3 months ago, my blood pressure was too high to donate.

Last week, HBP is just fine, since they really need donations. I really don't get it.

How does this not makes sense to you?

I've donated to the red cross many times, and I can tell you from experience that they are incredibly strict about their requirements and they do not let people "slip by" just because they need more donations. I see there being two possibilities here. The first is that your BP was the same and that particular worker input the wrong numbers into the computer (presumably on purpose). If this is the case and anyone found out, they would be fired without hesitation. The other possibility is that 3 months ago, your BP just happened to be high that day (or just happened to be low last week, depending on what is normal for you), enough to push you across the borderline they set. It infuriates me that the red cross is so selective, but they are very adamant about their regulations.

Standards are meant to be standards for a reason. Why not harvest free, healthy blood when you can, since you don't know what might happen in a week or two?

Daimakaicho seems to know more about their policies than I do, but changing or relaxing standards makes sense as need increases in almost any circumstance.

It's a general truth that when you can afford to discriminate you do, and when you can't you don't.

The numbers were almost the same. The guy doing the pre-screen actually felt the need to highlight the the BP number and the pulse¹ on the print out. I was dealt with by 3 different people who all saw the BP info (highlighted). Also, deferral is determined by computer, anyways, so I'm guessing 'national' just raised some limits.

I'm not complaining, I'm glad I was able to give, really.

¹My Pulse at my Dr.'s office usually clocks in at 60-70, but at red cross it's 90-105. I don't know why.

Blood vessels are exactly like inner tubes. If your blood pressure is too high you need to donate some blood to relieve the pressure, right?

MY LOGIC IS IRREFUTABLE

Exactly. I'm pretty sure that the BP and Pulse limits are to protect me, and not the blood pool. So I don't mind it. I'd be a little concerned if I saw Magic Johnson giving blood on the table next to me.

That would be correct. It's the same deal for the weight and age limits, as well as the time between donations. They want to make absolutely sure that no harm will come to you as a result of donating. To be honest, I was never aware that high blood pressure (unless it's REALLY high) was an issue for them (and yes, removing blood volume would bring your BP down), but high blood pressure can be an indicator of other problems that may or may not be concerning for them, so perhaps that was it. Or they were highlighting it for your sake? Either way, it sounds to me like the issue was with the time three months ago, not last week. Maybe they saw something else that was an issue, or that particular worker didn't think it was appropriate for you to donate; I couldn't really say. But at least you were able to give this time.

If you have an inner tube in your car I suggest you take it to the nearest police station and inform them of it.

I am unsure how the states handles their transport regulations, but having an inner tube in a vehicle designed for highway operation is dangerous and (in Canada) quite illegal. They aren't even supposed to let you drive to the tire shop to get the tire replaced, it's an automatic impound, then you need to put the spare on, if you have one; other wise have it towed, if the axle is the one to be lifted, else flat decked to a tire shop and have the tire replaced.

A) If I had something illegal in my car, why on earth would I take it to the police? They're just going to use it as an excuse to fine me for several thousand dollars, and make sure I have to go to court, and then I'd just have to pay to get it fixed anyway. Maybe things are different in Canada now (it has been a long time since I have lived there, and never as an adult), but in lolUtah the cops are 99% useless for just about anything, and the Highway Patrol in particular is known for its brutality if you don't lick their boots. The town I lived in a few years back actually made national news when the police tackled an 80-year-old woman and cuffed her in her driveway for not watering her lawn. Apparently it was against a city Ordinance or something.

If I wasn't stuck unable to find a new job, I'd be long gone from Utah, that's for sure.

B) Iunno anything about cars, I leave all the maintenance details to my little brother who does.

C) Man I'm sleepy.

A) ...

That was the point of the first post. The second was the explanation of why it wouldn't be a good idea.

Gotcha--I guess I really should go to bed if things are flying over my head. Ugh, I usually don't get sleepy this early.

Night.
