Harvest Festival Begins to Honor Fallen Champions

Today marks the beginning of the week-long Harvest Festival, a minor World of Warcraft event that lets players celebrate the memory of their faction's fallen champions. You can grab some food from the tables outside Ironforge and Orgrimmar and purchase some fireworks. There's also one quick quest to complete for each faction that asks you to honor the memory of Uther Lightbringer or Grom Hellscream.

If you're patiently waiting for the next major world event, Brewfest kicks off on September 20! The rest of the year continues to be eventful with Hallow's End in October, Pilgrim's Bounty and WoW's seventh anniversary in November, and the Feast of Winter Veil in December.

Making an MMORPG: Community

"What makes a good MMORPG?"

I've decided to devote a bit of my time and a few articles to exploring this. In my last pieces, I wrote about PvP interactions, character progression, gameplay mechanics and combat and story and premise. Today I'll talk about something I believe is what makes MMORPGs so special: Community.

UPDATE: Blizzard's response can be found after the jump.

WoW Patch 4.2.2 is Live, Squashes Some Bugs

So what's the good news? Blizzard's paving the way for patch 4.3 and its transmogrification, void storage, new Darkmoon Faire, three new 5-player instances and the Deathwing fight!

BlizzCon 2011 World of Warcraft Pet is Murkablo

Blizzard just announced that this year's BlizzCon-exclusive World of Warcraft in-game companion is "the fearsome-ish Murkablo, aquatic protégé of Diablo III's eponymous Lord of Terror!" If you want a Murloc/Diablo hybrid pet to call your very own, you'll need to attend BlizzCon 2011 or purchase a Virtual Ticket for $39.99. You'll also get a yet-to-be-revealed StarCraft II in-game gift.

Cower as the tiny pet burninates one of its victims. Fear the Murkablo!

Patch 4.3 Preview: The All New Darkmoon Faire

Blizzard just posted a preview of the all new Darkmoon Faire that's coming to Darkmoon Island in patch 4.3. Step right up and check out the highlights!

  • You can catch shows on the main stage or watch a fireworks display.
  • You can earn new achievements and titles.
  • Earn Darkmoon Faire Prize Tickets once a month by playing games like Whack-a-Gnoll, the Tonk Battle Royale, the Cannon, Ring Toss, the Shooting Gallery, and more.
  • Turn in those tickets for companion pets, recipes, toys, balloons, souvenirs, snacks, heirlooms and replicas of armor for Transmogrification.
  • Use your Darkmoon Field Guide to discover Darkmoon Artifacts when fighting monsters and exploring dungeons and Battlegrounds. Turn them in for experience, reputation and prize tickets.
  • Help out around the Faire to earn experience, prize tickets and profession skill points.
  • Similar to the Gurubashi Arena, the Darkmoon Deathmatch will let you fight for a treasure chest every three hours.
  • The woods around the Faire are dangerous.
  • You'll get to Darkmoon Island for free through portals in Elwynn Forest and Mulgore. You can pay mages in capital cities and on the island to port you around.

Blizzard Launches New Diablo III Community Site

Blizzard just launched the new Diablo III community site, which features the same format as the World of Warcraft and StarCraft II sites. "We've got a lot in store leading up to the release of Diablo III, including the launch of the Game Guide section featuring lore, characters, classes, maps, and more," Blizzard said.

If you're wondering when that mystical launch date will be, Blizzard hasn't announced it yet. In fact, they're asking fans to take the Diableard challenge by not shaving until the game is live and sending in a picture of your Viking look. If you can't grow a beard, they'll accept photos of beard-like constructs.

While you grow/make your beard, be sure to check out the new Diablo III forums and click around the new community site.

Legendary Episode 40: DEATHWING

GameBreaker.TV's latest episode of Legendary is up! ZAM's Mike B. aka Fony, Gary Gannon and Tankspot's Josh "Lore" Allen talk about all of the World of Warcraft patch 4.3 news coming out of Gamescom, including Transmogrification and Void Storage. They also discuss the upcoming threat changes and why low-level PvP needs some love.

4.3 Preview: Void Storage and Bag Search Feature

Blizzard just posted a preview of the Void Storage system that's coming in World of Warcraft patch 4.3. Since the Transmogrification armor and weapon customization system will require you to hold onto your favorite items, the Void Storage ethereals in Stormwind and Orgrimmar will give you 80 slots of long-term storage space.

Since this is long-term storage that's targeted toward sentimental and aesthetic reasons, "any item placed in Void Storage will be stripped of all its enhancements, including enchants, gems, sockets, and reforged stats, and some items will simply not be eligible for Void Storage at all." It will cost gold to unlock Void Storage; a screenshot in the preview says 1,000 gold, but that's not final. A small fee will be required for each item deposited into or withdrawn from Void Storage.

In addition to Void Storage, Blizzard is also adding a bag search feature in 4.3 that will allow players to search for items within their bags and bank space using small search box located near the top of your main backpack.

For more details, read the full Void Storage preview after the jump.
