I figured there would be a fair diversity of opinions here, and it's a topic I really don't quite udnerstand so I'd be interested in hearing what others think. Games have a wide variety of settings, from monster battling (pokemon/yugioh tcg) to scifi galactic conquest (Eclipse) or even more mundane activities like farming (agricola) and building infrastructure (powergrid).

So what are some game settings--oraspects of those--(board/cardgames preferred) that you've found highly appealing, and why?

Space is always good and fairly easy to work with. Steampunk, western, fantasy can work if crafted well. Honestly, for me the best setting is one that makes the most sense for a game. There are a wide variety of games with a wide variety of settings, but the best ones are ones where the setting is firmly entwined in the game. Games with "pasted on" themes are usually mediocre, even if they're mechanically sound. Usually when I'm thinking up ideas for a game, I think of the theme first, and then go to mechanics.

Do you have an example of a game that feels like it meshes setting and mechanics particularly well? An example of the opposite?

Battlestar Galactica is the first that comes to mind, because obviously the game was entirely built upon the theme, and does so very well. Other games that are not based on a show though that still match theme and mechanics very well... I'd say Libertalia (pirates), Pandemic (fighting diseases), and Flash Point (firefighters) do a particularly good job.

As for games that don't do well, they're obviously not as memorable for me. Things like Dominion and Flash Duel come to mind, but those aren't particularly theme-oriented in the first place. I'll try to come up with a better example and get back to you.
