2 years ago. A comapany was formed by a couple of people. there mission. to out do EQ, UO on maken the best MMORPG.

Horizons. had some of the BEST ideas and hottest debates that ran from economic systems. character development. Character portral. and world views.

anyone who has followed this.. has seen SONY carbon copy there ideas into EQ.. and hense.. why there website no longer shows any information about Impires of Istaria.

they devoloped a NEW 3d engein (for those that dont know.. this is a very tiedious thing)

try rewrighting your old encylopedia.. by hand. and that would take you close to it.

    They generated the AA system.

Everything mentioned above. i hope is speculation.

If sony releases a game that is so like Horizons as sugjested. they wont care about us as the players. Horizons asked everyone for the imput. they are the CSR stand at the desk asking "how can i help you".. and not "WHAT CHA WANT NOW"(eq)
they are just stealing the ideas of a smaller company that had to take a brake to get funding.

Hmmm, Never heard of this Company More info Plz. Like if it is so good Why havent i heard of this company I have heard more about NeverWinterNights than this not to mention a rumor about another ORPG game coming in this year from across the Pacific.
    RE: HORIZONS
    # Apr 25 2002 at 9:53 AM Rating: Decent
Horizons is undergoing a bit of a revamp right now, partly do to other companies snatching their ideas and partly because they realized that trying to put ALL their original ideas into the game would have been near impossible. They're still leaking tiny tidbits of info to the public, but no more eye candy as of yet. There is a rumour that AE might be giving some new info at the E3 Expo to only a couple of magazines (closed door stuff not an open booth) You can catch up on interviews with the company techs and bigwigs on http://horizonsvault.ign.com. They also have all the old game info and eyecandy archived that you can peruse. Needless to say, I don't care how cool EQ2 is, if Horizons comes out first (and it IS supposed to be out in 2003) then Verant will see my account suddenly dropped. Horizons looks far more RP friendly and less quakehead friendly.
    RE: HORIZONS
    # Apr 24 2002 at 8:06 AM Rating: Decent
I've heard of it, so have a lot of people (on Tunare anyway). the current website is www.artifact-entertainment.com/horizons. As the original person said, the website has been completely stripped down. I used to routinely read and re-read stuff on the original site just for fun, and to get myself excited for the day it would come out =) If they plan to stick to their original plans, this game will kick EQ out the door. I say good riddance. Think back to when Luclin was launched, with Verant proclaiming the "good news" about the great and wonderful new character models, and graphics. What they didn't tell you (until LONG after they announced the release) was that approx. half the original players would no longer be able to play EQ anymore until they did a complete overhaul of their system, thus costing the average player loads of cash JUST for a game. And then there's the graphics .. has anyone taken a good look at oh ... say.. 90% of the mobs out there? THEY LOOK THE EXACT SAME. They failed miserably in their attempt to re-do EQ, and I am not hopeful that they will do any better with a "new" eq.
