was just curious if anyone in the beta testing has had a chance to try out the new inscription profession and could give us an idea of what it does and what mats to start saving up?

Heard the herbalism claim too - apparently low level herbs to boot, so start raiding the newby zones and stealing all of thier flowers from them. ;)

On the beta server, I've chosen Inscription as the main profession for my Death Knight. Here's what I found out:

  1. The only place to get training is Northrend, either at Valience Keep (Borean Tundra), or at the Howling Fyord (sorry, I don't remember the name of the town). This is for Alliance, and I'm sure that it's the same for Horde, whatever the names of the landing towns are.
  2. Incription requires Scriber's tools, much like skinning needs a knife, or jewelcrafting uses a jeweler's kit. This was a real hang-up for my character, since I couldn't find any place in the starting town that sold them. My main character finally found it for sale at Amber Point, a town deep in the Borean Tundra, purchased it, and mailed it to my DK. I hope that the inscription tools will be MUCH easier to acquire by the time WotLK is released, and have put in a suggestion to Blizz to make a change.
  3. Yes, flowers are used (at least in the initial recipes) to make inks for inscribing. The inks stack in groups of 20, the same as herbs. I'm currently 50/150 inscription, on just creating inks. The scrolls I can create at this point are Scrolls of Stamina, Agility, and Intellect, and something that produces a random Tarot Card (collect a deck for a reward).

That's about it for now. More later.

would love to hear more about your inscription experiences over the next few months, I definitely plan on getting it on one of my guys, probably much like you on my lovely DK. So what herbs are used to make the inks or is that still secret info?

the one thing I'm really excited about is that inscribers will finally be able to give us enchanters the option to really make some money by being able to sell enchants on the good ol' AH.....hello huge flood of gold from DEing trash greens as well as selling those sweet twink PVP enchants

So far, only Peacebloom and Silverleaf, to make black and silver inks.

I have no idea about this whatsoever. So far it hasn't come up as an option for me.

inscribers can make scrolls of attribute? interesting. I find the AH is already flooded with such scrolls and or they dont sell or get used. I wonder if the scrolls of attribute will disappear as random drops?

at least on my server, any time I get a scroll that none of my toons can use I always dump it on the AH and have always had it sell.

I made a guide, not completed yet, but these are the approximate mats that you will need. I'm glad I bought a lot of the herbs 1-2 month ago. Since Blizzard announced that Inscription will be introduced with the 3.0 patch, herb prices skyrocketed on my realm.

You mill 5 herbs for 2 - 3 pigments.

[Alabaster Pigment] - Bloodthistle / Peacebloom / Silverleaf / Earthroot / Mageroyal
[Dusky Pigment] - Briarthorn / Swiftthistle / Bruiseweed / Stranglekelp
[Golden Pigment] - Wild Steelbloom / Grave Moss / Kingsblood / Liferoot
[Emerald Pigment] - Fadeleaf / Goldthorn / Khadgar's Whiskers / Wintersbite
[Violet Pigment] - Firebloom / Purple Lotus / Arthas' Tears / Sungrass / Blindweed / Ghost Mushroom / Gromsblood
[Silvery Pigment] - Golden Sansam / Dreamfoil / Mountain Silversage / Plaguebloom / Icecap
[Nether Pigment] - All Outland herbs.
[Azure Pigment] - All Northrend Herbs.

Approximate Materials Required for 1-450:

50 Alabaster-giving herbs
50 Dusky-giving herbs
100 Golden-giving herbs
80 Emerald-giving herbs
80 Violet-giving herbs
340 Silvery-giving herbs
230 Nether-giving
400 Azure-giving

We have several wiki pages, like this and this, detailing a lot of the glyph and inscription stuff. We also have a recipes page.
