Looks pretty cool in alpha so far. Now that I no longer have any attachment to any MMO, I might pick this up or attempt to get into beta/trial. I wasn't impressed with the game at any point during its first life cycle. I was hyped for GW2 and never ended up playing it. I have also considered trying Secret Life and Tera but for Tera, I tried it out and lost interest immediately. Since I got so deep into FFXI, I could see this being of interest to me.

Kind of getting the feeling back for my MMO chops since I haven't actively played a game since I quit FFXI for good early last year. I think I'll be watching some of those alpha videos when I get home tonight. It looks like a much improved game and I'm building a new PC soon.

What kind of sub model they gonna be running on the re-release? If it's Guild Wars style, I might have to try it out after watching that video someone linked in that guilty pleasure games thread.

I don't know, actually. I'd assume they'll try sticking with the monthly subscription, at least for the first while.

I know it seems silly, but I kinda miss my character.

If they release it for PS3, will it be cross compatible with PC? My roommate is saying if it re-releases to decent reviews, he'll likely get it so I'm curious if he and I could play the game together.

I'm pretty sure that was the plan from the get go. And partly why they redesigned the graphics engine: it was too high-end for the PS3 to handle.

The big deal breaker would be the previous UI issues for me. Pretty games are nice and all, but that lag was a complete and utter non-starter. After bidding my time and hearing the complaints, I didn't even bother trying the game the first go round. I saw them tinkering with the map open and the crafting/harvesting in the one video. I want to see some quest dialogue and general menu/npc interaction before I even consider giving this game a shot.

Was there a DRK in XIV?

Sort of. The big draw was adding abilities from other classes together. So you could take some BLM spells and abilities while using a Marauder/Lancer weapon.

I think they were leaning away from that in the recent patches, but I'm not really sure.

I'm down with that. My PC isn't high end by any means(it wasn't high end four years ago when I bought it), so bringing it down to PS3 levels works just fine for me.

Out of curiosity, does this one share some of the Race/Class combo prejudices held by players in the previous one? I mean, would I be looked at as silly if I picked a suboptimal combo, or are the races mostly aesthetic or perhaps story oriented?

Only aesthetic. (IIRC, there was a 1-2 stat point difference which amounted to a negligible difference.)

Ah, good.

Since this thread is the most active in weeks, to keep it going, what were the major flaws from the last release to look out for? I'm thinking I'm gonna wait til it's out for a week and see what the rest of you all say about it, but it'd be nice to know what to be on the lookout for.

The UI was terribly slow and unresponsive. The system was also unwieldly when it came to unloading your inventory from what I understand. Just constant pauses when doing anything involving menus. Also, SE was a huge offender for cutting and pasting terrain. So much so that you could encounter the same exact small area several times in one zone. All the zones felt really empty whenever I watch videos. They felt abandoned and lifeless.

Basically, nothing about the game made me want to rush out and actually try playing it.

They fixed most of the UI issues, other than the AH being annoying, when I had quit.
I found the quests and stuff pretty bland, and too easy for the most part.

It just very clearly felt like a rushed job.

That said, it felt more fun towards the end, when they finally figured out how to get people to group up for EXP parties.

I'm totally gonna give it a shot when its in beta.

Exactly I need to keep an eye out so I can get on the same server with you peoples. I would love to get into FFXI again but I know that I wouldn't. I'd log in and stand around and do nothing. Not even worth the minimal time it would take to torrent a copy with all the most recent updates. That said, I still have a huge backlog on PS3 that I need to address. I'm currently working at getting platinum in Persona 4 Golden.

Honestly though, I think the game I'm most excited for at this time is Ni No Kuni which is FINALLY coming out next month.

Especially since I preordered what should be an amazing special edition.

I don't mind if they make it one path(even the faster path) for EXP, but I hope they don't take it too far into becoming the only path. That's what kept me from ever getting into XI. Was over at a buddy's house and he wanted to show me what the game was like. Kept telling me how awesome it was. He ended up sitting around looking for a party for several hours while we watched a couple movies.

At the time, I was playing an F2P MMO called Knight Online. If you've never played it, at a certain level it becomes much faster to group for leveling, but you could still solo. It was a bit of a grind, but you could solo things like orcs(or whatever they called them) with very little trouble, or things like Troll Kings if you were an insane kiter like my roommate and I were. The EXP wasn't great on either(orcs were the better EXP/hour of the two but Troll Kings were more fun), but at least you could do something solo. So I ended up telling him there would be no way I'd join a game that forced you to party to do something as basic as level.

I'd love to get on the same server. Even if our schedules only meshed once in a while, it'd be cool to finally play a game with you all. Especially one where I was playing with you guys on my main and not making an alt to go hang out on whatever other server a group of Zam folks just decided to reroll on.

It was pretty convenient to solo to max level. It took longer than grouping, but it was more than possible.

At a point where I have to do some work(albeit work where I can read stuff while working), I opened up the TVTropes page for FFXIV. Their description amused me.

Quote:
Final Fantasy XIV is the fourteenth game in the groin-grabbingly popular Final Fantasy series.

Out of curiosity, you guys gonna start new characters on a newb server, or you gonna load up your old ones?
#25 Dec 25 2012 at 10:07 AM Rating: Excellent
Well, my understanding is that even if you keep your old character, you'll still have all your classes reset to level 1. Basically the only things that will carry over are the character model and the name. Maybe I'm wrong though. Either way, I'll definitely be keeping my old one. I spent a lot of time getting everything just right and I'd like to keep it that way. Keeping the levels would be an added bonus.

I think I remember reading over on the FFXIV boards that the characters would keep their levels. That's why I asked.
