I'm getting the hang of it, it's actually kinda fun for a free Online RTS game.

I likes playing around as an archer, supporting my minions and other Heroes.

It's kinda hard to tell in this video if you haven't played, but basically, you can shoot giant frost arrows at enemy Heroes.

It's not an RTS Poldaran, not quite. League of Legends and all games like it are based on a game called DotA (Defense of the Ancients) which was a custom map from Warcraft 3. So it has RTS-like controls: overhead view, mouse clicks to move, minimaps.

But where it differs greatly is that you don't build a based and you don't produce units. You get one guy to control and that is all you will ever get. Instead he is your champion and you level him up, upgrade his abilities, and buy him new stuff.

That I knew. It's the "Free" part of which I was unaware.

I usually a shudder in horror at the thought of F2P games, because they're very often a case of being free to join the game but having to pay to matter.

LoL executes the model fairly well. There are two forms of currency, one which is earned by everyone as they play games, and another form which is bought. The only thing that cannot be bought with the free currency are cosmetic skins. Everything else in the game can be bought with the free currency.

It's also not a ridiculous ratio (i.s. in some games sure you could eventually get everything for free, but it'd take you years whereas $50 to get everything now). Getting down the basic necessities is fairly fast, and everything beyond that is essentially unlocking additional options--not upgrades. People who pay will get these options--not upgrades--sooner, but even then it takes a fairly ridiculous amount of money.

So be boil it down to a simple point. I have yet to pay them a single cent and I'm a decently high Elo player.

man is it just me or are video game companies on a hiring spree compared to businesses in other sectors? Riot games is hiring like 20 positions right now.

Video game companies also have the highest turnover rate* of any programming sector. Smiley: frown

*Ok, I don't know that that's true, but I've known game programmers who literally did not have a life outside work, and game programmers are very underpaid for the level of skill their jobs require, so it's not even like they're making bank now so they can have financial security in the future at a job they like better. The easier programming jobs pay better!

FTFY

I've found as a general rule that out of any two jobs in the same sector, requiring roughly equivalent qualifications, the easier job will pay more money

for instance - I am the main person responsible for developing communication materials on 3 broad policy areas as well as having to back up on almost every file (well, every file, in a pinch)

I write editorials (published under other people's names) - and create quotes that get used in newspapers. I regularly cold call news desks, pitch stories, and help manage difficult questions.

A friend of mine who used to work here is now working for more money with less stress in a job with fewer responsibilities. She is hiring someone to do "social media" (which is also something I have to do >.<) - the job pays more than I get now, while the person only has to be knowledgeable about 1 topic and use social media...

That said, I'd be bored at the second job... even though I'd make more money while being bored.

Riot games is a bit of an exception. League of Legends is doing quite well for them so they are in a growth phase.

I would take more money to be more bored in a heartbeat, tbh. And that's saying something since the most important part of my job is "don't fall asleep".
