World of Warcraft Starter Edition Details Released

We've known for a few weeks that Blizzard lifted the time limit on the World of Warcraft free trial, but they've just released the official details regarding the new Starter Edition. With the launch of Patch 4.2: Rage of the Firelands, anyone can play for free up to level 20 without the time restrictions placed on trial accounts. Some new features are also available:

  • Players with the WoW Starter Edition can create draenei and blood elf characters, which were previously unavailable with trial accounts.
  • The two starting zones associated with these races are also available to people wishing to try out the game.
  • The gold limit has been raised to 10 gold, allowing Starter Edition players to purchase mounts when they reach the appropriate level.

You'll stop gaining experience once you hit level 20, but you're free to keep exploring Azeroth and roll new characters. You can upgrade to a full, paid account at any time and continue your adventures with the characters you created.

With the launch of the Starter Edition, all existing trial accounts, including expired ones, have been reactivated. If you ever had a trial account, you can once again access your characters.

New Real ID Party Feature Available for Testing

Blizzard just announced that the new Real ID party feature is now available for testing. This new feature will allow World of Warcraft players to invite their real-life Real ID friends of the same faction to a party regardless of the realm they play on, and then queue up for a 5-player regular or Heroic dungeon.

To invite a Real ID friend to a party, just open up your friends list and click on the “Plus” button to send an invitation to a Real ID friend. A party leader can invite any combination of Real ID friends from any realm, guildmates from the same realm, or other characters from the same realm to the same party. If the party leader isn’t able to fill up the entire party, the Dungeon Finder can fill in the missing roles.

When Blizzard announced this feature back in May, they said certain elements will be premium-based. According to today's post, Blizzard will "have information on the premium-based aspects of the Real ID Party system toward the end of the testing period." They haven't yet determined how long the testing period will last.

For more details, check out the FAQ below. You can discuss the topic in this thread in our WoW general forum.

Midsummer Festival Ends Tonight with Fireworks

Happy Fourth of July! This is just a friendly reminder that the Midsummer Fire Festival ends tonight with a fireworks display. Here are the details:

Endless Free Trial, Digital Battle Chest and More

It looks like Blizzard is adamant about getting some fresh blood into Azeroth. The company has kicked off a series of promotions, including an endless free trial and a new digital Battle Chest. Here's the rundown of all of the ways you can get your friends playing World of Warcraft.

  • Endless Free Trial: The time limit on free trials has been lifted, but the restrictions are still in place. The level cap for the trial is set at 20.
  • Digital Battle Chest: You can now pick up the original World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade expansion for $19.99. If you've ever owned the original WoW, then you'll automatically get The Burning Crusade for free.
  • Free WoW for Friends: Veteran players who have opted in to receive news and special offers from Blizzard have received an e-mail with a code for a free copy of WoW and 30 days of access. This means you can give a friend the original game and The Burning Crusade for free!
  • Recruit-A-Friend Extended to 80: The Recruit-A-Friend benefits have been extended from level 60 to 80, including the triple exp bonus.

With the launch of the endless free trial, many gamers have tossed the term "free-to-play" around. What are your thoughts on all of these promotions? What do you think the future holds for World of Warcraft?
