Whacky realm economyFollow

I just rolled a new toon on a new server. All of my other toons are on a different server. On my 'main' server I have a chanter/banker alt, so I've learned the economy very thuroughly (at least for chanting mats and a few other related items). I have my prices for the various dusts, shards, and essences set and I'm happy with the results.

The new toon is also an enchanter (I never look a moneyhorse in the mouth). She's still farily new (lvl 18, 100 chanting), but already I'm seeing some whacked out economy issues.

On the new server, the lesser essences sell for nearly as much as their greater counterpart. Lesser magic essence sell for 25s while the Greaters sell for just 50s (3 Lessers make a Greater). So I'm making more money by splitting up my greaters. I'm just starting to get the astral essences, but it seems to be the same trend.

Now, as I'm typing this, I'm realizing that maybe this is the norm, and that my 'main' server is the one that's whacked out (the lesser essences sell for 15-10% of the greater).

Either way, when folks say 'it depends on your server,' it is most definately true!

P.S. couldn't resist yet another plug for dis-enchanting - lvl 18 warrior toon already has over 40g in her bags (and even more on auction) and has leveled herself up to 100. And she started from scratch.

I've noticed the same thing with the motes vs the primals - if a primal is going for 25g then common sense says that the motes should average for around 2.5g each (ten motes to a primal).

Yet this is never the case - the motes are either priced way higher or way lower then they should be priced vs thier respective primals. >_<

Another item I'm finding on the new realm - folks putting items up for bid significantly below the vendor price. I use bottom scanner and have the vendor filter set at 10% profit. Granted the deals are for bids only and most of those eventually get returned, but I've won and vendored plenty of silks, claws, bloods, bandages (even greys!) at a very decent profit.

That never happens on my main server.

One reason some motes tend to go for more is because some recipes only call for motes. These motes are also usually the ones that can't be "broken" with mining, so generally the motes can go for more then the primals because everyone combines the motes while farming into primals, leaving the mote market drier. As for the well under cost, don't know what to say about that.

Dangit ... I thought the mote to primal discrepancy was my own secret moneymaker.
Now you've gone and exposed it to the world.

I won't share my other little secret, but it has something to do with stocking up on a certain item that is only available at a certain time of year.

Can someone tell me what the profit is on an item you buy for 4c and sell for 2g 50s ?

Is it really 6,250% ??

It's actually not "Whacky"

In the real world it's called arbitrage and is a major way of making money. As one of the posters said, you can scan the AH for stuff that is selling below vendor rates. Your profit margins are going to be tiny, but if you do it 1,000 times, you'll make good money. That's how it works in the real world too.

If you notice an imbalance, often times it's not significant, but if you can take that deal over and over and over - you'll make money.

Google "Arbitrage" - it really exists...

It is the same on many servers , real weird prices , for example i just sold a stack of 10 crawler claws for 4g50s , they are useless as stat food so i am guessing someone is powering up cooking , now i would never pay that much for low level food anyway , but its good as i have a new character on a new server so i am making loads of gold , yet my original server you cannot give away low level food stuffs .

so far on 5 servers i have easily made gold after i find what sells well on that server , and all seem very different in whats best to farm
