I have just had a renewal of interest in the World of Warcraft. The same drive, and non-stop play I had when first starting the game. This all came from a few months break from the game, and a switch of faction (alliance to horde).

Previously, I never had thought about fishing within the game. Within the 'real' world, I just happen to be an avid angler. While leveling my new troll hunter, Id like to spend some time to level fishing.

I have browsed through threads concerning fishing gear, locations, etc. However, I was curious of what I may expect to get out of fishing ? Can fishing be profitable? How have your personal experiences been with fishing?

Thank you in advance for any contributions to this thread!

Fishing can be a lot of fun, or it can be really boring. It depends on what mood your in.

It can be profitable since you get a lot of good fish for food buffs. A lot of cooked fish will sell pretty well on the AH. Also, you can do the fishing daily, where you have a chance to get The 2 Ring, which also sells well on the AH.

Personally, I enjoy fishing because I don't do it very often. If I did it too much, then I'd probably hate it. I only do it when I need to make some raid food for myself. It's fun in short bursts, and also while waiting for boats in Azeroth.

A great time sink. Seriously, fishing is very time consuming, even after the leveling nerf from a recent patch.

Food buffs are awesome and you get some great ones from recipes that require fish.

Raid food can be extremely profitable, especially the golden darters and spicy crawfish is you leveled cooking as well as fishing. If you just sell the raw fishing mats, they will also sell very well, but slighty less than it's cooked version.

Motes of water can also be fished alot in Zangermarsh and Nagrand. Primal water sell for around 25g on my server.

And then there's the goldenscale venderfish. That is 6g for you.

Mr. Pinchy coming from my second wish has been my personnal highlight from fishing. Also, Toothy from the Stormwind/Ogrimmarr daily.

I do alot of raiding and some great guild activities, but if I want some "alone" time in this MMORPG, fishing can be quite a calming way to get that in.

Once fishing was leveled to 375, I find it very relaxing at the end of an evening to go off somewhere with an empty bag and fill it from fishing. Especially around Serpent Lake in Zang, where there are plentiful pools of Steam Pump Debris that can yield all sorts: engine parts (turn in quest at Telredor); scroll cases; fel iron ore; fel iron bolts; Netherweave.

Love doing a flyby of the Elemental Plateau in Nagrand as well, and seeing if there are pools of water in the water elemental area. If I am lucky, all six of them are spawned, and I can collect enough motes of water for 2 Primal Waters - which is 50g for about 10 minutes work.

Fishing does take a great deal of time to level, but that's because it's designed in a unique way to the rest of the professions. You can fish anywhere in the game and get skillups. Theoretically, you can go from 1-375 in Org. I don't recommend that, but it is possible.

If you break fishing down into blocks and level as you level your hunter, it won't be so bad. I'd recommend fishing in an area low enough for the mobs to leave you mostly leave you alone. Also, once you hit 70, there's a nice daily fishing quest that gives you an added incentive to fish, gives you a nice prize package and probably enough of a challenge to get 2-3 skillups. That's not bad.

The very best food buffs in the game come from fishing. True some are matched by a meat counterpart (grilled mudfish and warp burgers for example). But most of the top end buffs are from fishing only (the spicy crawdads, golden fishsticks mentioned above, blackened sporefish, poached bluefish, and fisherman's feast have no comparison).

So you can obviously make some good coin selling those, or make yourself VERY popular with guildies.

Granted this assumes you've leveled cooking, but that's extremely easy to do since since you have the materials on hand. But you don't need the high end products (or cooking) to make money, unlike most other professions. Almost from the beginning, you can fish stuff that folks will buy. Deviate scalefish in the Barrens are accessible from 75 (I think?). Oily blackmouths are popular with enchanters because they eventually turn into free action pots which sell very well. Most of the other pools of fish can be sold for decent profit as well.

Last, don't forget the STV fishing contest every Sunday afternoon. You can get some very nice fishing gear and skillups there as well.

So while I wouldn't exactly call fishing 'fun' per se (I'd rather be running Kara), it's an extremely valuable and profitable skill to have .

At the lower levels, fishing in the Barrens for Deviates is a good way to make some cash while leveling up your fishing, far more so on the Alliance side than Horde, but you'll make cash either way.

On a note about Furious Crawdad, which used to require a considerable amount of gear obtained from the STV fishing competition to catch successfully - it is now far easier to catch with the lucky fishing hat, or any of the gear obtained from the fishing daily.
Mudfish sells quite well (although I don't sell any myself), Bluefish can as well and you can't go wrong with Golden Darter. The new fish that live in the streams outside Kara are also a good niche market if you have a lot of Warlock buddies in Sunwell.

