Completely Serious Blizzard Announcements!

Oh man, Blizzard's pulling out all the stops for April Fool's Day this year. If you're starting to lose track of the jokes, here's the list (so far):

  • Crabby: The Dungeon Helper is coming in the next World of Warcraft content update to offer you helpful hints in any situation. Head over to the official site today to get a preview of Crabby in action. He might even help you celebrate the fact that it's Friday with the best song ever written.
  •  The Tomb of Immortal Darkness will also be added to WoW in patch 4.1.11. This 5-player dungeon uses cutting-edge Deep Dark® technology and features bosses like Omgsogoth, Dark Lord of Twilight. Check out the preview page to see a gameplay video. Or maybe you won't see it. It's kind of dark in there.
  • Of course, you're going to want to check out the preview notes for WoW patch 4.1.11. Between the Random Guild Finder and the Pet Appearance Tab, there's no doubt this is the best patch ever. Read the notes after the jump.
  • We finally get a Diablo III update as Blizzard announced the Horadric Cube app for your phone. Use it to create brand new apps with the Transmutation function, or just open demonic portals with the Translocation feature.
  • Blizzard's returning to the console scene with StarCraft: Motion Overdrive. Grab your Kinect (or if you prefer, a nameless brand that looks exactly like the Kinect), and get into the RTS action with your whole body. Watch the trailer below!
  • While you wait for the release of Motion Overdrive, check out the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty patch 1.4.11 notes. The new Ultimate Grandmaster league represents the top one player in each region. They also fixed a bug where Terran players were able to lose a game. Read the notes for all the details.

Battle.net Account Bound Heirlooms in PTR Notes

Blizzard has updated the patch 4.1 PTR notes, and they confirm that many account bound heirlooms will now bind to your Battle.net account. Here are the details:

  • Many "Account Bound" heirlooms are now labeled as "Battle.net Account Bound", meaning that they can also be traded or mailed to characters that are on different World of Warcraft accounts under the same Battle.net account.
  • Mail sent to characters on the same Battle.net account now arrives instantaneously, as it does for the same World of Warcraft account.
  • Mailing account-bound items to characters of the opposite faction on the same Battle.net account will now correctly translate faction-specific items to their appropriate equivalent.

The notes also state that Guild Challenges are now available for testing. For more details, check out the official Guild Challenges preview.

Final Issue of Curse of the Worgen Series Released

The final issue of the Curse of the Worgen comic miniseries is now available. You can pick up the digital version on the DC Comics and PlayStation Comics sites, or head over to your local comic retailer.

To celebrate the release of Issue #5, Blizzard has published covers from the series as desktop wallpapers. If you're a worgen fan, then they're definitely worth a look.

WoW Patch 4.1: Guild Challenges Official Preview

Blizzard has posted an official preview of the Guild Challenges feature that will be implemented in patch 4.1. Here's the one-sentence summary: "Built into the Info panel of the guild user interface, Guild Challenges will be weekly tasks guild groups can tackle for additional guild experience, achievements, and gold."

Guild Challenges are broken into the following categories: Dungeon, Raid and Rated Battleground. There is a set number of times each challenge can be completed per week. If participating members meet all the prerequisites, a gold reward will be deposited directly in the Guild Vault. Also, Guild Challenges award guild experience above the daily cap. If your guild has already reached the level cap, you'll earn even more gold.

Dev Watercooler: Ghostcrawler Discusses Interrupts

Lead Systems Designer Greg "Ghostcrawler" Street just published his second Dev Watercooler blog post, which is a new series "that provides an inside look into the thoughts and discussions happening within the World of Warcraft development team." In this entry, Ghostcrawler looks at the butterfly effect that spellcast interrupt abilities have had in the game.

Because interrupts such as Kick are easy to use and have a low cooldown, casters have been given a lot of instant spells and movement abilities to compensate in PvP. In PvE, casters have become more mobile with minimal DPS loss, which could make players view melee classes as a liability on certain encounters.

So what's the answer? Ghostcrawler suggests giving Pummel, Kick and Wind Shear 30-second cooldowns, but a lot of other mechanics would need to be redesigned to make that work. For more details, read Ghostcrawler's brainstorming session after the jump.

'

Do you want to run through the new Heroic Zul'Aman or Zul'Gurub dungeons with members of the Blizzard team? You may have you chance if you log onto the Public Test Realms today, March 29, from 4-6 p.m. PDT. Blizzard employees will be queueing for random Zul'Aman or Zul'Gurub runs, so you may find one in your party.

How will you know if you're grouped with a Blizzard member? They'll be in guilds called [Blizzard Horde] and [Blizzard Alliance]. Have fun during the Trollpocalypse!

Locke Explores Azeroth: Desolace

With a name like “Desolace,” I wouldn't expect much from a zone. It basically conjures up the image of a dead area with nothing much of note. And before Cataclysm, that described the zone to a T. A barren wasteland thanks to the Burning Legion's invasion, Desolace had only a few points of interest and a color palette that ranged from “gray” to “more gray.” The quests were spread-out, but I always hit it on my way up because, with a few good circuits, the zone offered fast leveling without the ganking that Strangelthorn Vale involved. The Cataclysm has changed the zone much for the better, offering a central quest hub and a wonderful infusion of the color green.

UI Q&A: Rearrange Your Characters in Patch 4.2

Blizzard just posted the answers to its third Ask the Devs Q&A, which focuses on the user interface. One answer immediately jumped out from the rest:

Q: Would you please implement a feature that allows players to change the order of their characters on the Character select screen? – 흑풍육손 (Korea), Fanahlia (North America/ANZ), Perle (Latin America)

A: Sure. Does 4.2 work for you? :)

Unless that smiley face is meant as a joke, it looks like we'll soon have the ability to rearrange our characters on the character select screen. I don't know about you, but I certainly welcome this change. You can read the full Q&A after the jump.

Patch 4.1 Content Preview: Rise of the Zandalari

  • Players with a high enough Archaeology skill can unlock an additional boss in Zul’Gurub.
