Last Wednesday was the worst day I've ever had, aside from family members dying.
It was my second day of my new job. I couldn't get the car to start. I call in, and let them know I'm going to be late. Great start. 45 minutes for AAA to come jump my car. About 10 minutes from work (~35 minute drive total), I get pulled over. I wasn't doing anything wrong, I was just the last car to go by as the cop pulled off of a side street, and he must have run my plates for the hell of it.
My registration was expired.
In 2008.
Apparently, when I had gone away for a week on vacation, I let my brother use my car. He got pulled over for speeding, and they noticed that my inspection was expired. This is not a big deal, they just give you a date to have it inspected by and a paper to send in to the DMV. He never told me. I later got my inspection up to date, but without the notice sent in to the DMV, the hold remained on my registration.
What that means is that they just never sent me the renewal papers for my registration. Registration is not something I really think to check up on. They send me the papers, I mail a check, and I get the new registration. If they don't send me the papers, I don't think about it.
Anyway, my registration was expired. So they took my car to impound.
I called work, and told them I couldn't make it in. On my second day.
The cop told me there was a bus stop about a mile down the road. I scrounged up $1.75 in change from my car (I am ******* broke; I need to get paid), to take the bus to Providence. I didn't have enough for a transfer back to my area, so I had to walk the 12 miles home. It was ~95 degrees Fahrenheit out, and I had heavy jeans and workboots on.
It ended up costing me $450 between the tow charge and storage fees.
So I've been taking the bus to work over the past week. It turns my 35-minute car ride into a 1.5-hour bus trip.
I do get my car back tomorrow, which is nice.
