So... I may have just spent 180 bucks on a 250 dollar pair of headphones, 140 bucks on a 500 dollar electric violin and am considering spending 600 on a shiny new Alto.

The Doritard would recognize the headphones methinks.

What boxing day gifts did the other denizens of /k/ get for themselves this year?

Didn't get it on Boxing Day, but used my Amazon gift card I got for Christmas to order copies of SMT: Devil Survivor, The World Ends With You, and Persona 2: Innocent Sin for myself.

Which I thought was pretty exciting.

A short wiki walk later, and it seems Mano got me into listening to a Finnish Folk Metal band for Boxing Day.

Violins really ought to be in more metal bands.

These things have a nifty sound to em. You should post a video of you playing something. Perhaps a violin version of a game song, or an anime opening theme.

Sure as soon as I learn to play it, never played a violin before. I figured it would be a pretty nifty instrument to learn though. The reason I went electric is; 1) Every little thing comes through, the little sound variations and such that would get lost before they reached the ear of a listener are all heard making them great practice instruments because you really have to do it well to get the proper sound, 2) No one has to listen to me practing till I figure I am good enough for them to listen.

Yah it only costs something like twice as much to live in BC and you make something like half as much on average.

Albeit it is a nice place just pricy. There is just no way I could move to BC to make less money, work less hours and have it cost more for things like housing, gas, hell even taxes are higher.

I'm mainly just talking about the women in Vancouver and roundabouts, but yeah. The awesomeness certainly comes with a price tag, which is why I don't currently live there.

Also, I have relatives in Prince George and Kamloops, which means anything significantly North of Vancouver is no-go anyway.

Isn't Vancouver like the second most expensive city in North America to live in after new york. Cheaper by only 4 percentage points.

I was stuck living in Calgary for 8 months when I got sick of hitchhiking a few years back. I try hard to forget every aspect of it. I had to PAY for my healthcare. WTF alberta get with the program.
BC was nice but it is way to expensive. I slept through saskatchawan. Manitoba is a colder version of onterrible. Quebec has hot hot hot chicks that love to **** english guys ^^. Never made it past la belle province. Southern Ontario is where I am.

Oh I just recently picked up Devil Survivor overclocked - Persona 2 is the one I don't have yet. If they have one left at my gamestop I'm going to use a coupon to get it for 50 per cent off (fingers crossed!)

Persona portable 3 is so awesome

Persona portable 3 is so far the most engaging rpg I've ever played on a portable system.

The whole shooting yourself in the head to do a special move (including healing spell) thing is a little weird though, have to say (haven't got any story explaining that though)

I like how the game makes you make choices about how you build your character and relationships - by forcing you through time (and with a fatigue system on dungeons) it sort of actively prevents/discourages more hardcore power-gaming

So I've really played through the story when I've played it - I enjoy making mundane choices like about whether to go to kendo practise - or to go on a date or to go visit the weird couple in the bookstore - and those choices subtly effect the main character (choice of persona, power of personas etc)

I don't think it's a spoiler to explain the head-shooting part, and it's mentioned in passing at one point so it's probably easy to miss. Personas show up when you're under stress to the point where you feel your life is in danger. Putting a gun to your head and pulling the trigger (even if it's just an Evoker--which are specifically designed to create that stress) is anxiety-inducing enough for most people to make your Persona manifest if they possess the potential. I'm pretty sure that the PSP version has the same scene of Yukari with a gun to her head in the opening anime cutscene as the console versions--that's what she's doing, and it's pretty difficult for her to pull the trigger even though she knows it won't hurt her.

This is also the reason why none of the characters use guns. In the heat of battle, if you had a pistol in one hand and an Evoker in the other, you could end up blowing your head off.

Sounds.. interesting. But really, I haven't looked at any information on the games.
I might check 'em out, though money is kinda tight for a while.

yeah I could get that in a certain sense - but thanks for mentioning the whole not equipping guns thing - in Persona portable 1 there are no evokers and characters all had access to a gun...

I almost wish I was in uni so I could write an essay turning that difference into a theory of some kind.

If you do get around to it, just do yourself a favor and start the series on Persona 3* or Persona 4.

*P3:FES or P3Portable are better than original release due to added content, but each one has different added content

I'm playing P2 now, and it's quite different than the later games (although Tatsuya doing an impression of a jet engine to curry a demon's favor is pretty funny to watch). I'll probably play the original Persona's PSP remake eventually, but for someone new to the series the first games are more niche and 3+4 are more accessible.

Oh yeah nothing to rush out and spend money on but if you see a used disc cheapish when you have a few dollars in your pocket - it is definitely worthwhile to snag it

I haven't tried 2 yet. I liked 1 but compared to 3 it is really barebones and simplistic.
