So that government job I applied for phoned me back for an interview, I am a wee bit nervous despite the fact that the references I provided should have made me a shoe in for the position. Not to mention I have worked for them before for three different contract positions. Two of my references would be fairly high up in the public works department, and would be involved in my hiring process. Despite that I am a bit skeptical about the caliber of my skill set as compared to other applicants, if there even were any. Most of the nerves probably come from the fact that I have run my mouth off a bit at work the last few days, about certain aspects of the company and management that I find unsatifactory. The lack of back up job when I voice the concerns officially in our staff meeting on Monday (shortly before the interview); may cause me to be significantly more vague and politically correct than I intend to be.

That being said what do you do to get rid of the game day jitters, when you go for a job interview or the like?

I recently had a similar situation. I was blindsided by the majority of questions not being job related. I ended up doing a lot of post-interview research and had a good laugh or 10 at people who were dumber than I was.

A quick **** never hurt anyone either.

Do some research on the department and its functions. Come up with some questions or talking points that you find interesting or can feign interest in. Most interviews I've gone to end with some "do you have any questions for us?" and actually having well-thought-out questions is awesome.

Do you know how many people will be in the interview? Bring a manilla folder with enough copies of your CV for yourself and the interviewers. Also have a sheet with your questions/talking points on it for yourself.

Don't overdress. You want to dress slightly below the people who will interview you unless they wear jeans/t-shirts to work. Then some khakis and a polo/buttondown would be appropriate. People in general are going to be more likely to want to work with someone they see themselves in. If you can pick up on the interviewers' personalities/skillsets and play into them (without overselling yourself), they'll most remember the candidate who closely mirrors their own ideals.

A two hour edging session would be better for this type of thing.

So phone call back today apparently a class 3 license, my previous work experience and work ethic, and the fact that most of the hiring panel was on my reference list was enough to bag me a fancy government type job.

Does a government job in Canada make you an official party member, comrade?

Nah, it just means you get better benefits and stuff than a union worker and do about half the work. Without the instability of union employment.
