OP - please let us know your level so we can tell you the best place. If you are level 30, then Badlands will be tough. Here are some rough estimates if you are running laps around areas, including what level you want to be. Of course, if you are higher level, then it will be much easier since you will aggro less mobs.

Arathi (lvl 30-35) - you will get approx 80% Iron, 20% other (Mithril/Tin/Gold)

Badlands (lvl 35-40) - you will get approx 50% Iron, 40% Mithril, 10% other (Truesilver/Gold)

Tanaris (lvl 40+) - you will get approx 60% Mithril, 30% Iron, 10% Other (Truesilver/Thorium)

If you are close to 40, and want to farm iron for a bit of cash (on my server, there was no steel at all today on the AH, i can get away with selling a stack for 25-30G. This of course includes steel made from all the cheap iron ore people have posted :P), getting your mount first is a good idea. After that, travelling from Hammerfall in the north-east, to the south east to the middle south of Arathi Highlands is a good iron route, and the mobs should be less of a nuisance at 40+ as well.

Badlands can be good. If you're a lower level, then Thousand Needles is really nice. Good grinding enemies around level 30, and guaranteed spawns in the caves (at least two per cave, unless they're rarer spawns or someone beat you to them). Also, run a circuit of the Shimmering Flats; there are usually a couple spawns there too. When you move up to Mithril, the silithid area there is the lowest place in the game to find it, outside the Charred Vale in STM.

For iron? 1K Needles usually drops about 40% Copper/30% Tin/20% Iron/10% Other. Not very efficient for gathering Iron.

HOWEVER - Tin sells really well on the AH. So, it's not all bad.

At the lower levels (i.e. 30ish), I would still recommend Arathi Highlands for Iron. Plus, you can do some questing for good xp while you're there.

Where are you getting these figures from? The spawn points for iron are static; it's easy if you know where to go.

Off the top of my head, I can think of... 8 static spots, with probably another two spawns in between them. Of iron alone. Yes, there is copper (a lot of it), and some tin, and sometimes you get screwed out of your iron because it spawns as gold, but it's still good.

Maybe Arathi is better, but 1k Needles is very good as well. And as for questing, 1k Needles is a Horde hotbed of quests. Even the Alliance have a few in the Shimmering Flats.

I got those figures from running around farming Tin. I was leveling BS on an alt, and needed Bronze :) I got more copper and tin than I did iron. Rough estimate from multiple loops were:

86 Copper
62 Tin
44 Iron
12 Silver
8 Gold

I have no idea where the static spawn points are, so I can't speak to that. However, the Iron did seem to mostly come from around the Shimmering Flats area. Then, when I went deeper into the "Needles" area, Tin & Copper took over in force. A few Iron nodes, but mostly Tin & Copper. So if you focus around Shimmering Flats, then you can probably do ok.

Personally, I think Arathi is better if you want to focus purely on Iron. I would guestimate about 70-80% of the nodes being Iron when you run around the entire zone. In one loop, I can usually get about 3 stacks.

But - to each there own. You can get ore from many places.

All over. Hellfire is pretty good for fel iron and I always got plenty of adamantite and fel iron in Nagrand, Blade's Edge, Zangermarsh and Terrokar. Khorium and Rich Adamantite seemed to me to be random spawns (much like gold, silver or truesilver back in Azeroth) and Eternium is a drop from other mineral veins.

Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley have their share of nodes also but from my point of view there seemed less. Or maybe I just don't care for those areas personally so I tend to see less ore simply due to me not being in those zones much. *shrug*
