And I realize that not everyone in here is American, but stupid censorship laws hurt everyone.

Eh, maybe I am just olde - cause the load times never bothered me - and PSP offers a lot of RPG titles that DS doesn't (and vice-versa, but I was more drawn to the former titles) like the Persona Portable series (in particular) the remastered Lunar game (nice game), Tactics Ogre and all the PS1 Final Fantasy games/not to mention other PS1 RPGs. And while I'm not someone that needs super high definition graphics - the smoothness of the sprites in a lot of the remastered games is SUPER NICE. I mean I do notice and like it, and am willing to sacrifice a second or two every 10-20 minutes for it. I recognize other people don't feel the same way, but that's just the way things are - people value different things.

(And seriously, a lot of stuff looks utterly terribad on DS)

I also like the thing where I can turn off my PSP when I'm playing a game, and then turn it on to be right where I left off.

I only play games on portable systems and my computer, so that probably changes things a bit for me. If I had a PS3 and could play all my downloaded games on it, I might choose to do that... but honestly, before I got my 3DS I was playing DS 1 time for every 9 times I was on my PSP (and sometimes I was playing GBA games on my DS). Game quality has a ton to do with that. No RPG on DS so far has compared even slightly with the level of engagement I've gotten with Persona portable 3.

I also dug the fact that I didn't need a hack chip to put TV on my PSP. Netflix on my 3DS has improved things on that front, but if I go on a trip where I won't have access to internet, the PSP will still win on that front. That said, at least the video quality on the 3DS is better than the utter crap quality of video on the DS.

Also I agree on the UMD movies thing... what a rip off! Way too high priced and really, how many times will you watch the same movie? They need to think in terms of "how much money is a person willing to pay for two hours of entertainment with limited replay value?" but they failed to do so.

See, I liked the DS FF remakes over the re-releases on the PSP. Having said that, Tactics Ogre actually ended up with more total playtime than FFT, but it was the exception. I've got I think 10 PSP games, 30+ DS. I've completed all my DS games except The World Ends With You (and not for lack of trying), I've only completed the Star Ocean re-releases and Tactics Ogre on the PSP. Everything else I lost interest in. If you're into Persona so much, maybe I'll have to check it out, because I honestly feel that some of the best RPGs (PERIOD!) were released on the DS, which is a major admission considering I'm a huge PC RPG fan and love lengthy classic console RPGs... yet I truly enjoyed almost every RPG released on the DS. I can't wait for a 3DS Etrian Oddysey!

Final Fantasy 2 and 4 remakes (the two I have) on PSP are fab just for the looks and improved smoothness/in the case of 4, the extras. I have 3 on DS but it is pretty meh in my opinion (what other remakes are on DS? I thought the rest were on advance...)

I've never owned a non-portable console so just having the opportunity to play 7,8, and 9 is nice. I bought 6 on the PSP because $10 < $30 (for the GBA version on ebay)

I think GBA is still hands down one of the best systems out there. I think it was perfect for its generation - just fantastic in terms of being backlit, having cool games, backwards compatibility (still annoys me that DS didn't allow play of GB/GBC games and after that support for advance games was dropped) - my lil advance works great - is perfect size for the pocket - not gimmicky (some DS games get WAY too gimmicky)

Persona 3 - I haven't tried 2, one is okay but sort of annoying but 3 is so far one of the best RPGs I've come across for a portable system. It is almost fully voice acted, and I love the whole aspect where you have to make choices about what you do (and those choices closing off other choices)

It may be a girly thing though cause you gain power by building relationships with characters....

What DS RPGs do you recommend?

[3:00:05 PM] Rog: "but I'll take used if I have to--to support its creators." someone may want to tell aliekber that buying used games is no different than pirating them, as far as the creators are concerned

[3:01:22 PM] Rog: also, olor that she can buy a flash card and play all the gb/gba/etc games she wants for free.

I know that they developers don't get money from used games, the "to support its creators" part was for new games. I suppose I could have written it as "--to support its creators, but I'll take used if I have to."

I had a flash card for my old DS... but the machine disappeared. I have no idea where it went... and it was sort of a hairy hassle to get the flash card so I just didn't bother next time around.

