No real point to this post, other than touting the benefits of fishing yet again.

Background - I have three level 70s, all Alliance on the same server. Along with a level 36 DE alt, they are highly co-dependent. I have a Herb/Alch, Miner/JC, Herb/LW, and the Enchanter. All three 70s have their epic flyers.

Well, for a change of pace, I decided to start a Horde druid on my wife's server. But, I am not using my wife's toons for anything. I'm guildless and I'm trying to basically start from scratch. The one exception is the level 27 mage I have on the same server that I started a while ago and left idle. The mage is an echanter/miner, but really I'm only utilizing it to DE stuff. It's a real change of pace to not have the option of mailing myself money or buying gear off the AH.

Anyway, I get the druid to the Barrens and while questing there, I see a few pools of Deviate Fish in one of the oases. I figure I might as well get a few points on fishing (I'm a profession guy, I can't help myself, I always level primary and secondary professions [even fishing] on my alts). I pull in 8 fish and then continue on questing.

I wasn't really figuring on them being worth much, but thought it couldn't hurt to look. So the next time I'm in Thunder Bluff, I check the AH and to my surprise the Deviate Fish are listed for nearly 1 gold apiece. This was just a total shock. On my Alliance server, Deviates are usually 1-2 gold per stack. Needless to say, I listed several. Overnight, I went from less than 1 g to over 8g. Woot! Chump change I know, but when you don't have a sugar daddy and you can't do IQD dailies, that's significant money. I don't know if the market will be sustained or not, but I'll definitely keep trying to sell the Deviates. The deposit is so low that it doesn't hurt much if they don't sell.

Moral of the story: Fishing FTW!

Mainly just posting to provide some fodder on a slow day, post your fishing tales if you want.

I love fishing, too. One of the things that I do is catch golden darters and keep a bunch of fish sticks on hand for healers when I'm in PUGs. I also keep feltail delights for casters, and hot spicy talbuk for tanks, and, when I have em, the grilled mudfish (I think that's what it is, don't have that on hand right now) that the rogues/hunters like. It's nice to have a mage table, but even nicer for each person to have a few pieces of buff food for the instance. I just started doing this, so I may be neglecting some classes/specs, but it's just a fun way to spread the skill love. :) Of course, I like to keep the guild bank stocked as well.

I sorta have the urge to take up fishing on my druid. My first main character (level 60 Paladin) had 300/300 fishing... back in the days before fishing was understood, I actually used his experience to write the fishing section of the Tradeskill FAQ here :-P But it took a looong time.

However, there is a huge profit to be made with fishing these days, especially with pure water, but also just with rare fish and cooking (which I also had at 300). Come the next expansion, there are a ton of achievements based solely on fishing... and I'm all about the achievements. So I hope to get my fishing up again on a new character. I think it'll be easier since they decreased the time your bobber can sit in the water...

Fishing ftw indeed!

...and they changed it so you don't have complete misses. You can still get a "Your Fish Got Away" message if your skill isn't high enough, but no longer do you get the bobber timer running out and nothing at all. That 20-second timer was a blessing, to be sure.

I'd hate to think how much time I've spent on all my toons combined just watching bobbers. My main was maxed fishing before BC release and then 375 before the fishing changes. One of my 70 alts is 375 fishing and the other is pushing 300 with 375 in mind. Any alt I've ever made always gets fishing, too. I used to spend mornings before work on my first bank alt fishing the pools along Darkshore for Oily Blackmouth to sell on the AH. Good times.

Over time, I've transitioned to primarily fishing to meet my own needs (pet food, buff foods) and help out guildies rather than trying to make money. You're right, it's generally easy enough, but as my need for money has lessened and with the advent of dailies, my fishing for profit's sake has mostly stopped. Of course, selling a monocle here and there is never a bad idea. ;-)

I'm looking forward to the fishing achievements and the new fish they'll add. Also, I'm hoping there will be more fishing quests and more variety.

Now if I could just get that darned recipe for Savory Deviate Delight. I'm still kicking myself for not buying it when I thought it was overpriced at 30g, it's now several hundred if it's even on the AH and I can never get the thing to drop when I try to farm the Barrens.

I paid 99g for the recipe, which, at that time, on my server, was a good deal. Nowdays it's going for cheaper. But I still go down to wc and fish for them sometimes, and have definitely made my money back. Plus ninja vs pirate duels = fun. :)
