Can we get through week 1 without a derail?

Obviously not.

Besides, you said you already watched the whole thing, and you haven't posted anything regarding Week 1's episodes. Complaining about a derail when you failed to bother participating is just kind of dumb.

What are your thoughts on the first 4 episodes? What are you most interested in seeing how it plays out?

It's been a few years since I saw this one, but I remember it being little more than a popcorn anime. Entertaining at the time, but once it was over I stopped caring about it. It was a slow season for releases at the time.

Saw the first four episodes, and I'm kinda into it. I was expecting a far more shounen series, but I'm enjoying the freshness of the protagonist not being out to save his friends or humanity (intentionally). I'm a little displeased that aside from the bronze tribe and heroic tribe the rest seem to be entirely human. I'd prefer to see a little more characterization for them though.

Vataro mentioned hoping battles not being the focus of this series. I can't see that they will be. The nodos completely outclass any other force in the series and none of the characters seem to have any delusions otherwise about this. They also don't seem to have any special abilities, so the fights simply can't be interesting, and the writers don't seem to have any delusions about this either.

There are some things that irk me. Mail and Tail, twins that act the same, have similar names, and are mischievous are fairly cliche. For some reason I don't quite find myself doubting that they're qualified for their position, though I know I should. Iolaous being their brother and all of them being the children of the captain seems like a fairly and unnecessary contrived linkage.

I'm getting a view vibes from Towards the Terra. It has similar themes about racial conflicts in space and godly powerful characters, as well as somewhat similar character designs.

I see the Silver Tribe as more like Space Elves, but that doesn't necessarily disagree with what you're saying.

My thought was that the other 'humans' that weren't silver were actually iron, but that the iron tribe wasn't as collective as the other tribes. They technically aren't refugees from earth, because they populated another planet long ago, but are still properly of the iron tribe.

I'm caught up from last week now, and don't have much more to add other than I agree with Al's assessment of the twins and their brother. Why they have special powers and the captain doesn't though...

Holy hell. Week 3 spoilers:Humanity just ignited Jupiter! And Age is fighting a time jumping Nodos. And, of course, this week's episodes end with Age about to be hit by some kind of energy spear.

See, it gets good. Next time we do this, I'll show some self restraint and play by the rules. I'm afraid to comment on anything, because I don't like spoiling.

Episodes 5-8 hit some of my pet peeves.

1. Space injuries. If you're flying a small craft (mechs) in space, you'd don't get injured. You're either ok or you're dead.

2. Arbitrary willingness to fly. Age can fly whenever he wants to in human form, yet his battle with Karkinos initially begins with silly things like ground fighting and a car chase.

3. Unnecessary cleavage. That commander was packign some serious guns and she wasn't afraid to show them off. I guess a standard issue military uniform couldn't contain her.

4. Space combat is hard to do, and so it can mostly be forgiven for making the same mistakes many other media do. For example, meleeing enemies in space is about the dumbest thing ever.

I'm still enjoying it, but these kinds of things tend to pop out at me.

For the Nodos, I call it rule of drama/rule of cool. The fights are more engaging when they do it that way. Also, he's freaking Hercules. But I agree w/ regards to the Bronze Tribe and the Mecha. That said, I'd imagine the swarm thing the bugs do to ships would be highly effective if you don't have some kind of GARDIAN type system. Why the wouldn't have one is beyond me, but you know, rule of drama or some such.

Barring inertial dampers of some kind, whiplash and other similar "got thrown around the cockpit" type injuries would probably be common and relevant and could lead to a bit of minor lacerations.

For a show that has unnecessary cleavage, this one is only like a one on the boob scale. They don't go over the top with it like so many others do.

Watching ep 12 now. Gotta say, I still like the OP. ED not so much.

As for the show... well, it's not quite turned into an action fest but it's pretty close. I felt the plot has been lacking these past few episodes, other than the whole prince being a giant douche thing.

The next couple episodes <minor spoiler>will still be fighting heavy(just finished this week's episodes). But what just happened on episode 16 was quite moving.

<Much larger spoiler.>Mehitok(sp?) pledges to fight alongside humanity after Dhianella offers the protection of humanity for his tribe in exchange for his agreement to stop fighting.

Yea, I imagined the fighting wouldn't suddenly stop but hopefully the focus will shift. After ep 12, all I can say is... no wonder the other tribes hate humanity.

I like parts of the OP, though as a whole I don't care for it much. The spinning letters seems like a fairly outdated technique, something I'd see in a cheesy powerpoint presentation. The intro segments for the ship's crew also seems to be a throwback to old styles of anime. About the only segments I like are those where the songs plays "dark" and "blight."

The ED is the kind that either works very well or doesn't work at all. I think there are very subtle elements in what make or break a very mellow and melancholy ED. Emotional involvement in the series also matters a great deal. It worked for me with [link=www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_BR5dQllpY]Gantz[/link] and Chobits, but just not here.

I find the problem with the action to be that it's just mindless beat-em-up combat. There are no strategies and no tactics. There's just fighting, and outcomes decided by what the plot demands.

AS for the princess' brothers. I think they improve the show, but clearly they hail from the same school of subtlety as admiral double dee. They're Ferengi. Intended to be serious antagonists in the show, yet their buffoonery makes it impossible to take them seriously. They seem less corrupt than comical. Princess is turning out to be an ok character, and seems to have some depth to how she seems her role in this conflict.

I hadn't given much thought to the OP and ED, tbh. I really like the opening song, though.
Edit:

I can agree with ya there. The seconding ending theme from GTO(I think it was the second, no youtube at work to verify) worked rather well for me.

Don't worry, it's almost impossible to find an OP or ED on youtube for many shows anyway. Between the rare isntances of censorship and the deluge of AMVs and fanmade alternates you'd have an easier time knocking on people's doors and asking if they happen to own a DVD copy you could watch.

I've never had trouble finding opening or ending themes. Them disappearing from my playlist happens fairly frequently, but they can always be found again. Then again, I'm not usually worried about the video part, just the music, so AMVs aren't a problem.