I actually like owning the carts. I find I already am ADD enough about games - that I don't often finish them - when I had the flash it felt like I spent more time downloading games than playing them.

Now I just have games I'm interested in, and I actually really like the carts as physical objects, the boxes, the art on the sticker (I really miss the old days of GB/GBC/GBA carts that were different colours and stuff)

For the DS,

Both Mario & Luigi RPGs
Chrono Trigger
All the Dragon Quest games (If you're into them, as they are a bit wierd sometimes)
FF III and IV
Rune Factory(though I guess technically not an RPG in the normal sense, only played 1 2 is supposedly the best)
FF 4 Heros of Light (some didn't like it, I love it)
Luminous Arc (and pretty much every game released by Atlus, even if they suck they have unique and endearing mechanics or themes)
I also liked the silly Chocobo games even though they were VERY targeted towards kids.

been eyeing up the DQ games, they just tend to be pricey and I haven't seen them used, really...

I have FF III for DS - don't need FF IV for DS (have PSP version) - Have 4 heroes of light but I got stuck in some stupid cave that I can't find my way out of... liked it until that point, however.

I just got chrono trigger, I often pick up Atlus games for the very reason you stated... will look out for Luminous Arc.

I've wondered about Rune Factory - what is it?

Rune Factory is all the fun stuff of Harvest Moon, but with RPG elements such as fighting and weapons

FF IV on DS is the new visual style, personally I liked the 3D version over a re-release of the classic. Make sure you read the reviews on Luminous Arc, it's hit or miss, for me it was mostly hit.

I had IV on DS before, I really really really dislike pseudo-3D on DS. imo it looks absolutely terrible.

I much prefer the updated sprites from the PSP version. Again, it is just a personal preference thing but I think the sprites on the PSP game are heaps nicer to look at than the faux 3D figures on the DS

VS

I dunno, the skinny blocky "3D" figures just don't do it for me, but I LOVE sprites, so I am definitely biased.

I love sprites too, but for the money I want something with something extra... otherwise I have emulation.

The DS has the same problem as the PS1/N64. The graphics are good enough to tempt developers to make their games all-3D, but not good enough that you actually want to look at them, especially years after release (I make exemptions for Super Mario 64 because the running and jumping controls are just so freakin' perfect, and the N64 Zeldas because I basically have never stopped playing them, so they have not become ugly to me).

Seriously, go show FFVII to anyone who didn't play it when it came out (and thus are not wearing a powerful set of nostalgia goggles), and watch them gouge their eyes out in horror. I imagine 3D DS games will be in the same boat in about 5 more years.

I think it's rather telling that the best DS games (other than Mario Kart DS, which just rocks) are 2D like Ace Attorney, Kirby Canvas Curse, Trauma Center, etc..

The PSP version comes with two additional games as well.

Quote:
Besides the core adventure Final Fantasy IV, you also get its episodic sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After Years (originally on WiiWare) and Final Fantasy IV –Interlude- that ties the above two together nicely.

Also - it isn't a straight port, they remastered the graphics - This is what it looks like on super nintendo

The PSP version is way more crisp.

Why is there no cutscene in that first video? That's dumb. I actually just finished playing FFIV on the DS recently, and liked the graphics (and the cutscenes!).

eh, it's a difference in tastes. I couldn't stand the blocky look of IV on DS - and thought the voices were really bad - but I'm just a fan of simple and elegant graphics... others like different things.

Also, just got a copy of the Dark Spire. Now, THIS is an awesome game. I am totally addicted already. Very simple dungeon crawler style - awesome music - beautiful look - quite grindy but I'm really digging it.

RPG fans who use DS should give it a try.

Anyone tried Etrian Odyssea?

I LOVE Etrian Oddesy I still need to get the sequel(s). It's fairly basic until you decide to reclass someone and realise how damn hard it is!

Never even heard of Dark Spire, I'll have to look it up. EO is awesome though, should be able to find the first in a bargain bin, no?

I've never seen it ever anywhere... so I'd prolly have to ebay it. It's low priority at the moment, however... got lots of new games to fiddle with.

Dark Spire is an Atlus game - first person view/ D+D style dungeon crawl. The music is awesome and the art design is really well done. Reviews I read of dark spire compared to E.O. which is why I asked about it here.
