As a result, I lack motivation.

I looked those up on Wikipedia. Now I have to hire two assassins.

I don't suppose I could hire each of you to kill the other?

I'm dieting because I'm sick of being a fat *******.

And it makes me grumpy (and unmotivated).

When I say "fat *******", I'm exaggerating a bit. I started out at 250lbs, which is definitely overweight, but I'm 6'1" and broad-framed, so it's not as bad as it sounds. I was in good physical shape all through my childhood, high school, and college, from a combination of sports and swing/ballroom dance so anything less than toned muscle and lack of love handles is "too fat" for me. Unfortunately, working a desk job + MMO for entertainment for years doesn't do my physique any favors.

I'm down to 228.5lbs, so I'm making progress. Once I get down to 210 or so, I'll start bulking up my muscles (as opposed to aerobic exercise for cardio + weight loss), but I have little enough self-control that attempting to build muscle and lose fat at the same time would send me to the buffet table every day I worked out.

I'm down to 214 lbs, was at ~250 when I first moved into this apartment last year.
I've lost most of the weight in the past 3 months, just by cutting down on pop and eating out less often.

I need to start exercising if I want to lose any more though, so far it's just been a healthier diet.

I switched to Diet Mountain Dew Code Red (because it's the best-tasting 0 calorie drink I've found) when I absolutely must have something sweet. I've also eaten out much less.

Mainly, I eat one of those diet meal bars instead of breakfast and lunch, and then have normal food for dinner so I don't end up with scurvy or something.

I've been lacking that kind of motivation. I'm sitting at a jolly 280 right now. (At 6'8" its not that bad). There is a gym next to school that I have access to but I never seem to get there.
Also the pork was excellent and artificial sugar still makes your body convert any carbs hanging around into fat. Plus aspertame = death etc etc

I will take from the lack of a Daimakaicho response that everything I'm doing is the best thing ever, and I will live to be 150.

Yay!

A caveat first: I'm not a dietician nor have I had extensive training on dietary habits; my knowledge is pretty basic and definitely focuses more on the medical aspect than the physical (I'm not sure if that distinction makes sense or not). So I'll tell you what I think, but my advice does not outweigh that of someone with special training in the field. Smiley: bah

So an occasional soda is fine, but Peimei was pretty spot on about the artificial sugars. They're not great for you even if the soda has 0 calories. So don't use that as an excuse to drink lots of them, but one every so often is no big deal. As for the meal bars, I'd say those are fine for breakfast, but I find it unlikely that you're getting an appropriate daily nutritional requirement by losing two meals to those. (This is without knowing what all is in those bars; I could be wrong I suppose.) See if you can pick one meal to use those for (breakfast or lunch) while focusing on eating a real, but healthy of course, meal for the other one at least most of the time. It really does take a combination of proper eating and exercise in order to get to ideal physical condition. You have made good progress though, and have a solid approach to the weight loss vs muscle building aspect. There's a lot of science involved in proper body building that I know very little about and wish I knew more.

Hmm...if it will help me lose weight more easily I suppose I can cut down on the Dew. I was never much of a pop drinker until I moved to Utah, where the water is disgusting, so maybe I should just buy a water filter.

There's a lot of research out there suggesting that weight lifting is better for burning fat than aerobic exercise.

If it is the sweetness of the soda you are after, you could try Sparkling Water.

Drinking lots of water is definitely the best way to go. A filter is an excellent idea, I've heard from many people about Utah water.

Well, another side to the argument is that it costs me nothing to put on some running shoes and jog around the block, while I need to either join a gym or buy weights to do lifting.

Pushups are free, and are considered some of the best strength training exercises in existence. There are a number of other cheap or free strength training exercises you could consider.

Interesting. I totally spaced on doing those types of exercise; I was in a mindset of "running or weight machines", but I'll definitely have to give that a try.
