Team Solo Mid Wins $20,000 LoL MLG Tournament

After what felt like an endless stream of back-and-forth victories and losses, USA favorite Team Solo Mid finally triumphed over longtime rival Counter-Logic Gaming to win the $20,000 pot and MLG Pro Circut Trophy. After losing to Dignitas early, CLG resurged through the loser's bracket. TSM, meanwhile, beat Dignitas in the semifinals. CLG managed to squeeze a 2-1 victory in the grand finals, starting the loser's second chance games, which again went 1-1 and left only one final match deciding the winner. TSM managed to lock down an early kill against xHazzard's Nidalee, and starved CLG's farm while quickly taking dragon at every opportunity. A surprise Baron steal from HotshotGG couldn't hold the tide of TSM's gold advantage, and they finally came out on top after an exhausting, drawn-out set of teamfights. Congratulations to Team Solo Mid!

Riot Games Oddly Claims No New Modes Planned

You might remember how Supremacy was a registered domain by none other than Riot Games, the developers and maintainers for League of Legends. This would be the familiar pattern just before the Dominion release. But, oddly, at the E3 interview yesterday at Twitch.TV, Riot's lead champion designer Morello said they were "not talking about new maps or game modes right now." Which, given that they registered Supremacy, is an odd thing to say. Of options, only a few come to mind; he could simply have dismissed the question to not announce anything before they were ready, which is likely. Or, equally likely, Supremacy is not a game mode or map at all. If it's not a map, then what is it?

Absurd League of Legends Exploit Fixed

In case you missed it, last week a huge exploit was found in League of Legends. Using a deceptively simple workaround, it was possible to put more points into a single mastery than the maximum allowed. It sounds like no big deal until you consider that many of them feature cooldown reduction of summoner spells, which led to this video. Watch as the Urgot zips around the battlefield with hundreds of instantaneous flashes, insta-killing Baron and dragon with Smite spam. It has since been fixed, but I think it's worth it just to see this video.

League of Legends Lays Out Season 2 Championship

Just as last season, League of Legends - currently the #1 multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game - swings its popularity hard, putting all of the world's best teams into Season Two's World Championship in Los Angeles. Last year, the grand prize was a cool five million. And now the stakes are set at a cool three million dollars. All the biggest teams will be competing - Dignitas, Counter Logic Gaming, Team Solo Mid, Epik Gaming, and Returning Season 2 Champion Fnatic MSI - as well as plenty of the potential newcomers that have sprung up in the preseason. As last year, it's going to be an incredible set of games.

Oh yeah and there's also a sweet video here too.

UPDATE: The original post incorrectly stated that the prize pool was three million for Season One and five million for Season Two. These have been switched.

Riot Games Registers 'Supremacy' Domain

League players might remember back when Dominion was hinted at, as the domain for their new game mode was registered before it was leaked. Well let the speculation begin - the company who secured Dominion for Riot have gotten 'Supremacy' as well. In addition to the regular leagueoflegendssupremacy.com that was secured some time ago, they've now gotten several typo versions of the phrase, as well as the probably-costly supremacy.net and supremacy.com. The full details are behind the jump, but either way, this is hinting that Riot was very happy with the success of Dominion and wants to do it again.

ZAM @ PAX East: Hands-on With Hecarim & Varrus

ZAM is also having a twitter contest to give away close to two dozen PAX Sivir skins! Just tweet / follow @ZAMOfficial or @Pwyff with why you think you should win (one tweet per account, so two chances to win!), and we'll randomly select a few lucky tweeters throughout the day. Be sure to follow us, or we can't directly message you with your winning code!

At PAX East, Riot Games was out in full force, dominating its corner of the venue with tournament streams, shoutcasted games of Dominion, cosplay celebrations, and even dance-offs for prizes. Also available for play were two new champions, Hecarim and Varrus, who will make their debut in the League within the next two content patches, respectively. Always eager to try new champions, I decided to spend much of my hands-on time experimenting with these new characters and, now, I can share those experiences with you.

League of Legends Lulu Patch Notes

Patch day for League of Legends!

