I searched and couldnt find anything close to answering this so forgive me if it been asked before and i missed it.

How does the +skill enchant to gloves work?

+5 Mining for example; I realized if you come to a node that is 275 to mine and you only have 270 skill the gloves would allow you to mine it. But I was wondering does the the +skill effect quality of results? If you are capped at 375 and use the gloves will the corrected skill of 380 help improve drops of rarer items like gems and motes?

Same with Skinning. At 375 plus +5 from glove, will it reduce number of knothide scraps and improve number of leathers obtained?

Has there been any testing done with posted results? (tested with adequate number of trials, not "seamed to improve from eye balling")

Thanks,
Robby

+skill will only let you mine a higher level node. It has no effect on the final product. Same with skinning, herbalism, and fishing. On fishing it is actually useful, as the limit of "you fish got away" is usually higher than your fishing skill can get on its own (depending on location).

So, it only
1. Helps you get a node outside your skill range by a couple of points
2. Gives you less of a chance to fail at mining/skinning/herbing, in which case you'd just have to try again (no big loss there).

To add a little to this, each node when it spawns has its drops calculated. There is nothing you can do in game to change what or how much will drop. This is the same with skinning, each mob when it is spawned will have written in what you would get by skinning it. Your skill in those areas has nothing to do with what you get, only if you can get it.

The only enchant that gives +skill i bother with is +fishing as that is a must have in outland , i cannot remember the exact skill levels needed in the top areas but i think it is about 425-475 ? i know i have the big iron pole and the gloves and the best lures and still get "your fish has got away " , i cannot think of any others that are needed like that.

In Nagrand, the skill level required to have any chance of fishing successfully is 380, according to Cartographer. Since 375 is the maximum through skill alone, bonuses are required. I tried doing the fishing daily quest today, which is in Nagrand on my server, with an bonus-affected skill of 444 and I'm losing about half of the fishes - they got away, apparently.

Thanks for the replies.

That is what I figured, but thought I better ask to be positive. I agree, the +fishing is the only thing that has practical use due to the fish "getting away". I guess I was more hoping for +skill to help you get past an invisible tier level to increase quality of drops; this probably comes from the years of FFXI crafting and it's HQ tiers I'm used to.

Sorry, off the main topic, but...

Go do the weekly fishing contest in STV. You don't necessarily need to worry about winning it, but spend the time to try to get the three special fish for the +5 fishing line (also can get +3 line from the fishing daily), the +5 Hat, and the +5 Boots.

If you're into fishing, it's well worth the time to try for those three items.

You need to have the base zone skill plus 95 to stop "fish got away". This page on El's Extreme Anglin' site lists the zones and skills needed. For instance, the aerial-only access areas fished for Spicy Crawdad require a minimum of 405, with 500 needed to keep from losing fish. So, if you ever plan on fishing up there, the STV contest items are even more important.

Also, on topic...in the old days, there were certain things (raid boss) that could only be skinned, for example, with the +skinning enchant. The required skill level was higher than max and required the enchant.
