Emergency Maintenance on US Realms

If you're on a U.S. server and planned on playing this morning, you may have to wait a little longer due to emergency maintenance.

All US realms will be undergoing Emergency Maintenance to resolve current In-Game issues at 5:00am PST (Pacific Standard Time). Downtime is expected to be approximately 2-4 hours. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve these issues.

That means there's anywhere from a few minutes to a couple hours until the maintenance is complete. You can discuss the issue in this thread in our general forum.

Jimmy Fallon Gets Tips from Felicia Day

Everyone's favorite News Anchor from Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, interviews World of Warcraft fanatic, Felicia Day. She gives some serious pointers to all of us. Every person who thinks that Warcraft would be a fun game to play, take some notes! Also, it is always wonderful news to know that girls play the games that drive boys wild.

Felicia Day, for those of you unaware, is from "The Guild," the Yahoo! Video Award-winning online sitcom about the daily lives of the members of a standard gaming guild. Also, she loves to mull about bad fantasy art in her blog. She's quite the hoot. We are happy Jimmy managed to snag her for a stellar interview.

Machinima Rising

The following editorial contains views that are the opinion of the author and not necessarily the views of Allakhazam.com

Machinima, considered a hobby by some and a profession by others, is an art form that combines two of my favorite pastimes, movies and video games. MMORPGs in particular have been given a chance to shine in this medium as producers utilize the settings of these virtual worlds to tell their own tales. Machinima is certainly not a new endeavor; gamers have been creating story-driven videos since the days of “Quake” in 1996. But I feel the best is yet to come for the genre as creative minds keep pushing the envelope to make these films rival, and often surpass, Hollywood blockbusters. If you haven't gotten into this hobby yet, hopefully this article acts as a primer to get you in the machinima mood, especially for ones that are filmed in World of Warcraft.

Of course, not all machinima focuses on MMOs. All you have to do is visit Machinima.com to browse fan-created videos of numerous games, including The Sims, Halo, Half-Life and Grand Theft Auto. And you’ve all seen the famous “Red vs. Blue ” Halo series, right? While all games can offer great material for a movie, depending on the creativity of the producer, there’s something about MMO machinima that just stands out to me.

Interview with Mia Rose

One of the clichés or stereotypes that has been commonly pinned on gamers is that, if you're a gamer, you must be a complete social reject or a nerd. This has always bugged me, mostly because that hasn't ever truly been the case. Over the years, the public's perception has changed drastically because of the attention that celebrities (read "influential people") and the media have given gaming. Additionally, the industry as a whole has grown up quite a bit since the "King's Quest" days. Not only has this changed the stereotype, but it's brought social groups together that in the past, wouldn't have been likely to associate with one another. 'Online Gaming' is something I'm passionate about because of what it does for diversity. Race, Religion, Occupation, Political View. None of that holds any relevance in a game. Instead of Black and White, you have Horde and Alliance. I think you get the point that I'm trying to make here.

Mia Rose is one of those closet gamers who at first glance, you'd never in a millions years assume has an 80 Warlock, and in a guild that has Malygos in farm status. However, that's the reality. She's an easy on the eyes gamer who speaks the language and would rather be at home raiding, then out at a party.

We had the opportunity to meet up with her at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) earlier in the month to get an idea as to just how big a gamer she really is. What we uncovered in the interview, might surprise you, excite you, and possibly even make you fall in love. If you thought Mia Rose was hot before, wait until you see her talk about World of Warcraft.

Make sure to watch our video interview with Mia Rose, after the jump.

Blizzard Still Fixing Things

After a tumultuous day of fixing Wintergrasp, Blizzard has decided to disable it again due to a new issue conceived in the womb of fast-development. This is not a repeat from earlier, this is a newly-made, fresh off the compiler error. Not only that, but all arenas will be disabled until they can get the points to count correctly.

"With the release of patch 3.0.8 we have implemented a new matchmaking system for arenas that will improve the overall system and help ensure that players will be matched against others of equal skill. The new matchmaking system uses a rating that you cannot see, and is separate for each of the arena brackets. The rating changes at the end of each match are affected by this new system, and as it just came out, there may initially be some odd behavior in rating changes, but these will straighten out fairly quickly. "

And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, then try not to forget the rolling restarts beginning at 5 AM Pacific Time. With all the back-and-forths, hopefully this issue will be resolved with haste.

Wintergrasp Issues Possibly Resolved

Patch day for World of Warcraft has been hectic, to say the least. Given the amount of content modified and created for this patch, a few issues were to be expected. The turn-around time is great, and all of us players appreciate the concern and amount of work put into this. There are still some issues remaining, but the major unforeseen ones are handled.

Arenas Temporarily Disabled

According to a post by Nethaera the arena system has been temporarly disabled while they try to find a rating calculation bug. You can read the original post here.

Now In 3-D

The developers at Blizzard came up with a little present from our friends at Nvidia: Three-Dimensional Massively Multiplayer. Not just Direct-3D or OpenGL, mind you: Three-Dimensions. How? Through some awesome, yet stylish glasses. Not recommended for night-driving or hang-over headache prevention. C-Net even got excited, and wrote up the technology. Fascinating stuff, and I'm sure none of us can wait until this is mainstream!

Wintergrasp Disabled on All Realms

The new patch released for World of Warcraft, 3.0.8, seems to be causing realm-wide crashes when Wintergrasp changes hands. This problem has been remedied by disabling it entirely by simply hard-coding the faction in-command of Wintergrasp. This will be fixed quickly, we are told. For the time being, we must all be patient and wait for the coders to fix these minor issues. With these fixes, the servers should be more stable. There were rolling restarts on all realms from 5 AM to 6 AM. Additionally, there are some documented issues as well that should get attention soon. All-in-all, it was a pretty solid patch day from Blizzard.

Patch 3.0.8 Enters the Arena

The time has come! We hate to say "I Told You So," but version 3.0.8 of World of Warcraft is finally here! Those of you who want to know what is included, check that out here. Maintenance was extended until 1PM Pacific Standard Time, but shortly, we shall all get to see it! Even though the United States site doesn't even seem to take notice, the European site seems fully prepared for a new release.

While you wait for it to download, feel free to post about it in our forums !
