I've been meaning to finish watching past the first disc for about ten years now, so I decided it showing up on netflix would be a good excuse to get on that. Only got through the first episode last night and spent the whole time kicking myself for not resuming the series sooner.

The JP voice acting's pretty weaksauce, I blame whoever was in charge of casting. English dub's decent enough. Can't wait to get home and watch more. Yay!

I agree, I watched it the first time dubbed and the JP voice acting is much more annoying. It really is an amazing series though, I rewatched the first few episodes about a month ago.

This sounds familiar but I don't remember exactly who it was. Mind refreshing me?

Also, it's a matter of recognized international anime law that Johnny Yong Bosch has to be in any English dub of anything, always, forever. So it's got that going for it.

Come now, that's exaggerating. He isn't in everything.

It just seems like it sometimes, which is okay because he's a pretty good VA.

I don't know his other work but in Trigun some of the lines he delivers just leave me immobilized in fits of laughter.

Second episode!

This is a lot funnier now that I'm older and can get all the innuendo.

You know, I get the feeling I'm gonna be doing that when I finally get around to watching Ghost in the Shell, Fullmetal Alchemist and Deathnote.

The English dub isn't as bad as I've heard from other shows, but I still prefer the Japanese audio.

FMA's English dub is pretty darn good; I'd put it on par with the original Japanese (I watched most of FMA in English, switching to the JP version when I caught up to the then-current episode but had to see the end; watched FMA Brotherhood from the start in JP as the episodes came out in Japan).

I didn't watch Death Note in Japanese, but the potato chip line alone makes the English dub completely worth it. Both series are a definite must-try (YMMV but at least give it a shot) for any Anime fan, I'd think.

I've heard good things about Ghost in the Shell, but only ever saw 2-3 random out-of-order episodes someone else was watching when I walked in the room, so I never really got what the overarching plot was. I should probably put it on the list, though, since it looked interesting enough.

You will be. Except for Ghost in the Shell, it's highly overrated. It consists of annoying angsty characters sitting around being angsty about what it means to be human, with a little T&A and some gunfights tossed in to keep things from getting too boring. It doesn't help that everything is so horrifically over explained that a mildly retarded monkey could grasp the major plot points by halfway through any given episode.

So which should I watch? Years ago I caught a few episodes on Adult Swim but wasn't really into anime at the time. I tend to avoid dubs in general nowadays just because they tend to be...bad. Any shows I should watch dubbed instead of subbed? I'm watching Beck again at the moment and I find the use of English hilarious in general. I think Beck will be my next Manga. Does the anime hew closely to the manga? Can I jump right into the manga starting where the show ended without missing much?

I'd go for the dub. I find the orginal voice acting acoustically offensive for this one.

Finished off disc 1 last night. Now I get to play the waiting game with Netflix and the U.S. Postal Service. Really wish I had a fresh disc for this week since Japan is down for maintenance.

Holy kittenmuffins! They're streaming Trigun on Netflix now. Looks like I won't have to wait on that third disc after all.

Once you finish Trigun, try Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo if you haven't already. For some reason my brain categorizes those two as being similar enough to Trigun to recommend, though for the life of me I can't figure out why, other than the Western In Space angle (is this a spoiler for Trigun? I can't remember). But Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are such different takes on that idea that I can't really justify it through that, even. Regardless, both are awesome.

Also take a look at Hajime no Ippo, if only because one of the Opening songs was done by the same dude who did the Trigun Opening.

I didn't think a series about boxing could be so entertaining to me (who's not much of a sports kind of guy).

I knocked out Bebop about a year ago. I'd been meaning to watch that one since forever ago as well and it was really worth the wait.

You're right though, there is something very similar about them despite how they're both totally different approaches to a similar...genre? No, that's not the right word. Space westerns? I dunno, I can't put any of it into words in a way that's properly coherent. I guess I'd say they both have really high production quality on just about every level from the animation to the music to just good cinematography. Something about them is just really compelling. Maybe it's that they have a good story to tell and aren't getting bogged down in the now overly well established tropes of the anime industry.

I've heard good things about Outlaw Star, maybe I'll put that up on the chopping block next.

I finished Trigun last night. I've got mixed feelings about the final stretch of the show, but it's still one of the best ones out there.

Final episode though, that was the most intense game of Russian Roulette I have ever seen.
