One of my players is a bit of a puzzle fanatic. Since he's built a severely sub-optimal character for combat, I'm thinking of throwing in the occasional puzzle so he can shine on those while the other player still gets to shine when they kill big things. Any suggestions for some simple to run puzzles to throw at them(I'm thinking no more than one a dungeon when it's appropriate)?

I've got one figured out for this week. It's a variation on one I saw in the NWN Kingmaker module. They get 6 different colored gems and there are six receptacles. They then get a small number of clues(I'm thinking 4-5) about the relative locations where the gems need to be placed(the module had things like "the red fires burned north of the green trees"). The variation is mostly in that I'm not going to make them find the gems elsewhere in the dungeon, just have them be in a box in the room.

So, any other suggestions I can throw into later dungeons?

I recall reading about a trap that swapped everyone's personalities into a different body within the party. Temporarily, the mental type traits would be transferred along with the personality, and the physical type traits would stay with a given body. As the party continued through the dungeon, they came across devices that would allow a swap to occur, but you could only use each device once, and you could only swap to a given body once, so the party had to figure out how to get back into the correct bodies without trapping anyone in the wrong body.

Although you may want to have some additional incentive to get back to your original body, or else you'll have someone deliberately stay a sorcerer/wizard in a monk's body (with accompanying feats), or something equally ridiculous.

I'm not entirely certain how well that'll work with two players. Something to consider for later on when I do my next campaign, where they'll each be running 2 characters.

Edit: Also, won't they need that one equation they developed for that episode of Futurama to make it work?

You know, I find myself a little concerned about how said poorly optimized for combat player is going to handle an encounter I have planned for this weekend. As it was, he was upset that his Eidolon couldn't really hit a 26 AC enemy last weekend, but this weekend the monster I want to use is a 32 AC character. I'll just have to hope that the other encounters featuring lower ACs and the puzzle will be enough.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the people I heard that from had just cribbed it from Futurama.

Another puzzle you could try is giving a series of numbers, and then having them guess what the rule is that governs whether the set is valid or not. You give them the first set, and then they give example sets that you say "Yes" or "No" to them as appropriate. When they think they've figured out the rule, then they guess and you open an envelope containing the rule written down (so they can't accuse you of changing it, etc.). If they win, they get a prize/unlock door/whatever, if they lose, a trap activates or an enemy is released into the room.

Quote:
Example: 1 3 5 - Yes
2 4 6 = Yes
0 8 16 = Yes
-3 0 3 = Yes
-3 0 2 = Yes
6 5 7 = No
1.2 5.9 11 = Yes
5i 7i 9i = No

The Rule is "Any three real numbers in ascending order". Apparently lots of people get this problem wrong because they get hung up on the details.

There's also "Illumination and Light", but there's a decent chance they've heard this puzzle before:

Quote:
I like illumination, but I don't like light.
I like cheese, but I don't like dairy.
I like books, but I don't like libraries.
I like bubbles, but I don't like soap.
I like beer, but I don't like alcohol.

Instead of having them give the rule, just have them give five valid examples in a row; once you get the rule it's easy. The rule is (if you hadn't guessed already, since it's much easier to get the pattern in print than verbally): "I like things with double letters in them, and I don't like things that don't have double letters in them"..

Only one out of four(I may add in a mixed copy of two if they mow through them quickly) potential fights has an AC over 20. Granted, its AC is 32(touch AC 14, so at least he'll have some way to hit it). Combine that with the puzzle and I think he's got no room to *****. Other than the fact that none of the fights are small enough(either too many creatures/too large creature) for them to use their Open Pit > Fall on bad guys strategy as their only strat.

Here's the Futurama math thing I was talking about. You might find it interesting.

I made my puzzle too easy. They solved it in less than 2 minutes. Smiley: laugh
