I view the downloading as trying the product out before I buy it (that, and actually getting to watch it on time if it's a new anime). If I really like it, I will go out and buy it just to support the industry (if I have the money).
I know that if I allow myself to download something, odds are good I'll never buy it. It's a matter of knowing my own limitations.
Ehh... What about the fact that if you download stuff, you'll be exposed to some series that you might never see otherwise. And then you'll buy KAWAII figurines of the character and end up supporting a show you would have never ended up supporting if you hadn't downloaded it.
I use Netflix and Crunchyroll to watch things I'm not sure I'm ready to pay for. I'm more likely to buy things in that situation because I don't have the download available always and forever afterward.

While you have a partial point, the localization company does pay the original folks for the license to localize it, and the more money they make, the more likely they'll be to buy more licenses for other shows.

I torrent my shows 100% legally according to the Supreme Court.
Maybe in Canada, but here I'm pretty sure it's considered just the same as downloading MP3s(which, to be fair, I'm guilty of doing when I can't find any way to get ahold of a song I want that doesn't involve paying exorbitant fees to import, I have my limits).
