So do I stick with my sh*tty, over payed job with way too many hours; or do I take a government job in public works running 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, with holidays off and relatively stable work load and future in the industry?

Downside to the gov't job, well I am a public servant, I get paid less to start although the industry is more stable, predictable, and less prone to cut backs. The difference in pay is 2-3 dollars an hour, the real difference in pay comes from the hours. I will go from 300+ hours a month to 40 hours a week. Although the industry I am in now is just coming up to it's slow season and will likely have little to no work between late april and late may/early june.

I live in the states, if I could get a Government job I so would.
I already work a 40hr week mon-fri, so I can't help you there. I do enjoy knowing I have my weekends off.

Trust me when I say that you can't keep up with a 300+ hour month for very long and not have it affect you. I long for time off. I would recommend evaluating your finances and see if you will be okay with a little less income for now. If so, go for the gov't job.

As an aside (but semi related), it's 2am and I'm posting from work. Someone entertain me until I get off at 8am.

Failblog or cracked.com backlog, perhaps?

I wish. The hospital internet blocks both of those, as well as a bunch of other stuff like youtube. This and facebook remain untouched though, oddly enough.

Actually, yes, and if I hadn't gone to med school I would have done something very similar to that. I love analyzing modern orchestral music (particularly from video games, movies, and other similar media), and if I had gone to graduate school for music I can guarantee you my thesis would have been on music in video games (particularly Zelda and FF).

Well, glad my random searching could alleviate your boredom for a bit.

To be honest, I was just listening to music to inspire some Pathfinder campaign writing and accidentally put that song title in the google search bar instead of the one on youtube. That was one of the first links.

In this day and age that is all that matters.

I left a great paying but unstable construction job to spend 3 years in school to become a computer nerd for this reason.

Govt job is the way to go even if underpaid. Retirement + stability. If you ever get laid off you have priority on other govt positions even if you aren't fully qualified. Only way I would ignore a govt job is if some one was offering 6 figures guaranteed for 10 years minimum. Otherwise I'd rather work 20 years making 50k or so a year pre tax. Long term outwieghs any financial possibilities from a higher paying job.

So basically take the lower pay and decent schedule, unless someone makes a supremely outrageous counter offer to try and keep me where I am.
