Some background info first: lvl 70 DPS Warrior, Mining maxxed, BS 290ish.

I am seriously considering dropping BS for Engineering, pretty much just for the Plate DPS Goggles. I am considering this because I am in a raiding guild and have access to equal if not better weapons than the craftables. I also have full epic armor sets for PvP, PvE DPS, and almost a full epic tanking set. I just can't seem to justify leveling Blacksmithing, when that great Engineering helm seems so easily attainable. I also am an officer in a guild with a serious guild vault, and plenty of obscure mats there for the taking (for engineering).

I guess my question is, should I max out Blacksmithing and keep mining? or Drop BS and pick up Engineering and keep mining? or... Max BS, mine a ton of mats, drop mining and pick up engineering to have both maxxed?

Please share any experience you have with any of this, as any and all input would be appreciated. Thanks Guys.

Go ahead and trade blacksmithing for engineering. If you don't want to go with your instincts, go with your analysis. It sounds like you are reading your situation perfectly. You're in the perfect position to give up on blacksmithing right now and start a profession that will actually benefit your toon.

The only things keeping most bsmiths in the bizness IMHO are the sunk costs fallacy and the hope that someday WotLK will come....

QFT.

I hope the thousands of gold I have absolutely wasted on blacksmithing is worth the socketing for weapons in WotLK.

Fireguard, the **only** item of use after the thousands of gold, sits in the bank, having run it's course of usefullness in a matter of a few weeks, replaced by the Continuum Blade/Kings Defender (depending on what I'm hitting).

I stil maintain (and I've heard arguments to the contrary, and respect them), that Blacksmiths, having gone through the costs & pain they go through, should be able to craft useful items - whether they be DPS, heals, or tanks.

The number of useful items that a blacksmith can create, without huge (and yet additional) expense (via AH plans) is very limited, yet I see cloth wearing tailors hit 70, craft themselves a set of gear, grab some AH items, and walk into Kara without issue.
