Due to the continuous earthquakes occurring in the eastern regions of Japan since Mar. 11, 2011, the power companies in Japan have encouraged everyone to cooperate by conserving as much energy as possible as it is feared there will not be enough power supply. Based on the current situation, we have decided to shut down the game servers temporarily, and therefore to suspend services of FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline temporarily.

The services will be temporarily suspended for at least a week starting on Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT).

Moar liek, time to marathon anime, amirite?

I dunno what it is about the Japanese earthquake in particular (as compared to natural disasters in recent years), but I was hit hard by it.
This video in particular, although nothing really serious happens in it, kinda reminds me of my mom for some reason. Makes it more real I guess.

I got to talking about it with an aunt last night over a few beer. I dunno. I thought I had something semi-intelligent to say here, but really, I'm still worried about the people affected by the earthquakes and subsequent tsunami.

I certainly understand what you're saying, as I've felt about the same. I'm not sure about for you, but for me, I think it's because Japan seems more real to me, since I think about the country often in the context of anime and such, whereas places in Africa(with all the genocides), the Middle East and other Asian countries only come up in random news headlines when **** happens, so it's easy to kinda ignore them.

Even New Orleans a few years back...that time in middle school where I was reading the Anne Rice books aside, it's somewhere I almost never think about, so the whole hurricane thing didn't seem as real.