Mining, (dis)Enchanting and fishing allowed me to buy my epic mounts (all of them ground and air) as soon as I dinged the appropriate level to use the mounts. While I did some farming and played around in the AH also, (as well as being frugal with purchases) the aforementioned trio of skills were my big moneymakers.

Oily blackmouth, firefin snappers and stonescale eels are used in alchemy. On my server stonescale eels were the most valuable. Deviate fish are also extremely valuable as they are used in both the Savory Deviate Delight recipe as well as an alchemy recipe (elixir of giant growth, iirc).

In addition to the buff cooked fish mentioned by the above posters, there are also many other valuable fish. I made a small fortune selling Darkclaw lobsters and large raw Mightfish, as many folks aren't sure where to find those. (shhh, they can be fished in the bay of storms off the coast of Azshara....) Lighting eels were another good seller.

As suggested above, breaking fishing up into manageable chunks will work better. If you are brand new to fishing, here are a couple of suggestions:

Once you train fishing, drag the fishing icon from your spell book to your action bar. Then bind it to a key so casting and re-casting becomes as simple as possible. Mine is the Z key because I am right handed...which leaves my left hand free to grab my soda or glass of water after I cast. :)

Purchase a shiny bauble until you get your skill up to at least 20 or so. The lure will last 10 minutes, allowing you to get to around that level of skill. This will prevent irritating fish get aways.

Some of my early favorite fishing spots on my Horde characters are Brightwater lake in Tirisfal Glades, Stillwhisper Pond in Eversong Woods, along the coast near Sen'jin village, the lake near Bloodhoof village in Mulgore and of course you can fish in most of the major cities. The oasis areas in the Barrens are excellent once you skill up a bit as you can then begin fishing for deviate fish.

Check out the vendors that may be nearby the fishing trainers, many of them sell various recipes for cooking your fish for very easy leveling in cooking.

Boy, I do tend to ramble on, sorry. Good luck with your fishing endeavors.

Whitescale Salmon in Feralas. I have a 59 alt that I no longer play. I keep him in Feralas and send him up to Jademir lake area (watch out for the dragonkins). I can fish up about 2 stacks of them in less than a half an hour. I sell them in groups of five for 8 gold each (32 gold a stack). A lot of players are powerleveling cooking without fishing (275-300). It seems that the bear kabobs and bear burgers are going gray @ 295. And @ 70 nobody wants to do the sandworm quest in Silithis. There is so much gold going around (dailies) that it is easier to just buy raw fish in the AH. I made over 100 gold this past weekend from fish alone.CHA-CHING$$$$$$

fishing pretty much bought my lvl 40 mount and a good part of it paid for my 60 epic mount.
I only fished when I was going through a zone or I close the night out fishing.
Sometimes I went out of my way to fish certain pools. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered casting.

I will say the best tip ever given to me was when I first started playing and I was just making my way to menethil harbor when some guy said the best tip I can ever give you is to learn fishing.
I wish I remembered that persons toon now because I'd love to say thank you.

I will recommend whatever professions you learn to level them up as you level even if it means taking away from earning exp to level that profession.
It's very worthwhile imo to do it that way instead of getting to lvl 50 and starting to pay attention to a secondary profession let alone a primary.

Fishing rules. You can basically lvl it as you go along, waiting for boat rides (more so if you are alliance), feed your pet and cook food for no money. Wether you make gold or no at end game is a personal matter, I do XD

You are crazy not to cook if you are going to fish. Every single fish you can catch vendors for more if it's cooked. Not a lot of money, but every bit helps. Of course, you also get the free buff food.

Another good money maker from Fishing - Skullfish soup. You have to get the recipe from doing the cooking daily in Shatrath.

Skullfish soup gives a buff of +20 Spell crit. That is gold, cooking gold Jerry!

Spend a short time fishing outside of Karazhan, then nip back to SW, cook it up, slap it on the AH. Cha ching.

People who neither fish nor cook are fools, IMHO.

Hey fishing is fun while waiting for battle groups in Arathi or wating for the boat to arrive (especially if you just missed the boat) I try to level my alts so they can hit the floating wreckage spots on the coasts in wetlands and barrens. Never steam by one of those without a few casts. Good stuff can be found. The 16 pound catfish and other surprises are fun to dredge up when fishing and can be used for dueling. 16 pound catfish vs last month's mutton might be a great duel! Since I am horrible at dueling I usually use my fishing pole as a weapon and ask for a fair fight.

Cheers and see you hip deep in shark infested waters.