The highly anticipated support character at long last reveals herself - Lulu, a fae sorceress and her sprite companion, Pix. With a combination of a slow, her polymorph, and her team buffs, she looks to be a fierce competitor to Janna and Sona for the title of top-tier support champion. And in addition to that, she looks fun as all hell.

Lulu's patch comes with substantial tweaks to items - Hexdrinker, a long-overlooked item, has been reworked. The new version removes an item from its recipie and reducing the cost, shield bonus, damage, and its duration. But in exchange, it upgrades into an all new item, the Maw of Malmortius, an improved version that also has an attack bonus for every 2.5% health you are missing.

The full patch notes detail that all of the lifesteal items are on the chopping block, too. Vampiric Scepter, Wriggle's Lantern, and the Bloodthirster all are having their lifesteal percentage reduced, aimed at reducing the ability to sustain in lane. Similarly, Irelia's Hiten Style and her ultimate were nerfed for a similar reason.

Jax, who has had issues with being focused, is having his hit points raised and his ultimate reworked. It now gives him bonuses to his defensive stats when he activates it, aimed at keeping him in the fight more. Blitzcrank's signature attack, the Rocket Grab, is having its damage increased greatly. Orianna players will be happy to see that her spells, which have suffered from confusing targeting, will now better convey their area of effect. While Rammus's powerball is being tweaked so it lands when you attack a champion, his armor and attack damage are being nerfed, bumping down his scary ganks slightly. Shaco, who has been known as an early-game destroyer who lategame is easily delt with, is having his damage evened out on his Two-Shiv Poison.

The most critical change I noticed was, of all things, an almost invisible nerf to the golem's blue buff, that gives massive regeneration/cooldown reduction to the wearer. Mana regeneration has been halved. This is going to do a lot to modify jungling and mid-lane battles.

The rest is all bugfixes and tooltip clarity, but it's worth taking a gander at if you're just as obsessed with this game as I am!

LoL's New Champion: Fiora, The Grand Duelist

She's here! League of Legends' newest addition is a speedy one in the form of Fiora, The Grand Duelist. Touted as a new AD melee carry that relies heavily on speed over Riot's previous CC-reduction focus, Fiora is all about moving about the battlefield, using her abilities like Lunge and Burst of Speed to keep mobile, while her Duelist passive, Riposte, and Blade Waltz serve to keep her alive when focused.

All in all, time will tell if Fiora can make it as a strong AD melee carry in LoL's current tank-heavy metagame. As to whether she can match up to top-tier melee AD carries like Irelia or Riven remains to be seen, but hopefully players will be able to find a spot for Fiora in their lineups.

You can watch the Fiora Champion Spotlight here!

Fiora The Grand Duelist Revealed in LoL

Melee carries in League of Legends are getting a new Champion to add to their rooster with the latest addition of Fiora, The Grand Duelist. This Champion is the first all-out take on a true melee carry since the games' launch and focuses on one particular aspect: speed.

Fiora's raw agility and lightning speed are what set her apart from her oversized weapon yielding counterparts. With three of her abilities focusing on movement and speed, Fiora can also parry the next basic attack, reflecting magic damage back at the attacker. While Fiora's rapier might not be as large as most other melee carries, underestimating her is an often fatal mistake.

Abilities:

  • Duelist (passive) - Fiora regenerates health over 6 seconds each time she deals damage. Striking champions will cause this effect to stack up to 4 times.
  • Lunge - Fiora dashes forward to strike her target, dealing physical damage. Fiora can perform the dash a second time within a couple seconds at no mana cost.
  • Riposte - Fiora's Attack Damage is increased. When activated, Fiora parries the next basic attack and reflects magic damage back to the attacker. Works against champions, monsters, and large minions.
  • Burst of Speed - Fiora temporarily gains additional Attack Speed. Each basic attack or Lunge she lands during this time increases her Movement Speed. Killing a champion refreshes the cooldown on Burst of Speed
  • Blade Waltz (ultimate) - Fiora dashes around the battlefield to deal physical damage to enemy champions. Successive strikes against the same target deal less damage.
