That thread.

Because (no offense to Usagi) Zam.com is not very good at moderating the forums in general. They're good at banning spambots and keeping the site clean. When it comes to the actual userbase, they are horribly uderwhelming.

Maybe TPO deserved the mute. There are dozens of other regular posters in =10 who deserve them as well. Look at the **** Fynlar, Lobivopos, and jtftaru among others spout in the forums. If TPO deserves a mute, they certainly deserve mutes for the derails they participate in. Honestly, degradation of the forums is as much the fault of the people who persistently respond to someone like Rog as it is his fault.

People in general need to get a thicker skin anyhow. Had the poster taken five minutes to browse the forum he was about to post in, he would have seen that he could expect someone to attack the poor grammar, the use of "toon," etc.

Really, if they end up banning him, I'll probably get myself banned (by openly questioning the administration, not by other means) or quit the site.

LOL I got Kao-warned. Smiley: frown

I hope he doesn't mind if I keep responding in that thread. I let the point about Rog go, mostly.

In all fairness, Kaolian has to walk a fine line. I usually leave moderation to him, mostly because that's pretty much what he's here for and he's had to make these judgments way more often than I have. But also because it's pretty much impossible to do anything that's going to make everyone happy. Mute someone, half the people cheer, half of them will *****. Do nothing, tons of people *****.
And yeah, there are issues with inconsistency, at least from my perspective. It's all about who's being ******* about the most to be honest.

I probably wouldn't have muted Rog myself. Mostly because you open up this door where it's like, "well, you muted HIM for being a ****, but you let this other guy get away with it..." I personally don't have a problem with a little bit of hazing. It's happened to ALL OF US. I know it happened to me anyway, and I acted like a little girl about it too. Then I figured out that's just sorta how online communities are. That and people who use the word "toon" do really get on my @#%^ing nerves.

However, I'm also not going to speak against the decisions of my fellow admins. From ZAM's perspective, the game is old enough that getting new posters for that forum doesn't happen often, and if every new poster that comes in gets hazed, most of them aren't going to stick around. It's a business after all. But then you bring up the point of "well, you drive off a premium poster to keep a new poster that's probably not even going to stick around." Again, this is why I like to leave these decisions up to Kaolian.

And yes, I've been Kaowned too. Smiley: smile
You're not doing it right if you haven't been swatted a time or two for stepping out of line. How else are you going to know where that line is?

Kao is usually a pretty fair guy. The only times I have an issue with him is when he gets personally involved in a matter to the point where he gets mad. He can sometimes let his anger get the best of him from a moderation standpoint, but he's human so you really can't fault him for that.

Anyway, as I posted in that thread, Rog isn't the worst offender. He's just the most visible because he posts in a lot of threads.

I also made a point about forum traffic that I won't really rehash here, suffice it to say that I believe this sort of hazing to be the least influential factor in the reduction of forum traffic.

I'm glad Kao left that thread open for some sort of discussion, but a little bit miffed that it was my posting that got warned, but the celebratory +1ing over Rog's muting didn't appear to rate (at least not publicly).

I'd like to keep both my posting privileges and my Guru, so I won't be posting about it much anymore. Smiley: lol

I was very tempted to report a few of the anti rog posts in that thread to see if anything would happen, but I didn't want to be 'that guy'.

A warning mute is fine, but one week is a little too much.

Pikko muted him initially, but referred it to Kao, who set the duration at one week.

Yeah, a little excessive in my opinion. But I shouldn't say anything since I whine about the tone on the FFXIV board.

Maybe I'll play FFXIV, I dunno yet.

FFXIV looks pretty graphically from what they've shown us. I guess the battle system sucked in alpha, but they are totally revamping it for beta. A lot of people are failing the benchmark program, so I guess you need a fancy pants computer or a PS3.

The mute happened at 4:53 am June 17, my time. Should be back in 3 days.

=10 and now w/e ff14's is are harsh. =10 always has. And when I say =10 i mean ALL over FFXI's forums.

I kind of lol'ed at the mute, kind of harsh. But a mute is better then a ban XD

(14 does look cool, I will probably check it out as I have a ps3. But damn I REALLY need a job)

Yeah, I totally agree on the FFXI forums being harsh as ****.

I wonder if the WoW or other gaming forums are as bad.

I've heard that the WoW forum is not like that at all.

Too many people in =10 get such of surge of empowerment when they get to red arrow someone into oblivion for having a contrary opinion.
