Engineering questionFollow

OK I have a level 56 mage with no profession, I thought maybe i should get one. Now I was wondering if engineering was worth it, I can already nuke so the bombs aren't going to outdamge my spells, aren't they? Basically I was going to choose it because I can make my own flying mount and for the mote extractor, which will help my warlock get the primals he need for the frozen shadoweave set.

So the question, should I or should I not?

You can get primals faster by leveling Herb or Mining and selling what you gather. In the time it takes to level Engineering (to even begin farming for motes), you would already have all the primals you need.

You should definitely have two professions, whether or not you choose Engineering as one of them.

There's lots of reasons to love Engineering, varying from class to class. Paladin and Warrior tanks love bombs. PVP runners and healers love grenades. You won't use explosives much as a mage, but that's not an issue.

As a mage, you'll love your goggles. You'll love rocket boots + slowfall in the battlegrounds. You will love your target dummies while levelling. You will love the +51 stamina trinkets you can start wearing at your current level.

Zapthrottle. Rofflecopter. World Enlarger. Shrink Ray. And so on.

Bombs aren't used for their damage, they're used for the stun. I've seen videos of frost mages in world pvp that are able to use bomb stun to great effectiveness.

Agreed. Any class can benefit from the stun bombs. And even "The bigger one", one that would take the cover of others to help get off, can be effective with 2-3 people around. Incapping all of them for 5 seconds is a huge advantage.

And think about it. In pvp as a mage your gonna be running away while ur target is slowed so you can throw off another frostbolt. Why not be throwing a grenade while you move for at the least its extra damage and makes you getting away easier.

Goblin rocket launcher is really fun too=)

I'm not aware of any engineers who prefer to use bombs to stun. Grenades, which have no cast time and can be targeted while moving, are much better for stunning, especially in PVP. Bombs have a larger radius but a cast time, which makes them less useful for stopping runners, slowing pursuit, interrupting casters and other situations. Bombs are great for pulling though.

AoE grinding mages may be an exception, though I'd never use a bomb when grinding with my own frost mage. No reason to throw gold at the mobs when Blizzard, Frost Nova, Cone of Cold etc. are free and sufficient.

Thanks for the imput. I still haven't chosen but engineering and mining seem seem to be taking the lead to my second idea which was herb and alchemy. I prefer, personnally, to have a bit more utility in pvp (that going to be my focus at 70). One can say that alchemy can bring good utility too, but I can just buy whichever pot/elixir/flask of the AH or a guildy (money isn't a probem I have plenty of gold on my 70 warlock (tailoring/ench)). But for engineering, I dont think you can buy bombs or grenades off the AH.

Anyway thanks a lot people

You can get a steady supply of high-level bombs and grenades from vendors, but only engineers can use them.
